Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]

The good news is, our reporter on the spot [that'd be Al from BCB] says , "The weather's going to be crappy again today. In fact, I'd say there's a pretty good chance that today's game will be postponed. That would mean a rescheduling, and means we'd only have a 1-in-5 chance of facing the Cubs ace Zambrano. Is there anyone wearing Sedona Red who would be unhappy with this outcome, especially after the silence of our bats the last couple of days. It's time to do the voodoo that you do, and call down the raingods upon Wrigley.

If the game goes ahead, here's a nugget of hope to cling on to: Randy Johnson has never lost against the Cubs. In 13 games against them, he's 12-0 with a 1.98 ERA - the only other team whom he's never lost to is Houston, against whom he is 4-0. But Zambrano has been really good this year, and the way our offense has been over the past couple of days, they are going to struggle. Yes, all told, I think a quick postponement and an early return to Arizona is in our best interests.

Update. Because of the inclement weather and the chance of delays and/or postponement, Johnson has been scratched, and his start will be taken by Edgar Gonzalez. The question of whether the game starts on time, or indeed at all, is still up in the air. No sign of Hudson either, I note.

Update #2. Zambrano's not starting either. Not sure whether I want the game to go on now or not. :-) Word is the start looks likely to be pushed back.

Edgar

Funny how this week Edgar looks exactly like Adrian Gonzalez’s identical twin on ESPN. My bad, that is Adrian Gonzalez of the Padres. Last week some guy with a Yankees hat was pictured for EdGon on ESPN.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5498

I am not too broken up about missing Zambrano and RJ remains unbeaten by the Cubs!!

Oops

That was Tony Pena with a wrong photo on ESPN before, not Edgar.

That was Tony Pena with a wrong photo

Alias? Is anyone surpised that there is some confusion about who Pena really is?

It is fairly under-represented as deserts go. The Sahara gets all the press.

Well looks like a Ark would be the best idea. Get our butts out of chicago. Not an impressive showing for the boys from Arizona but hope will always live in my heart.

I was thinking I might need the ark this morning – monsoon season comes to Chicago. Nothing more than drizzle the last few hours, however, so perhaps...

by peachy rex on May 11, 2008 2:54 PM EDT   0 recs

Watch the throws today…Especially from the OF. They’ll be throwing a wet ball.

Maybe some of our speed guys can get a little more agressive?

by foulpole on May 11, 2008 3:02 PM EDT   0 recs

We dodge Zambrano and he gets to pitch against San Diego on Tues. instead. I am sure we are all broken up about that. Weeeee.

CoJack and Reynolds have both shown some surprising bursts of speed this season.

Jackson tied for the team lead

With that, his fourth triple of the year. He only had two his entire career before this season. He has also stolen as many bases this year as in his whole career prior to 2008. So, yes, I think we can say he has improved his wheels a LOT.

by Jim McLennan on May 11, 2008 3:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't know where Gamecast got its picture of Gonzalez

but it doesn’t look a thing like him.

by luckycc on May 11, 2008 3:28 PM EDT   0 recs

Do you think that EdGon is pushing it a little bit with the pink neckless?

by foulpole on May 11, 2008 3:28 PM EDT   0 recs

He just loves his mother :-)

I saw Upton with the pink wristbands too.

Which came first?

The film or the song? I kinda associate the two.

by Jim McLennan on May 11, 2008 3:37 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

According to Wikipedia, the title of the movie comes from the song.

"Look, I'm not a financial expert or anything, but I'm pretty sure that a zeppelin is an excellent investment opportunity."

Does anyone know how we bid on the pink bats. I want CJ’s from todays game :)

by csktech on May 11, 2008 3:29 PM EDT   0 recs

me dos

but they’ll probably go for a pretty penny

Baseball season, when everything becomes right in the world.

by seton hall snake pit on May 11, 2008 3:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Are all the bats going up for bid? I don’t see CoJack’s bat there right now, but they’ve got a bat signed by Byrnes, and- this one is puzzling- a bat signed by Mariano Rivera. Huh?

Not surprising, but I do enjoy watching him struggle.
