This is just a quick thread; I'm thinking there will be wifi at the Staples Center and I can write more, but if you are seeing this, there clearly wasn't. :-) Battle of the Randys, Part 2 tonight: The Unit Strikes Back, we hope...

Staples Center?

But why??

I assume he meant LA Convention Center, since that’s where the convention he’s going to is.

I hope that mix-up was taken care of before they left the hotel. =)

soco's keys to the game

1) Watch “Harold and Kumar Go To Guantanamo Bay”
2) Desperately wish for a slice of pizza, or cake, or a burger, or hell, a loaf of bread.
3) Feel guilty for feeling this way
4) Hopefully catch a few innings of the game
5) Dessert?

The boys in Sedona Red slugged it out with a pretty pesky poltergeist, then stayed on to dance the night away with some of the lovely ladies who witnessed the disturbance.

Lineup

C. Young cf .224
A. Ojeda ss .417
O. Hudson 2b .253
C. Jackson 1b .368
M. Reynolds 3b .273
J. Upton rf .361
C. Burke lf .133
M. Montero c .250
R. Johnson p .000

Byrnes sits again, and Drew gets a day off.

It sounds like Bam Bam has been playing with two sore hamstrings since Spring Training. Let’s hope that he’s back in the lineup soon.

by foulpole on Apr 25, 2008 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is Snyder hurt?

It seems odd to be sitting him against the lefty. That would seem to squander the advantage of having a left-handed back catcher.

by dahlian on Apr 25, 2008 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just realized

that this meant Randy was pitching and Hammock wasn’t catching him.

Remind me again why Hammock is on the roster?

by dahlian on Apr 25, 2008 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's a better defensive catcher

and, with a lot fewer starts, is likely still batting better than the snail.

by nargel on Apr 26, 2008 3:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

For the Padres

B. Giles rf .277
S. Hairston cf .197
A. Gonzalez 1b .284
K. Kouzmanoff 3b .280
K. Greene ss .218
J. Huber lf .312
J. Bard c .247
C. Crabbe 2b .143
R. Wolf p .200

Hairston continues to hover around the Uecker Line, and still bats second in the lineup. Mysterious.

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

Found the game!

I was wondering how the hell this was going to work. The Suns are on FSNAZ, but I knew the game was supposed to be on TV. Good thing I checked the cable guide. Cox is showing it on the channel they usually use to show previews of digital channels (Cox 7 in Tucson).

by azshadowwalker on Apr 25, 2008 10:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, it's on FSNAZ+

It’s a new, extra channel for the Arizona market. Most cities with two teams who frequently play at the same time have that option… well, okay, Bay Area does… Chicago does… others do too. Anyway, welcome to the big leagues. ;)

CY really needs to be moved down in the lineup…

by dahlian on Apr 25, 2008 10:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Definitely. I think he’d be more comfortable there. But who do we put in the lead-off spot?

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

by kishi on Apr 25, 2008 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Drew, Byrnes or Hudson

It’s not rocket science. You just want some who can get on base and whom you’re comfortable getting 5-6 at bats in a game.

I think people definitely overstate the value of having a lead off hitter that can steal 30 bases.

by dahlian on Apr 25, 2008 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Um....

I think we’ve already discussed NOT leading off with Byrnes….

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

by DbacksSkins on Apr 25, 2008 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why?

I actually like Byrnes as a lead off guy because he tends to change his approach, take more pitches and not try to act like a 30-homerun guy as he does when he’s in the three-hole.

by dahlian on Apr 25, 2008 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hudson’s OBP is lower than Young’s right now, and Byrnes didn’t seem comfortable when he led off earlier in the season. Drew might work, though. Might be worth giving him a shot.

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

by kishi on Apr 25, 2008 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He did it last season,

and he’s hitting better now.

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

by DbacksSkins on Apr 25, 2008 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

For one,

you can throw out the season-to-date numbers because they’re just about meaningless when it comes to projection.

Young won’t be able to keep his OBP up over Hudson’s for much longer if he’s striking in over one third of his at bats. Remember, he still needs to prove he can hit over .237 for an entire season, because right now he’s a career .236 hitter in 725 major league at bats.

by dahlian on Apr 25, 2008 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Talk about

by DbacksSkins on Apr 25, 2008 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

A bit yes,

but a) peripherals are less prone to fluctuation than batting average and b) this is a continuation of a problem that plagued him last season and is a legitimate question mark concerning his future performance.

