Gameday Thread, #38: 5/11 vs. Cubs

Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]
The good news is, our reporter on the spot [that'd be Al from BCB] says , "The weather's going to be crappy again today. In fact, I'd say there's a pretty good chance that today's game will be postponed. That would mean a rescheduling, and means we'd only have a 1-in-5 chance of facing the Cubs ace Zambrano. Is there anyone wearing Sedona Red who would be unhappy with this outcome, especially after the silence of our bats the last couple of days. It's time to do the voodoo that you do, and call down the raingods upon Wrigley.
If the game goes ahead, here's a nugget of hope to cling on to: Randy Johnson has never lost against the Cubs. In 13 games against them, he's 12-0 with a 1.98 ERA - the only other team whom he's never lost to is Houston, against whom he is 4-0. But Zambrano has been really good this year, and the way our offense has been over the past couple of days, they are going to struggle. Yes, all told, I think a quick postponement and an early return to Arizona is in our best interests.
Update. Because of the inclement weather and the chance of delays and/or postponement, Johnson has been scratched, and his start will be taken by Edgar Gonzalez. The question of whether the game starts on time, or indeed at all, is still up in the air. No sign of Hudson either, I note.
Update #2. Zambrano's not starting either. Not sure whether I want the game to go on now or not. :-) Word is the start looks likely to be pushed back.

Edgar
Funny how this week Edgar looks exactly like Adrian Gonzalez’s identical twin on ESPN. My bad, that is Adrian Gonzalez of the Padres. Last week some guy with a Yankees hat was pictured for EdGon on ESPN.

Jackson tied for the team lead
With that, his fourth triple of the year. He only had two his entire career before this season. He has also stolen as many bases this year as in his whole career prior to 2008. So, yes, I think we can say he has improved his wheels a LOT.

"Look, I'm not a financial expert or anything, but I'm pretty sure that a zeppelin is an excellent investment opportunity."
So, I’ve decided I love baking, apparently. Which has some advantages and some disadvantages. Like, yesterday, we were at the grocery store, and the bakery was giving away cookie samples, and they were pretty bad, actually. Now, six months ago, I would have thrown the cookie away, but now I decided to eat the whole thing to see if I could figure out what was wrong with it.
Too much vanilla was part of the problem, I decided.

He tried to lead off the first with a bunt, too. So, weird.
"Look, I'm not a financial expert or anything, but I'm pretty sure that a zeppelin is an excellent investment opportunity."
He has four extra base hits,
in a hundred plus at bats this season (all doubles). It’s not like he’s giving up any power by trying to bunt on.
His stuff has been really good today,
His biggest problem has been trying to be too fine on the corners. That and the two mistake pitches – the fastball to Lee and the slider he tried to make break all the way to Altoona.
Well,
kid’s ONLY 25. I still have hope he can be more than simply a 5th/6th starter.

His range has been a limited on some plays,
but with his tiny frame he’s great at making quick adjustments to balls in front of him.
The bounced ball off Edgar today and the grounder he gobbled up while trying to cover second yesterday were both excellent plays.

Nice job
“Hey, Edgar – you’re starting today. We need five innings, two runs or less.”
“Sure, boss.”
That kinda illustrates his value. Anybody, anytime…
I think he does better in that sort of role

I’m curious why we see Burke pinch-hitting here. Why not Salazar? Unless they’re holding Salazar back to pinch-hit later.
But, as Burke draws a walk, I won’t complain too much.

When kids play soccer or baseball or whatever in the street, you yell out “CAR!” when someone is driving down the road and you have to stop playing for a few minutes. So, they’ve adopted it for stops in play for pitching changes.
"Look, I'm not a financial expert or anything, but I'm pretty sure that a zeppelin is an excellent investment opportunity."
You know when you're playing baseball in the street,
and a car comes, and someone yells “CAR!!”? And it leads to a stoppage in play? Yeah. It’s Mark Grace’s thing.
Max Scherzer is all out of bubblegum.
So does it mean you want a change of pitcher?
Is that what the fans mean when they hold up CAR signs?

