Ground rules
Ground rules in baseball are always important to understand. I'm somewhat new to this forum and would like to understand the ground rules at "this park." At times, it seems that snark directed specifically toward other posters is not only allowed but encouraged. Is that the case?
What are the "ground rules?"
Thanks

Ground Rules:
1) If you’re going to play the role of the smug martyr – at least be willing to respond to the criticisms of others.
2) Provocative and controversial ideas that run counter to the norms are good, but at least be willing to back them up with logic and/or evidence when they are challenged.
3) Posters who continue to pass their opinions off as facts while ignoring those that make legitimate counter-arguments run the risk of quickly wearing out their welcome.
This is an unofficial list. Jim, of course, has the final say in all matters.

The secret to my success
I routinely pass off my opinions as facts but I acknowledge those that make legitimate counter-arguments.

Yeah, me too.
But visiting the ‘Pit has learned me to get a lot more statistically inclined as well…. I’m not nearly as dismissive of sabermetrics as I used to be, (Dunno if anyone has noticed) although my understanding still isn’t nearly as good as dahlian’s or shoe’s or Jim’s.

Good question
For the moment, I’ll sit back and let everyone else answer this, since this is a community, not some kind of fascist dictatorship whereby everyone must do what I say. Much as I wish that were true. ;-)
However, on the question of snark, yes, it is indeed “not only allowed but encouraged”. I may place that into the official sign-up policy. However, you should note that I apply snark without favor or prejudice to, among others, my work colleagues, politicians, friends, Diamondbacks players and management, talk-radio windbags, my children, actresses with silicone implants, the family pets and Mrs. SnakePit. It’s what I do.

Oh, That was Snark?
I just through you were a Brit … Ba-Zing!

Now now, Captain D Bag, don't give in to stereotypes.
Not ALL Brits are so acerbic.
Some are mute. And some are mentally retarded.
Otherwise, yeah.

It’s okay ‘skins, you could mention me by name.

I thought the only rule was don't talk about Carlos Quentin
and especially how he is hitting the cover off the ball. While I would be benching our starting LF if he was on my coed company softball team at the moment.

Are you serious?
You make arguments without evidence, you repeatedly criticize players for their mistakes despite statistics otherwise (except for Eric Byrnes and Orlando Hudson, who are your sacred cows), you completely ignore it when other posters respond to your baseless claims, you use the same 8 or so words during every gameday thread over and over again, (“SWEET!!”, “Ed-its-gon”, etc.) and you decide that there are certain posters on this site whom you are going to rudely and childishly ignore completely—and now you want to bitch about people being snarky to you? Well, what did you expect?? You’ve brought it upon yourself.

A few ground rules
1) Root, root, root for the D-Backs.
2) Don’t assume your expression of fandom is the only right expression (see the friendly coexistence between the varied rooting styles of Skins, hotclaws, and nihil).
3) The more fun we can have, the better (as such, puns, snark, and social commentary are all welcome).
4) The Pit’s a great place to get to know each other… but please don’t confuse it with a dating service (in other words, we’re no Gaslamp Ball).
5) Both stathead and good ol’ boy fans are welcome. However, if you’re not interested in having your perceptions corrected by facts (numbers), this probably isn’t the place for you. In other words, if you think fielding percentage is a better defensive metric than RZR or DER, or batting average a better offensive metric than OPS you’ll find the company a bit difficult to bear.
6) The 2001 WS is all one of top moments in all of our lives as fans. But if you think Collangelo’s tenure in Phoenix was flawless because of the ring, it’ll be a tough sell to this crowd.
7) Related to number six: if you think that the answer to all the D-Backs problems is solved by a) veteran presence in the clubhouse; and b) high priced FAs, you’ll find the crowd here difficult.

6)Sure he spent money he didn't have like a futuristic drunken sailor
but he was the guy that brought MLB Baseball to Phoenix. And than saddled us with payroll to guys collecting social security. Are we finally done paying Todd Stottlemyre yet?

Julio Franco
would have been awesome!
I would much rather have had to root for Old Man Winter than Shawn effing Green.

How can
you call a guy from the Dominican Republic “Old Man Winter”??
Also, I’m not sure how exciting it’d be to be rooting for a baseball player older than my mom…..

Grandfather Time, perhaps
or knowing his love for wines, perhaps 1910 Bordeaux?
The boys in Sedona Red slugged it out with a pretty pesky poltergeist, then stayed on to dance the night away with some of the lovely ladies who witnessed the disturbance.

Be willing to admit you might be wrong
If you’re going to spout off about something and somebody corrects you, or if you’ve made a comment that is incorrect; be willing to apologize. If you’ve misinterpreted something, be willing to say so.
And by “you”, I mean “I”. I’ve made some goofs and taken offense when I shouldn’t have, but I hope I’ve apologized and smoothed things over.
Just accept that we mostly all like each other, and that we all have a responsibility to keep this a friendly place. It’s a place to discuss, not fight.