He was striking out a quarter of the time last year. Even at that rate he’s not a capable lead off man.

by dahlian on Apr 25, 2008 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess

BoMel figured, hey, we’re playing the Padres, so we might as well let Augie, Burke, and Miggy start tonight.

by DbacksSkins on Apr 25, 2008 10:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Meh,

the drop off in offense between Snyder and Miggy is minimal if any. It’s just odd to see him in there against a lefty.

Randy must really not like throwing to Snyder.

Evening, folks

Just got back from the Convention Center – next door to the Staples Center, I believe. :-) They had wi-fi there, but a) you had to pay for it, and b) I was too busy talking to the warped minds behind the likes of Werewolf in a Women’s Prison...

Good news from the tech-gods: “We’re more confident about the situation this morning, but how things go today is going to provide us the real information we need to make a useful assessment of improvement. As I said we’re still in test mode. I’m not predicting an outage, but because we’re still recovering and we haven’t seen how well we operate during peak load, I can’t rule anything out. Obviously, we’ll be doing everything we can to avoid that.” So far, so good…

And similarly for the Big Unit, it would appear…

by Jim McLennan on Apr 25, 2008 10:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hi Jim!

Wait, they’re still in test mode??? They moved over NFL blogs, which have nothing going on at the moment, and that affects the peak load?? I can’t believe they wouldn’t do load testing on those servers…

‘Skins and I noticed that a few of the widgets were missing from the sidebar, so we added ‘em back. And fixed the official admin email address. :)

Not last time I looked!

Appeciate that. Dunno what happened there! As for the NFL, it is the NFL draft this weekend, and so that is probably the busiest weekend for our sibling blogs outside the season – much bigger thing than our draft, for example.

True, that'll get activity

On (Flawed?) Rationalization

Okay, I was reading this article over at Gaslamp Ball, and I’m obviously not going to respond there, because it’ll start an argument, and I don’t want to have to use up all my Magic Missile spells on them.

But, looking over it, doesn’t there seem to be a bit of a fallacy to their logic: maybe they’ve largely been playing in pitcher’s parks, but so have their opponents. Comparing hitters parks versus pitchers parks only really seems relevant when comparing players in situations where they didn’t face each other.

As for facing tougher pitching, maybe that’s a valid thing, but that’s really just saying, “Man, our hitters aren’t good enough to hit good pitchers.”

And none of it explains why their bullpen has the worst ERA in the National League.

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

by kishi on Apr 25, 2008 10:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

"a bit" of a fallacy

Absolutely yes. :) I never really understood that logic! They do play more games there than their opponents do, but they all have to deal with the conditions. San Francisco is also a really difficult waterfront park to hit homers in (a certain ex-LF not withstanding), I don’t hear the Giants complaining about it. Maybe they did at first, I don’t know, but they learned to deal with that. The fans are just using that as an excuse.

by snakecharmer on Apr 25, 2008 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The biggest fallacy

is that even though they’ve faced tough competition, that competition has all come from within the division.

So if they’re expecting things to get any easier, they’re wasting their time.

by dahlian on Apr 25, 2008 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh yeah,

and the metrics they used to rate opposing pitching faced was arbitrary and, well, just plain ridiculous.

by dahlian on Apr 25, 2008 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let's face it,

the Padres suck, Padres fans (at GLB and otherwise) are a bunch of whiners, and San Diego only doesn’t suck because of all the Zonies there.

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

by DbacksSkins on Apr 25, 2008 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You know, this afternoon on one of the XM baseball shows they were interviewing one of the Padres announcers. They asked him what was going wrong. This guy actually had the nerve to complain about the Padres schedule! He whined that they had to play, ahem, 15 in a row against the NL West. He thought they would have a much easier time if they could play Pittsburgh or Florida or something.

Ahem. How many games into an all-NL West stretch are we? We seem to be doing pretty well, thanks. I know the pitching in this division is a little harsh, but come on. Is anybody buying this “too many NL West games” argument when they can just look at the Diamondbacks schedule?

by SongBird on Apr 25, 2008 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Huh?

They’re going to have to play these games anyway- did he want the Padres beating up on the Nationals for a while to build up their self-esteem before they had to face the big, bad, dangerous NL West? And all the NL West teams are playing an NL West heavy schedule. Which, really, works fantastic with how hot the Diamondbacks have started out.

Yeah, he just seems to be looking for something to complain about. It’s like the complaining about the pitching they’re facing- if their team is good, they’ll win a good number of games no matter who they’re playing.

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

I guess we just saw why.

Just seems dumb to bring on a lefty when we’ve got the lineup already stacked with righties because of Wolf.

They’ve only got three righties in the bullpen. Maybe Black is looking to see if his offense will come out of their coma before he starts worrying about match-ups.

