Is Hudson available for trading (WhiteSox fan)

White Sox fan here from SouthSideSox. First off, love the greeting in the top left if the screen. We are very grateful for having "you know who" in our Outfield. :)

Anyways, I am here because I am inquiring about the availability of Orlando Hudson. We are "ok" at 2B right now with Alexei Ramirez, but after this season Orlando Cabrera and Uribe are likely to be gone, moving Ramirez to SS, and leaving 2B up to just Danny Richar (remember him?). Richar has not been that impressive, and just came off an injury.

I believe Hudson is in a contract year, and correct me if I am wrong, but I think he has expressed interest in not returning to Arizona. I am wondering if he is going to be looked at being traded come the deadline, and for what price is he worth. I am somewhat familar with the Diamondbacks since my best friend is a big fan, but you guys know a lot more than I. I know Reynolds plays 3rd, and Tracy is still lingering around, but as far as I know, they are both very poor with the glove. Any chance you guys might take a look at Crede for your corner? I completely understand the jam at 3rd, but Im not sure if the Dbacks are planning on moving Reynolds to the OF (Braun style), or giving him more time in AAA (Josh Fields style), or if Chad Tracy is out of a job or not. I was also thinking with Johnson going on age 84, maybe you guys would have interest in a young SP. Lance Broadway and Kyle McCulough come to mind. They are 2 of our highest touted minor league pitchers in our system.

And what is the situation at 2B for you guys anyway? I know Josh Brynes has a knack for having a good farm system, is there any stud 2B that you guys might be willing to throw into the 2B job if Hudson is expendable? Anyway, just looking for some feedback. Take into consideration I have not taken the time to go through your roster and look for weakspots or any replacements for O-Dawg. I would rather get opinions for the fans than look up numbers and such.

Joe

We do have a great 2B in the first system that I and on many scouts are high, but you won't find many on this blog that like him.

As far as trading Hudson, you guys would have to blow us away with an offer. Reynolds is the 3B of the future and we don’t need any young SP, though it is always good to have extra ones(Angels needed their young arms earlier in the season).

Brandon Webb, that's all I'm going to say.

What makes Bonifacio great?

He’s fast, yes, but you can’t steal first base.

In five minor league seasons he’s never hit above .285 in a real ballpark. In non-Lancaster settings, only once has he hit a .341 OBP or even slugged .352. At least Juan Pierre could hit over .300 in his prime. There’s absolutely nothing to indicate Bonifacio could do anything of the sort and when you don’t walk or hit for power, that makes you a replacement level ballplayer.

Bonifacio would have to be Ozzie Smith at second base to be anything close to average.

I agree.

I love Bonifacio, especially how he broke down and cried after hearing last year that he’d been made a September callup, but unfortunately, he’s just a super-fast slap hitter with no power who hasn’t proven he can hit major league pitching. He’d probably be a career pinch runner.

Srdmad, I would also be interested in reading major league scouts talking about Bonifacio. Do you have any links?

Most of those scouting reports dated

He just hasn’t shown he can hit enough, or get on base enough, since he left Lancaster.

He strikes out way too much for a guy with zero power. And he’s already 23, so it’s not like he will “grow into his body”

Speed is A LOT of fun to watch. I got a thrill watching him in spring training and during his call up last year. But being fun to watch, and actually being productive are two different things. He’ll be an interesting case to follow, because you are right, the scouts DO love him, and the stat heads don’t. We’ll find out who was right about him soon enough.

Thanks for posting the links.

You will notice that the most glowingest reports about Bonny are from early 2007 or older.

I won’t feel comfortable with him as our starting 2B until he PROVES that he can hit major league pitching.

Hell,

I’d settle for him proving that he can hit AAA pitching.

So far his .646 OPS ain’t cutting it. Hell, even the .685 OPS at he put up at Mobile last year wouldn’t cut it.

If we're going to use him as a leadoff hitter and middle infielder,

I can forgive the lack of power in exchange for a good OBP. He’s at .339 right now, and if he could bring that up to the .360 range (or so) in AAA, I’d probably be satisfied with seeing him have his shot.

Just wanted to say that before anyone else did. :-)

Beat me to it.

Yeah, we’d only accept The Player in return for O-Dawg.

First of all

Go Sox!

Even though Hudson is in his contract year, it’ll take a bit to pry him away, I’d think, pieces that the Sox either don’t have or wouldn’t want to give up. Maybe he’ll make it to free agency and Kenny Williams can get a beat on him. Then I can wear both a Quentin AND a Hudson White Sox jersey to Snakepitfests of the future.

The boys in Sedona Red slugged it out with a pretty pesky poltergeist, then stayed on to dance the night away with some of the lovely ladies who witnessed the disturbance.

Hudson AND The Player jerseys??

You don’t want to be invited to another Snakepitfest, DO you….?

It’s an interesting question. I think the D-Backs would give up Hudson for the right offer. The thing is we’re going to get a nice draft pick when we lose him in the off-season, and (hoping we don’t continue to tumble down this rabbit hole) we should be in contention until the end of the year… so Hudson is obviously very valuable. Our backup options are pretty weak: Bonafacio? Burke? Moving Reynolds over? But if I’m Josh Byrnes I’d listen to offers.

If the D Backs are anywhere near first place at the deadline

then they won’t trade Hudson, and will just take the draft pic, assuming there is no extension….which shouldn’t be assumed at this point. He could still be extended.

by shoewizard on May 29, 2008 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Sell now or buy later.

As shoe just pointed out, it depends on our situation at the deadline. Assuming we are still in the hunt, and haven’t run away with the division, we don’t really have enough depth at second-base to be able to take the hit – very well though Augie Ojeda performed for us going down the stretch last season. It’d take a mightily impressive offer to pry him away from us.

If we hang onto him, don’t extend Hudson and then let him go, stop me if I’m wrong, but I think he would be a Type A free-agent, which would net us two picks: a sandwich one between the 1st/2nd rounds, and the signing team’s first- or second-round pick depending on whereabout they draft [first round if it’s #16-30, second round if it’s #1-15]. That, obviously, wouldn’t help us to fill the second-base position in 2009, but it could be more valuable in the long run.

Would he really

qualify as an “A” tier FA?

by AZSEAfan on May 29, 2008 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Depends on his performance the rest of the year,

(and the last 2 years, IIRC) but I agree. I’m fairly certain he’ll be a type A. He’s one of the best 2Bs in the league.

So

they base it on position played and don’t compare his stats to everyone in baseball? I would agree then if it was based on him being a 2Bman.

by AZSEAfan on Jun 2, 2008 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe that is correct.

He’s classified as whatever position he played the most games at (2B, obviously) and compared against other players who played most of their games at that position.

Clearly, it’d be pretty silly to be comparing middle infielders to DHs or corner OFs.

I will take the draft picks.

Our team knows how to draft.

Brandon Webb, that's all I'm going to say.
