Gameday Thread, #43: 5/17, vs. Tigers

Dammit. I was going to fill this thread full of clever kung-fu references, pitting snake-style Wing Chun against tiger-style, led off by the DVD sleeve for Tiger vs. Snake. But I fear I must have mis-remembered the title of that particular martial-arts epic, as Google is not my friend in that matter. The closest I could find is a box-set called Invincible Warriors, which includes two films called Screaming Tiger and Snake-Crane Secret. Not quite close enough at all, really.
Galarrago came into the Detroit rotation to replace Dontrelle Willis and his acquitted himself quite admirably so far, with three quality starts in his five outings. He did get knocked around a bit last time out, against Boston, being tagged for five earned runs in 5.1 innings. Scherzer was excellent against the Cubs, pitching six innings without an earned run, and with a little better work by the bullpen, might have got the win. Over on Bless You Boys, they reckon Eric Byrnes might be due a little retaliation because of the fist-pump following his homer in the opening game: I guess they hadn't been watching the 6-for-63 slump which preceded it, or they might be a bit more sympathetic.
Won't be about for at least the start of this one, since as mentioned in the recap, we're off to see The Man With Pointed Toes at Gilbert's Hale Theater this afternoon - should be home for the end of it, depending on dinner plans. It's one of those weird, 5:10pm start times today - neither one thing nor another, which mean you need to free up both your afternoon and evening for the game. Not quite sure who those appeal to, but the combination of a Chris Young bobblehead and a free concert afterwards by some C+W guy I've never heard of, have helped this one head towards sellout territory. I'm hoping we can win, clinch the series early and then send away those Tigers, screaming...

it should be a hoot
at today’s game. i wonder how many of those near sell out tickets are just there for the free concert? I hope we don’t upset them too much while we play a baseball game before hand.
I just hope we dont have a full stadium and most everyone just sitting on their hands.

Doesn't make much sense to me.
The BoB people seem to be forgetting Cabrera’s nine-minute stare at his own home run. Don’t see why one is worse than the other, particularly given Eric’s slump.
We could remind them all of that
ourselves. We could take the high road ourselves or police the game like in the days of old.

5:10 starts
appeal to people who like to get chores and errands done during the day, catch a game in the early evening and then still have time to go out for dinner and drinks afterwards.
All in all, I’m favor of ‘em.

Not as against as the first time, but still not my favorite start time. I do like the earlier Sunday starts.

Totally in accord here.
Oddly, dahlian and I seem to be agreeing a lot lately…

Huh?
I didn’t even notice a fist pump from Byrnes. Their fans are just ticked that they gave us extra outs and we took advantage.
Bingo!

I have to admit, though,
that it’s pretty nice to hear fans of an AL team refer to the Dbacks as “the best team in baseball”....
Max Scherzer is all out of bubblegum.
That's all
I heard after todays game. The tiger fans were stoked to beat the ‘best team in baseball’. It was very neat to hear.

Bit late
But here for the ride :) once again my MLB TV is behind this :(
So...time for another drink then?
They're saying
he throws out 32%.
That’s pretty solid for a 50 year old catcher.

Almost a GIDP,

Good grab by Mark on a sharp grounder.

Bit longer inning than I wanted, but they leave another runner stranded on 3rd, and the pitcher leads off next inning.

Reynolds is the new suck. If Byrnes really HAS turned it around, that is. Of course, I can’t hate on Mark because he’s 25 and making the minimum.

awesome
"Troops in desperate straights know no fear. Where there is no escape, they stand firm; When they have entered deep, they persist; When they see no hope, they fight." Sun Tzu The Art of War
Would it?
They’re already saying Scherzer’s delivery might make him injury-prone… screwball would make him even moreso.
I dunno, there were a few odd pitches that last inning that almost looked like they broke like a screwball.
Max Scherzer is all out of bubblegum.
I mean, don't get me wrong....
....if he could throw the screwball and keep from throwing his arm off, it’d be TOTALLY awesome. Intimidating too, just because nobody does it. I’d just be worried, that’s all.

I thought that was 1-0, but it went foul for 0-2.

need a better t.v. angle to see where the runner was and where the middle infielders were.
If the bunt works and Drew eventually scores, it's a great move.
If the bunt doesn’t work, which it didn’t, it’s a bad move.
Brandon Webb, do I need to say more?
Well
for a hitter who’s batting .315 in the 7th inning or later, it seems silly to give the opposition an automatic out, when just getting a deep fly ball will give you the same outcome, and getting a hit would be even better.

Hopefully, R.J. will be on his game tomorrow, and AZ’s offense and defense both show up!
I was at the game too.
Detroit fans were very loud, but this is the first time in a long time for many to see their old team, so I could understand the unbridled enthusiasm ( I think that is the right term).
DBacks fans seemed really into the game at crucial times too. THAT was nice to see.
Gotta stop that damn wave.

Disappointing
Kinda glad that I ended up on the end of the bar with the TV that wasn’t showing the D-backs game. That way I was able to enjoy my ridiculously girly drink without the aggravation of our offense not showing up. But I did pick up a little item today that I quite possibly will be putting up for a contest here. If I can figure out what the contest should be. Details to follow, I’m sure.

I’ve seen it referred to as a Miami Vice or a Lava Flow- it’s basically half Pina Colada, half Strawberry Daiquiri.

I make no excuses. I’m a girl drink drunk.