Heh

I was just watching the clips from the game so far, and after playing MLB 06: The Show so much, I’m so used to hearing Matt Vasgersian that I didn’t even think the fact that it was the Padres feed at first.

As a sidenote, I wish that MLB would give me an option to let me automatically pick running the clips in Windows Media Player, rather than asking me every time. But that’s neither here nor there, I suppose.

Scored the go-ahead run a couple of miles up the road. Are we cheering for the Rockies or the Dodgers in that series?

In other news: LA is much more hilly than I thought. And, downtown, the difference between million-dollar loft apartments and phenomenal numbers of homeless people is often less than a block.

it’s right here. And here’s the post in question:

Giving this some more thought

"Why do they refuse to let the up and coming stars play, yet keep giving at bats to washed up veterans? Maybe we should trade them while we have a chance…"

I agree to a pt, but here’s the problem. The market for Drama is thin – I don’t think we would get much in return. His weaknesses have been on full display thus far and its clear he’s not the guy we saw a year ago. But I think the only thing we might be able to get in return would be a DbacksSkins-type commenter and as much as Drama has sucked so far this season, that guy is hundred times worse and I’d rather see Drama struggle and hope he can return to form.

I hate the USC band with the fiery passion of a thousand suns.

My first ever CFB game was the 1996 Rose Bowl. After Northwestern beat Notre Dame to begin the season, my dad told his NW alum-friend that if they made to the Rose Bowl, he would pay for us all to go to the game.

I quickly lost track of how many times I heard that god-forsaken USC fight song, but it implanted itself on my spine. To this day, whenever I hear it I get nervous, agitated become prone to violent outbursts. Thankfully, it’s a short song.

I went to the Stanford-ND game in Palo Alto and was hoping for a great follow up to the nun drum majors waving crucifixes that got them banned from South Bend.

Unfortunately, the administration cracked down on them and they played the whole game straight. At the very least they could have done a “Great moments in minority hiring practices” half time show in honor of Charlie Weiss’ miracle three win season.

Hey now, they are facing some tough pitching, remember? Randy Johnson is a future Hall-of-Famer!

Who knows what they are going to do when they keep getting Penny, Webb, Haren, Lincecum, etc over and over again. I sympathize really. I lived through last season with the D-Backs. Of course, they were still winning games while not being able to hit.

It's probably a testament to our team...

Cuz the Padres can’t do $H1T with it.

Of course, they were still winning games while not being able to hit.

And that is why I don’t feel too sympathetic. If the Padres are going to win, they need to find ways around their struggles. If your pitching is weak, you better have some sluggers. Can’t hit? Better have lights-out pitching for all nine innings- or however many it takes. ;-)

Did the Dodgers just try to steal again?

OMG, Reynolds catch just made Top 10 plays on Sportscenter. Sportscenter knows the DBacks exist?

Nah.

They probably think he plays for the Giants or the Dodgers or something.

Goes without saying...

That this was much more satisfying than the fucking Suns tonight. I lack the eloquence to use another adjective for them.

Recap up shortly.

Perhaps “accursed” or “blighted”? Just a few suggestions.

Apparently they think “Defense wins Championships” is less a cliche, and more a myth. Unsurprisingly, the Spurs keep proving them wrong.

"Defense wins Championships" is ABSOLUTELY a myth.

Case in point, SOMEBODY in the NBA wins a championship every year.

Ha. Ah, yes. Pro basketball is definitely not a favorite of mine. Sometimes I think I am the only person in Phoenix who doesn’t really care if the Suns win or lose.

I'm all about the Hoyas,

but in the NBA, I couldn’t care less. I hate the Suns less than any other team, (since they’re from Arizona) so I root for them. I guess.

I’ve developed a general apathy towards basketball.

Doesn't seem strong enough.

Maybe if they’d bothered to show up, I’d put some effort into being disappointed in them.

Sigh

Yeh, and the fans let them know it by booing too. I was there and while I love the Suns as much as the Diamondbacks, for some reason I am not all that upset over their horrific performance in Game 3. Just a waste that that talent can’t put it together to beat those nasty Spurs who I hate more than any other team, even the Lakers. Oh well, I’ll be there on Sunday and hopefully they will manage to win that game to take it back to S.A. Too bad I will be missing the Webb vs. Peavy matchup though, but I will be following on my Palm.

Wow, did I just see that the Mets are 11-11? Wow, and we are 11 games over .500. This has been a wonderfully strange April.

Also

the Cubs lost yesterday and today, while coming into yesterday’s game, we were tied for the best record in beisbol. So we’re now two games up on them.