Granted,
Gameday makes that strike 3 look like it was pretty far outside.
Max Scherzer is all out of bubblegum.
Hirkoi Kuroda no hitter thru 6
updates on the way
I'm not normally a fan of scruff
But I am loving it on Mark Reynolds. It really helps define his face.
I saw some dude on the subway yesterday
who I thought was Mark Reynolds. Then I remembered the Dbacks aren’t intown.
Max Scherzer is all out of bubblegum.
Well, it would, yes
except it clashes with the red juuust a tad. ;)
As does Miggy’s pink catcher outfit.

And....
our bullpen is just about to put ANOTHER game out of reach.
Max Scherzer is all out of bubblegum.
Believing their own hype!!
I guess the club spent too much time reading about themselves in SI, and not paying enough attention to their skills…I hope the flight home consists of nothing more than Kirk Gibson screaming at them for 3 1/2 hours!!
Thanks
Its just a lame feeling :( at least the D-Backs have tomorrow to pick themselves up, I’d just hate to be a Reading player tonight, in saying that some of them dont deserve to sleep after certain performances holds tongue on rant it’s true how they say you go through all the emotions when something goes badly ;)
Losing = bad
Losing to the Cubs = bad x 10. I have to go in to work and listen to the supervisor gloating tomorrow. And he wasn’t even my supe back in October. :-(
I know the feeling...
Indiana is Cubs territory – – Cubs fans have the arrogance of Red Sox fans with no titles to show for it!
Seriously.
At least when Cubs fans brag these days, you can tell ‘em to STFU because we have a title…...
Max Scherzer is all out of bubblegum.
That's enough for me
Thanks for a lovely weekend, boys – please get your heads out of your collective asses and start playing some ball!!
In other news
Hairston homered for the Padres this afternoon, his fifth of the year. He’s currently hitting .221.
He came in hitting .222
and went, what, 1 for 4… so, it’s close
by snakecharmer on May 11, 2008 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Byrnes at .226
But when you take into account park factors…
by Jim McLennan on May 11, 2008 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I have watched more than a few Padres games this year and Hairston is clueless playing D in LF and even worse in CF.
He is costing his team outs, bases and runs.
Penelope feels that a little mojo could help our boys climb back into this one.
Once again they don't show the replay of the last out.
On Friday, Upton looked safe, but was called out and there was no replay. Today Aguie looked safe, but was called out and there was no replay, but I guess I shouldn’t dwell on this, because whenever there is a really close call and the ump calls it wrong, the T.V. station never shows the replay.
Brandon Webb, do I need to say more?
As for the game.
HOW THE FUCK DO WE GET SWEPT BY THE FUCKING CUBS, LET ME REPEAT THAT, THE FUCKING CUBS.
Brandon Webb, do I need to say more?
On the other hand
Looks like the Dodgers will very shortly be asking the same question – only more so – about the Astros, who just scored six runs in the eighth to take a four-run lead.
It also means Chacon gets his eighth straight no-decision!

For an MLB record.
And, I remember during the Stros-DBacks series, someone posed the question about whose streak would go longer: Zito’s loss streak, Chacon’s ND streak, or Webb’s win streak.
All 3 are still alive I do believe.
Yes, I am a nerd.
Not quite a record.
Randy Lerch made ten straight starts for the 1977 Phillies without any decisions. However, Chacon’s streak is more impressive, in that he’s thrown at least five innings every time.

Interesting...
the Astros radio guys (who I don’t have much respect for btw) said something about a “MLB record.”
You’ve got me curious.
From Yahoo! Sports:
“Houston starter Shawn Chacon ended up with his eighth straight no-decision to start the season—tying a major league record. He gave up two runs and seven hits in six innings and struck out three. The nine-year veteran, in his first season with the Astros, joined left-hander Dick Stigman of the 1965 Minnesota Twins as the only pitchers to have no-decisions in their first eight starts of a season.”
It’s all about the phraseology.

I made a FanPost...
over at Crawfish Boxes. Thank you for the help on some of the research.

Confirmed
Valverde nailed it down. The Dodgers were outscored 20-6 by the Astros over the three-game series, which makes our 16-7 seem respectable.

It's kinda interesting...
Kuroda had a No hitter through 6.2 and the Astros didn’t score after the 2nd yesterday. Almost 14 scoreless innings.
