Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]

Not much to say, as I am about to head off my Mrs. SnakePit's sister for a post-birthday dinner. The delayed Evil Chris Young, who sucked last time out, takes on Edgar Gonzalez, who also sucked last time out, but is at least now missing the offending tooth. Unless Evil Chris Young's count of elbows stops at one, advantage to us there, it would seem. We'll see how this goes: unlikely I'll be commenting, for dinner-related reasons [what IS is with this 5:10pm start, anyway?], but I'll be back for the wrap-up either tonight or tomorrow morning.

First

Just kidding.

I’m bored/sleepy, can’t wait for the game to start. Any ideas on how to kill 40 minutes? :)

I need the DBacks to pick me up after that piece of …. of a basketball game :(

Who let’s Tim Duncan hit a three? Honestly?!

by Captain D Bag on Apr 19, 2008 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd be glad to answer that for you

But I have a fork jammed right into my temple.

Ugh

Still fat fingers and the new posting system …

The best part was hearing the commentators complain about Manu flopping. Sigh. So true.

by Captain D Bag on Apr 19, 2008 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

If you’re up 3 and they have possession, you have to foul. YOU HAVE TO FOUL!

My 90 year old grandmother knows that, but we have 2 chances to do it, and we let them hit threes both times. I could literally cry right now.

I know. really. I know.

by Captain D Bag on Apr 19, 2008 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions

There’s no way we’re winning this series now, this is as good a chance as we’ll get to win in S.A.

Keys to the Game ...

1) Patience at the Plate. Bum Elbow + Shaky Bullpen = Long night for Padres staff.
2) Run. Bard can’t throw anyone out. Stealing and base running will be keys.
3) Put the ball in play. Preferably in the Center Field gaps that Edmonds has a hard time cutting off.
4) 6 strong innings from EdGon, handed over to our top end Bull Pen.
5) CoJack had a Cycle last night. He even had more bases than the cycle calls for. It’s a cycle to me :).

by Captain D Bag on Apr 19, 2008 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

If last night is anything to go by, Edmonds is cooked as a CF… although you might be able to squeeze another couple of years out of him in one of the corner spots, I guess.

by peachy rex on Apr 19, 2008 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

After watching Edmonds on those triples by CoJack, I think he needs a Segway out in center.

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

by kishi on Apr 19, 2008 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Edmonds was a great CF in his day but it sure looks like all the injuries have caught up to him. With Hairston, Edmonds And Giles out there, SD has to have one of the weakest OFs in the bigs.

Segway?

Don’t you mean a powered wheelchair?

I hope that this is Edgar’s last start and that he’s replaced by Petit or Scherzer.

by Philip from LA on Apr 19, 2008 7:52 PM EDT reply actions

A bit early for that

He had one bad start after one good start. Have some faith.

by paqs on Apr 19, 2008 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Eh ...

Petit and Ed Gon switching back and forth in the 5 spot wouldn’t really upset me. I just want Scherzer to stay down until the all start break … I don’t want guys figuring him out before than.

Good call, actually.

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

by DbacksSkins on Apr 19, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

What’s Edgar’s career ERA? What has he done to prove that he can be an effective starter in the major leagues?

by Philip from LA on Apr 19, 2008 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

We don’t need him to be an effective starter, just a short term solution until we get DD back. I don’t know if Petit is better or not, but from what I’ve heard, Scherzer is a future reliever.

by paqs on Apr 19, 2008 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

EdGon's career ERA against the Padres

is 4.08 in five games, just for the record.

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

by DbacksSkins on Apr 19, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

5.91

With 31 starts over 65 Games. Those big reliever outings can kill that number, to be fair.

by Captain D Bag on Apr 19, 2008 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to mention

He pitched a bunch in 2004, didn’t he?

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

by DbacksSkins on Apr 19, 2008 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

As a starter, 4.09 ERA in 2006 and 2007. Not too shabby for a #5 guy.

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

by kishi on Apr 19, 2008 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

And he won 8 games for us last year, in different roles. That’s very valuable to a team.

by paqs on Apr 19, 2008 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Just so. Not many teams can afford five real starters, but everyone needs a couple of guys who can fill in the fifth spot as necessary, take spot-starts and throw long relief… and do it for peanuts.

by peachy rex on Apr 19, 2008 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to bring up the ghost of earlier today, is it a stretch to call EdGon the Shawn Marion of the DBacks?

by Snakebitten on Apr 19, 2008 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Hmm?

