Quentin is Killing It
Carlos is heating up as he is second in the AL in slugging percentage & runs and 5th in RBI's. He might be the White Sox All-Star this year. The one thing the article doesn't mention is how he is walking more. After 80 AB's Carlos has walked 14 times while only striking out 13 times.
In Arizona, last year Quentin only walked 18 times all season while striking out much more often. While dumping Valverde at his peak value was a great move, unloading Carlos' at his lowest possible point was a bad one.
I'd rather have Carlos in LF for the Snakes compared to Eric. This move drove me nuts at the time and will continue to drive me nuts for the next three years.

Yeah, hated to see him go too. But I think the change in scenery helped him turn it around.

That may be,
but it’s not as if fans were constantly dogging him or the veterans and management were hostile to him.
I think he just needed a chance to get healthy and play every day.

Upton
made Q redundant, not Byrnes. Not that Byrnes’ extension helped, mind you.
Maybe the ChiSox will finally forgive us for taking Chris Young off their hands instead of Brian Anderson?
All in all, I’m really glad to see Quentin do so well with the Sox. I felt bad for him last year.

No, it was the Byrnes contract,
we could have let him walk at the end of the year and given the job to Q.
Upton was always a given in the outfield. He came up a year or two sooner than expected, but management knew he would be here at some point.
It was Byrnes making the step from platoon player to average outfielder and Moorad falling in love with him as a marketing tool that left Quentin with no place to play.

You hit the nail on the Head
It came down to Byrnes or Q and the decision was made by the marketing department not the baseball people.

I don't think he'd be the same player here
a change of venue was a definite need for him. Plus the AL is more of a fastball league. The NL is all about location and finesse. If it moves Q isn’t going to hit it.

no kidding
how many AB’s does he have? All fastballs that home run record would be nearly toast by now.

So nobody in the AL throws a breaking ball?
I disagree the NL is more of the hard throwing fastball league, the NL has 14 of the 20 leaders in K’s. The league that doesn’t have the DH will always see more fastballs.
We gambled and thought Byrnes was going to be better in 2008, and we lost. Not the end of the world, as we do have the best record in baseball.

Well
we also didn’t know whether Q would recover from his shoulder injury, and we still don’t know whether it’ll be a recurring problem.

We could have
signed a Geoff Jenkins type as a back up plan/platoon left hander.
Q’s place on the team doesn’t change the fact that giving a three year $30 million to a 32 year old average left-fielder is a poor allocation of resources. Making that decision when you already have reasonable options in house (making 4% as much money!), is inexcusable.

Q’s health was a pretty big question mark when we signed Byrnes (and when he was traded). Plus, we had young players at 1b, ss, 3b, CF and RF that we not exactly lighting the world on fire with the O or their D. Byrnes’ production was somewhat predictable.
Q was basically part of the Haren deal. Haren is looking pretty good to me so far.

but
would we have haren if not for that trade? i don’t remember exactly how it all went down, but didn’t we include the guy we got from chicago for quentin in the trade with oakland?
i have been missing q (i had to be one of his biggest fans last year and am glad he’s doing well- i’ll probably always root for him), but thinking of it as a q for haren trade makes it easier to swallow.

We did turn Chris Carter
into Danny Haren but I have a hard time believing that the White Sox wouldn’t give up a 21 year old in A ball for something else in our system.

I'd say the opposite,
I have no doubt that we would have been able to find another player in our system that Beane would have taken than Chris Carter. Carter was probably the fifth or sixth most important person dealt in that trade – a toss-up between him and Aaron Cunningham.

Good to be Here and loving the site
But I still think there was a way to get the Haren trade done holding onto Q. I mean the A’s don’t do the deal unless they get one specific single A 1B, Q became expendable when we resigned Byrnes.
We let Byrnes walk and Q is in LF for us.
