Another All Star Snub
So Clint Hurdle has picked his staff for the All-Star game and no Melvin in sight
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3399661
You know I can't say Im surprised...but how does the NL Manager of the year and manager of the NL leading Diamondbacks get overlooked in favour of Willie Randolph and Bud Black....two managers who might very well be out of a job, in Randolphs case maybe even before this game takes place
Sigh its a real shame because you know, "THIS ONE COUNTS" etc ;)

Bud Black,
what up with that.
Brandon Webb, do I need to say more?

Hurdle doesn't have to pick the best managers in the league.
He just picks whoever he wants. Since BoMel was MOTY, maybe this deepens that supposed “rivalry” of ours.

It's payback
for Junior Spivey and Damian Miller being all stars.

You'd think...
...the league would have forgotten, by now…

it makes sense
What are you all talking about, the D-backs are winning with a lineup of seasoned all-star veterans…. Wait a minute, that’s my tigers, just substitute “losing” for “winning”, no you all are winning with talented young players playing exciting team ball, I guess you have a point…

I was surprised whe I saw it too...
- The Question is: What is manah-manah?
- The Question is: Who cares!?

Randolph??? The guy might be fired b/f the game. That’d be rich.

For some reason...
I get the mental image of Randolph sitting next to Hurdle at the ASG. Unshaven, disheveled looking. He occasionally mutters something about double switches or “that f%^#ing Delgado” through his chin hairs, but nobody really listens. Eventually Hurdle has to move to the other side of the bench because the alcohol fumes coming off of Willie are giving Clint a bit of a buzz as well.
I have time for imagination while at work.

collective record
of these three managers in 2008: 51-73. Beautiful.

Well the NL does have a habit of losing these games
Perhaps they want it to continue ;)
So...time for another drink then?

Clint Hurdle
will probably throw the game, just to guarantee that “those dagburn Dbacks” can’t win the WS.
I guess one consolation for the Rox fans of having such a crappy manager is that this way he can bring us down WITH them….

I have a theory
Since Hurdle has led his team to one of the worst records in MLB by trying really really hard to win, perhaps Hurdle’s effort to throw the game will result in an NL blowout. As a former Yankees exec once learned, “if every decision you make in life is wrong then the opposite must be correct.”

To be fair,
it’s not as if the AL selections are any better. Jim Leyland is currently at the helm of the worst team $138 million can buy and Girardi isn’t even in his second full major league season.

It's Clint Hurdle !
did you actually expect him to make a decision that makes sense?
Plus Melvin looks like he will be the All-Star manager next year any way
WHAT THE (expletive deleted) IS GOING ON WITH THIS TEAM? YOU ARE THE NATIONAL (expletive deleted) LEAGUE (expletive deleted) CHAMPIONS, START PLAYING LIKE IT!!! WE NOW ARE IN LAST PLACE WITH THE WORST (expletive deleted) RECORD IN THE LEAGUE! THAT IS UNAC-(expletive deleted)-CEPTABLE!! YOU GUYS HAD BETTER SIT DOWN AND TAKE A LONG LOOK AT YOUSELVES AND FIGURE OUT WHAT THE (expletive deleted) IS GOING ON BECAUSE THIS TEAM IS TO (expletive deleted) GOOD TO BE PLAYING THIS (expletive deleted)! NOW, I’LL BE IN MY OFFICE IF ANYBODY FIGURES ANYTHING OUT. (SLAMS OFFICE DOOR) courtesy of free7694

I actually
like it the way the NFL does it, where the head coach who actually LOSES the league championship games gets to coach in the ASG.
And no, I’m not saying that just because BoMel would be doing it this year.

I think they do that,
because those coaches will actually have time to prepare. If I’m not mistaken, the Pro Bowl is the week after the Super Bowl, so it’s reasonable to not expect the championship coaches to come back seven days after the biggest game of their lives and coach an exhibition game.
Why you would intentionally choose to reward the lesser coaches in a game where the managers have to do next to no preparation, I have no idea.
by dahlian on May 17, 2008 1:24 AM EDT 0 recs
Yeah, I think that probably IS why.
But just because a team loses in the championship does NOT necessarily mean that it has an inferior coach/manager. I think there are plenty of situations where the league runner-up the previous year is the favorite going into the next year, (this year, for example) and since the ASG determines home field advantage, it might make more sense to go with the manager who LOST the championship last year because he’s probably more likely to have a little fire in his belly for THIS year. You really think Clint Hurdle is going to give a crap WHO has home field advantage this year during the WS? Besides—the previous year’s WS managers have already GOTTEN a chance to beat the other league’s best.

Not offended
It’s at Hurdle’s discretion so maybe those guys are his cronies. If they aren’t, I still understand it given the current situation. If Colorado was competitive with the D-Backs right now then Hurdle could afford to be gracious but you think Hurdle really wants to invite comparisons with BoMel right now? The Rox have been a huge disappointment, the D-Backs have not and the less people notice that the better for Hurdle.

Excellent point.
I hadn’t even considered the possibility that it might all just be a BIT personal….

Hey, I’d rather see several of our players selected for the All-Star Game than BoMel even though he deserves to be there. As for players, Webb will be there, and who else I am not sure at this point.