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

by DbacksSkins on Apr 19, 2008 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Erm

We should wait for EdGon to choke in the playoffs for a couple of years, and whine about being underappreciated (despite being the highest paid player on the team) before we make that comparison.

by paqs on Apr 19, 2008 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Merely in the versatility sense… not the chemistry-killing locker-room cancer sense.
God today sucked. I’m still pissed.

by Snakebitten on Apr 19, 2008 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, we’re really missing Marion’s ability to defend Parker (and have him score 30) and Duncan (and have him score 30 with 20 boards)

Edgar

I’ve never felt comfortable when he pitches. The guy just makes me nervous. Of course, tonight hasn’t done anything to change that. He can’t seem to hit Snyder’s mitt. Snyder is really looking irritated, too.

by Snakebitten on Apr 19, 2008 8:01 PM EDT reply actions

That ..

And Micha has been AMAZING to this point, which I wasn’t expecting. We have three guys that can give us 6 plus solid innings while Randy get’s up to health and our 5th starter just needs to keep us in it.

I’m not basing my assessments of Edgar based on this season. He has a 5.9 career ERA. He had a 5 ERA last season. And I don’t think “winning 8 games” last season is very valuable for the team, since wins are a completely meaningless statistic. I would say that he was NOT valuable to the team b/c he posted a 5 ERA in a good chunk of innings.

I’m also a big fan of Petit and think that he deserves a shot.

In about 80 career innings if I remember correctly. And Edgar has about 200+ career innings. And Petit is about a year and half younger than Edgar. More specifically, Edgar has proven that he can’t be an effective starter IN THIS BALLPARK.

It might be a moot point. Scherzer has the potential to be much better than both of them, right now.

by Philip from LA on Apr 19, 2008 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I really wouldn't pay any attention to his 5+ ERA last season,

seeing as how we really only played him when we were getting blown out.

IIRC, his starter’s ERA was much better.

to “not trying to win”. Is Gonzalez a great pitcher? No. Would I feel comfortable going into a season with him set as our number five starter? Probably not. But that’s not his role. He’s a swing man/sixth starter. For just about any team in the game he’s an asset in that role.

For the most part he keeps us in games and gives us a chance to win, which is pretty much the most you can reasonably ask from that spot in your pitching staff.

Nah.

I just hate all the negativity and bitching this early in the season—especially when we’ve got the best record in MLB so far. Also, foulpole’s been using that nickname since before his first start of the season.

Did reynolds really think that ball could have been caught.

I don’t know if he should have tried to score or not (esp. with one out), but I would have at least like to see him get to third sooner to allow for the possibility.

by soco on Apr 20, 2008 1:41 AM EDT up reply actions

An alternate scenario

Perhaps, rather than the end of the Cold War, this is more like the early 1800s.

Arizona, the young, fresh-faced upstart is, of course, the new nation of America. The Rockies are Great Britain- enemies in hard-fought struggles, but still with a bond of a common ancestry behind them. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are France- as the French hoped for Napoleon to return their nation to glory, so the Dodgers fans put their faith in Joe Torre. The Padres, I suspect, are Spain, once a dominant power in the New World (or the NL West) but they found their glory eclipsed by Britain and America, and weakened by their own internal problems. The Giants, finally, are Portugal- they were a mighty presence once upon a time, but now are but a shadow of their former might.

So, that would make DbacksSkins overtures towards GLB the equivalent of the Adams-Onis Treaty? I don’t know.

Oh, and in this scenario, I guess the media would be Uatu, the Watcher.

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

I guess closer

but still not quite right. Why would the Rockies by the British, a world power? The Rockies should be more like a one and done nation.

The Dbacks are the rising nation-state of France; the Dodgers are the Russians, an ancient, dormant, and disorganized potential state; the Padres are…. again, the Spanish, strong now, but not for long, and the Giants are…. well, they can be the Papal States—it’s ALL downhill from here for them.

That’s good. Jim can have a new signature line – “Le Snakepit, c’est moi.”

