A quick question
Greetings Snakes fans,
Ignore my Braves hat - baseball fan, to baseball fans, I have a small question for the locals. I'm thinking about doing something absolutely crazy, but I need some knowledge.
What's the general time it takes to drive to/from Las Vegas to Phoenix? I am juggling the idea around to come by and see Chase Field while I'm out touring the west later this month. Catch the Dbacks take on the Nationals, and then drive the night away back out to Vegas.
Google maps has it 291 miles from my hotel in Vegas to Phoenix, and they're listing it at just over 5 hours. But only the locals could tell me the real stats.
I guess, what's the more optimistic travel times? Are there a lot of cops on US-93 that would be hateful to a baseball fan rushing to get to a game? Am I just simply nuts?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

5 or 6 hours depending on how fast you drive
You always want to watch out for cops but the presence never seems that heavy, though it will depend on what’s going on. If you’re looking at the weekend after Memorial Day it shouldn’t be too bad.
The boys in Sedona Red slugged it out with a pretty pesky poltergeist, then stayed on to dance the night away with some of the lovely ladies who witnessed the disturbance.

I've done it in 4 hours
driving like a bat out of hell at times. There are some pretty rough spots on 93 though that will slow you down, period.
Rare to see cops, more likely to see one around the small towns along the way. Especially once you get to Wickenburg, imo.
Frankly, I’d fly.

Given the cost of fuel...
I don’t blame you. But that’s just not an option for me. I’ll be doing a ton of driving, I figure a little more is not going to kill me. Will be hitting up Dodgers, Angels, Padres prior to Las Vegas, and seeing as how it’s not necessarily implausible, I’m entertaining the thought of seeing the Dbacks as well.

Ha
I generally attempt to play nice with everyone, and sometimes the best thing to maintain that is to stay local. I just don’t have the energy to get into long-winded statistical arguments with research and footnotes required, like you may have noticed over on our side of the fence, so I keep things on the down low. But this whole pursuit of all the parks is a personal venture, and the way I see it, I come bringing no hostility, trash talk, or bad vibes, so as long as I remain civil and personable, I don’t see why any of the locals would have a problem.
But anyway, I was kinda wondering who’d recognize me first, you or seton hall. :-)

Actually, more specifically,
I meant that I assumed you’d eventually end up here, asking about your trip.

Now I've never made the trip myself,
but my ex-fiancee started her undergrad career at UNLV, and she used to say that it took her between 6hrs 45min to a hair under 8 hours to go from LV to Tucson. Given that Tucson and Phx are just about 90min-2 hrs apart, depending on traffic, I’d give it 6hrs at most. As for cops, well, the last time I took the interstate between Phoenix and the Prescott/Flagstaff/Northern AZ area, I literally averaged 100mph the whole way and didn’t get any trouble from the cops. YMMV, though. Results may not be typical. ;-)

This'll be a spurt of the moment decision...
But definitely not out of the question. I actually looked up flights earlier today, and unfortunately, by the time the game would be over, even with a Brandon Webb shut out, flights stop going at 10-ish p.m. PST, and I’d have to bolt in like the 3rd inning to get through security, thus rendering the trip useless.
I’ve done some crazy things in my life, and I’d like to add this onto that list, but it’s looking like it’s going to be difficult. With a low-mileage, fuel-economic rental, I think I’d be able to do it in like 4.5-5 hrs each way (I have a lead foot), but what concerns me the most is the late night trip back to Vegas after the game, which definitely means I can’t drink during the game.
I appreciate the help you folks have given me, and it gives me a clearer understanding of what I’d be up against. Don’t know if I will or won’t do it, but if anyone goes to that game and sees a guy with an Atlanta Braves hat on, it just might be me.

Five hours sounds about right.
I haven’t done it recently, and I think they are still doing construction at the Hoover Dam, which could easily slow things down, but I imagine it should be fairly quiet, especially on the way back after the game. Again, depending on the time of day, you could hit rush-hour coming in to Phoenix, but if you’re entering town, you’ll probably be going against traffic so it shouldn’t be too bad. Sounds like a fun time – let us know how it goes!

Hoover Dam
Jim is right-driving across the dam can be terrible-when they decide to check every car it can add an hour and a half to your trip. And then sometimes there is no traffic at all. There is really no way to tell.
That being said, if you are coming back in the middle of the night, you’d probably be okay.

Ooooooo...
“The Spaghetti Bowl” right? I totally forgot about that. That alone sounds like a big delay, especially for the daytime travel I’d be doing to get to Phoenix from Las Vegas.
Thanks for the reminder there… that could play a big factor in making time.

You can go down through Bullhead City- that’s what I did a couple weeks ago out of necessity. I can’t estimate the time for you, sadly, since I was driving a U-Haul, but it only adds 30 minutes or so, according to Google.

I have made that drive between Vegas and Phoenix a few times. I usually drive around 80-85. I haven’t seen many cops, to be honest. I usually make it in around 5 hours.
I am probably going to be at one or two of those games against Washington. So, I’ll keep an eye out for a Braves cap. :)

Another question
Sorry to bring this back up after the thread got quiet for a little bit, but I figured it would be best to respond to this, instead of starting a whole new thread to bump any, more Dback-relevant topics.
Okay, so I’m still on the ropes about making a 10-hour round-trip to see the Dbacks take on, of all teams, the Nationals, but there’s still a good chance. Didn’t even think about the hour I lose crossing into Arizona, so that complicates things. Granted, I’ll get it back on the way back, which gives me an hour more to gamble the wee-night away…
That being said, to local Dbacks fans –
I have one meal to eat while in Phoenix before the game. Where do I go? I love novelty, I love unique. Nationality of food doesn’t really matter, but for the record, I love Mexican, but will not refuse anything else interesting-sounding.
All your help is truly appreciated!

You don’t lose an hour crossing into Arizona- we don’t use Daylight Savings time, so we are on the same time as Nevada right now.

Hmm
This is very interesting to hear – I appreciate the heads up with that one. Strange, but I believe you, and I think I remember hearing news about something like that in the past.

Arizona’s state policy is that we have just about as much damn daylight as we can already stand, thank you.

If you love novelty and you love unique,
I might suggest Alice Cooper’s restaurant, Cooperstown. It’s about a 5 minute walk, if that, from Chase.
So long as you’re not afraid of a lot of people wearing eye makeup.

Interesting
What kind of food do they serve?
People and eye makeup, haha. Wouldn’t bother me. You should see the freaks that wander certain parts of Atlanta. If any zealous Dbacks fans are thinking about going to Atlanta in the coming weeks to see the Snakes play, they’ll see what I’m talking about, if they do some city exploring.

While Cooperstown is nice
If you’re a fan of Mexican, you really should take advantage of that while you’re in town, since the food at Cooperstown is pretty generic. The Tee Pee is very highly-regarded, and even fed President Bush on a trip here. You might have a bit of a wait though. Carolina’s Mexican Food also has a good rep, and isn’t too far from the ballpark.
