Byrnes to DL: Romero gets the call
PHOENIX (AP)—The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed left fielder Eric Byrnes on the 15-day disabled because of sore hamstrings.
The injury has bothered the Arizona outfielder since spring training, manager Bob Melvin said when the move was announced Tuesday, and the decision was made that rest was required. Byrnes had struggled at the plate, hitting just .219 with six home runs and 23 RBIs. Alex Romero was recalled from Triple-A Tucson to take Byrnes’ spot on the roster.
With the return of Tracy and the addition of Romero, we sure got a lot more left handed the last two days.

About two weeks too late
So for now, it’s a Salazar/Burke platoon…...assuming they make no further moves.
Please put Eric Byrnes on the DL
More like a month too late
They knew about this in spring ball, it became obvious shortly into the season that it was not going to go away on it’s own.
The question now is ” are they going to keep him on the DL long enough to heal fully.
Thats a great question nargel
The odds are they will bring him back too soon. It’s just in keeping with the way everything else has been handled.
I remember reading somewhere that the reason he was playing originally is because they don’t think anything less than an EXTENDED stay on the DL would heal him.
Please put Eric Byrnes on the DL
I don't recall this.
The timetables I read earlier in the season were that it would take around two weeks off for him to completely heal up, but that was out of the question. Specifically, Steve Gilbert (4/24/08): According to Byrnes, he’s been told the only way to fully get his legs 100 percent he would need to sit out for a couple of weeks and he has no plans to do that.
“It’s not a big deal,” he said. “I could play. It’s important for me to be on the field. It’s nothing serious enough to pull myself out. It definitely means a little more time working with [head athletic trainer] Ken [Crenshaw], but I’m going to do everything in my power to be ready to play every day.”
What a gamer.
He could very well have exacerbated it since then, but I’ve never read anything to suggest he would require an EXTENDED stay on the DL.
Romero is left handed, as is Salazar
In order to platoon, you usually need a lefty and a righty. ;)
If you want Romero to play most every day, than it comes at the expense of Salazar. That may not be a bad idea either mind you…...I’m just clarifying.
Melvin was quoted as saying he wants to get Burke more regular at bats. I’m skeptical he can do much as well. Maybe the team makes another move. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Please put Eric Byrnes on the DL
I didn't say play Romero almost every day.
I will clarify myself too. When I said give this kid a couple of starts, I was saying I would rather have Romero start instead of Burke. I would want Salazar to play the most.
Brandon Webb, do I need to say more?
I know what you are saying....I think
But Burke is only going to start against lefties. So perhaps you would rather see the lefty Romero face lefties than the righty Burke?
Thats pretty unlikely. He doesn’t hit lefties all that much in the minors….no reason to think he will in the majors.
Please put Eric Byrnes on the DL
I just don't want Burke batting.
I think many of us, feel the same way.
Brandon Webb, do I need to say more?
He's shown signs of life the last couple of weeks.
Appeared in 13 games, had 26 PA’s
6 for 22 , 4 walks, .273/.385/.409 3 Doubles 2 RBI
He isn’t that good, I agree, but he’s not a .182 hitter either. He’s going to get the playing time one way or another, so hopefully he will continue to awaken.
Please put Eric Byrnes on the DL
On a side note,
would you guys trade Lyon for Tony Gwyn Jr. at the end of the year?
Brandon Webb, do I need to say more?