So who’s Austria – ie, our eternal enemy once their buddies in Spain take a swan-dive?

by peachy rex on Apr 20, 2008 3:31 AM EDT up reply actions

well austria isn't really anyone yet....

theyre still a part of the sick and dying “holy roman empire.” (not holy, roman, OR an empire…. that always pissed me off)

and if this is the 1600s, then austria is almost like an ally—being Catholic and all.

I grieve to correct you, my son. Austria is about to get awfully important, eclipsing their cousins in Spain as the continental counterweight to France, and they are always – always - on the other side from us. (Hell, we prefer the Turks to the Austrians.) Indeed, if this is 1600-ish, by and by we’re going to get drawn into this nasty little spat known as the Thirty Years War… and although Vasa Sweden (hi Orckies!) do most of the fighting against the Austrians, we bankroll Swedish operations, and fight a long series of side campaigns against the Hapsburg allies in Bavaria – besides the endless god-damned war in the Low Countries against Spain.

Austria might be someone like the Mets, or even a team in the AL – their sphere of influence doesn’t directly bump into ours’ like with SD (unless you count Italy, which is to say the PCL), but they stand squarely between us and any attempt at European hegemony (ie, a pennant or WS title).

Yes, but...

...not in 1600. I didn’t even mention the TYW…. sorry, shoulda been more specific.

Oh, and they’re not gonna be on the other side from us after Napoleon crushes them. Not for a little while, at least.

Who's Poland?

And who would be the Turks? And the Venetians? Obviously, the Venetians would be some feisty, small-market team—like the Marlins, or something.

If this is 1600, and we’re France, then Spain is still enemy numero uno. After 1659, Spain is a second-rate power in Europe (and most historians consider Rocroi in 1643 as the moment Spain passes its torch to France as the pre-eminent power in the west.) From the 1630s, Austria becomes our principal rival – although indeed, Austria has been an intermittent enemy ever since the union of its house with that of Burgundy, although Spain is generally the more dangerous of the Hapsburg powers. (Certainly after the abdication of Charles V, when his empire is divided into Austrian and Spanish halves – their rulers still co-operate, but each state has its own particular objectives and policies.)

Now, Austria does eventually turn into a pumpkin – but that’s about two and a half centuries in the future.

Hmm, Poland… has to be someone friendly to whoever Austria turns out to be, and opposed to Colorado – recall, the Vasas spent their leisure time prior to the TYW trying to claim the Polish crown. The Turks are an enemy of our enemy situation, and someone no-one else really likes – if Austria is the Mets, for example, then Turkey could be the Yanks. (As France we don’t necessarily like Turkey, but they provide a very useful counter-weight to the Hapsburgs, both in the Med and pushing up the Danube valley to pressure Vienna.)

Italy is tough – none of the city-states are more than AAA, really, compared to powers like Austria, France and Spain… and indeed, many of them are more or less controlled by the heavy-weights. (The Hapsburgs and France have already spent a century squabbling over Milan; Naples and Sicily are firmly Spanish.)

Poland would be a very interesting case....

....since they need to come save the Mets from the Yankees during the second half of the century. I guess that would make whoever manages them Sobieski.

The Red Sox, perhaps? The famousest Vasa of them all very nearly came to grief fighting in Poland – that could be spun as a WS sweep, I suppose.

Terry Francona = Jan Sobieski?

Hmmmm…. I guess I could buy that.

Then again…. I have trouble seeing Clint Hurdle as Gustavus Adolphus.

Hehe – you aren’t the only one. But I’m not sure Kirk Gibson is my idea of Richelieu, either… (perhaps if he added a Van Dyke to his embryonic mustache, and wore a scarlet skullcap in the dugout.)

Hmmm.....

See, I could TOTALLY see K.Gib as Richelieu…

I suppose I could be persuaded… a scarlet skullcap would be the clincher, though.

Does this mean we can start running out a Three Musketeers theme for the youngsters? We haven’t really gotten into classic (if roistering) literature yet.

Sentences I never thought I would read...

“See, I could TOTALLY see K.Gib as Richelieu.”

Thank you, guys, for elevating the collective SB Nation IQ about 20 points. Which will help counter the co-ed pics on GLB… :-)

Yes,

we rule.

But we don’t mind co-ed pics either.
