Gameday Thread, #22: 4/24 vs. Dodgers

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Los Angeles Dodgers

Edgar Gonzalez

Chad Billingsley
RHP, 0-3, 6.14

Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]

Thanks to the wonders of technology [though there will be some finger-crossing on my part!], this is being written in Phoenix, but by the time you read it, we'll be in LA. With this being only a two-game set, our run of series victories has ended, but we can still take a split if we win this one. Edgar takes the mound, and even if he represents the back end of our rotation, he has still probably pitched better than Billingsley - 20 K's in 14.2 innings is nice, but less so when accompanied by eleven walks.

Keys to the game, with apologies to soco:

  1. Edgar making sure the ball stays in the park
  2. Justin making sure the ball stays in his glove
  3. Chris making sure the ball is put in play
  4. Eric making sure the ball goes more horizontal than vertical
  5. Fortune cookie? [Our hotel is in Chinatown...]

soco's keys to the game, from the real OG:

1) Go to Pei Wei for some Coconut Curry
2) Dream of chocolate cake frosted with whipped cream and sliced strawberries
3) Go over budget for the next couple months
4) Build a rocket to the moon
5) Dessert?

The boys in Sedona Red slugged it out with a pretty pesky poltergeist, then stayed on to dance the night away with some of the lovely ladies who witnessed the disturbance.

Please

Eat the coconut curry at pei wei and don’t take any home in your car. It stinks it up something fierce …

by Captain D Bag on Apr 24, 2008 8:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Sir, I do NOT leave leftovers

Not at Pei Wei, and especially not curry of any sort.

Wow

Soco, I don’t know how long you have had that post-script tag for, but it is the best thing Ive seen all week. Now lets see a “disturbance” coming off the d-backs’ bats tonight. I require a series win against the Dodgers.

by Counsellmember on Apr 24, 2008 8:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I picked it out at the beginning of the season

I think it’s the longest sig right now.

Impossible

It’s only a 2 game series; best we can do is split now.

So

you want us to positively cream them? In revenge for our humiliation last night?

That’d work. I’m open to possibilities.

I had coconut curry leftovers for dinner last night. Sadly, the restaurants in this town are one of the few things I’ll miss when I leave.

Hmmmm.

Good luck with that. Mine was made to get to Mars, and it used a vacuum cleaner, car battery, a joystick, and everclear. It was made out of aluminum cans. I called it the Bean-with-Bacon Megarocket.

MAJOR props for anyone who gets the reference without using Google or Wiki.

From behind enemy lines...

Looks like we’re back – hopefully, this time, the issues have indeed been resolved! Type gently this evening though, folks…

Here is our current location, deep inside Dodger territory. Just getting ready to head off to Chavez Ravine, barely a couple of miles up the road from our hotel here, the intriguingly-named Best Western Dragon Gate Inn. After some debate, I will be wearing the Diamondbacks shirt, so rather than going undercover, I intend to flaunt our superiority by my mere presence.

If I don’t make it back, ‘skins, ‘charmer and Azreous, please take care of the site. :-)

See you later!

by Jim McLennan on Apr 24, 2008 8:55 PM EDT   0 recs

I recommend....

....you get there before the 1st inning and leave after the 9th. That way, you won’t have to deal with any Dodgers fans, except during the actual game. (Well… the 3rd-7th innings, anyway)

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

by DbacksSkins on Apr 24, 2008 8:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Aint that the truth

Went to a game there once with a relative who lived there (and are Dodger fans) and while we got to the parking lot by the 1st inning or so, it was the 4th by the time we got in (cause of long lines at will call) and they wanted to leave by 7th or so. Kind of sad…

by Bcawz on Apr 24, 2008 10:39 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Even though EdGon is pitching,

I think we should be able to pull this one off. I forgot to drink a beer last night, and it harmed us. I happened to get out of work early today, so I’ve already gotten my GameDay beer taken care of. Nothing to worry about, should be a cinch.

Not particularly.

Well, maybe it's just me.

I’ve always thought that CY kinda looks like Dino the Dinosaur. No idea why.

Today’s lineup:

C. Young cf .212
S. Drew ss .284
O. Hudson 2b .262
C. Jackson 1b .359
M. Reynolds 3b .288
J. Upton rf .375
M. Montero c .000
J. Salazar lf .286
E. Gonzalez p .250

It looks like BoMel loaded us up with LHBs against Billingsley as Bam Bam and Snyder get the day off.

by foulpole on Apr 24, 2008 9:27 PM EDT   0 recs

Is this our first game without Byrnes starting?

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

by kishi on Apr 24, 2008 9:28 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes.

It’s also our first game (for obvious reasons) with Miggy starting.

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

Those other guys:

R. Furcal ss .398
A. Jones cf .159
N. Garciaparra 3b .182
J. Kent 2b .262
J. Loney 1b .296

M. Kemp rf .286
C. Billingsley p .333

by foulpole on Apr 24, 2008 9:28 PM EDT   0 recs

Look....

I know Joe Torre has a hard-on for veterans and all, but why the heck is Jones batting second????

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

by DbacksSkins on Apr 24, 2008 9:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Too,

Why is Young still batting lead off?!?

I don’t know understand why BoMel has decided that everybody’s line up spot is fluid except for the career .235/.301 leadoff hitter.

by dahlian on Apr 24, 2008 9:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

While I agree,

I think Andruw Jones batting 2nd makes less sense than CY batting leadoff.

Yawn

Hate these late starts, but lets go D-Backs all the same, nice to see Miggy back and i’ve got the Iron Man down as my MLB.com home run streak man tonight on the basis of 2 HR’s from 4AB against Billingsly.

Still, night all!

by Wimb on Apr 24, 2008 9:49 PM EDT   0 recs

Sleep well, Wimb.

If we’ve got anything to say about it, you should have good news to wake up to.

I hope this game is well in hand by 9pm. With all apologies to the D-Backs, I am turing on LOST then. Take heart though, I should have my Tivo set up again by next week.

by SongBird on Apr 24, 2008 10:05 PM EDT   0 recs

Bah, who needs Lost?

Just skip it during game days and come back for next season. You won’t actually miss any meaningful plot points. There aren’t any.

The lineup

CY (I just give up on this one)
CJ (OBP machine)
Hudson (Him or Byrnes, because your two and four hitters should be better than your three hitter. I go with Hudson for the lefty)
Upton (Because by the end of this season he’ll be our best hitter, if not already)
Reynolds (clean up)
Byrnes (where his stolen bases actually mean something)
Drew
Snyder
