Off-day Open Thread

No game today; happy that's the case, as I recover from the fun last night. Bit of a struggle to get up this morning, shall we say - and blue cake frosting has an interesting and colorful effect on your digestive tract, shall we say!

Today, here's an open thread. Talk about anything you want. Who ar the surprises - good or bad - of the first couple of weeks in the baseball season? Aren't you glad we didn't sign Dontrelle Willis? The Suns' chances in the playoffs, now the lineup has been set? NHL playoffs? Heck, if you want to discuss the Democratic presidential debate and who you'll vote for, go ahead. I don't get to hang my chad, so don't have a horse in that race!

Suns Fans.....

can thank my Utah Jazz for giving you this coveted re-match with those oh so nasty San Antonio Spurs. The Jazz got humiliated last night with everything on the line for home court.

So as a result, the Jazz slip to play Houston. I sincerely hope the Suns exact REVENGE for last year’s debacle and pummel the Spurs.

Go Suns!!!!

All things considered...

Utah’s almost impossible to beat at home, and they dispatched Houston last year with Yao Ming. They seem to be in good shape. Hell, I almost wonder if they just tossed last night’s game once Houston’s win was posted as final, knowing exactly what would happen with a loss.

Gordon Brown’s first three months – like or unlike September 2007 for the Mets? Discuss.

by peachy rex on Apr 17, 2008 1:12 PM EDT reply actions

Unlike.

That’s a fairly harsh comparison. I think the only political analogy to the Mets’ September 2007 would be Nixon’s 2nd presidency.

Still no Euro in Britain, though. How do our British friends feel about that? I know it had been discussed as one of Blair’s goals before he left 10 Downing St…

Can't see the Queen on a Euro Note for a while yet...

We’re by and large anti European as a country, I can’t see the Euro coming in for a while on those grounds but then again on an economic level the Euro is gaining alot of strength against the pound and we’re gradually losing industry because of higher costs over here so who knows. Either way It wont happen without a referendum and i can’t see the majority of this country voting for it.

The who “will he-won’t he” tap-dance on the possibility of calling an early election was hilariously disastrous. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a politician go from colossus bestriding the world to witless hack faster… it was like ending your honeymoon with a trial separation. Who knows – there might even be a competitive election next time round.

Certainly due for a bit of a fallback. Then again, they should be getting Chris Carpenter back in a couple months. If they’re still in contention in July, they might be able to stay there the rest of the season.

by Azreous on Apr 17, 2008 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t carpenter have an injury to his shoulder? I seriously doubt he’ll return to the high level he pitched at before.

by C. Wesley Baier on Apr 17, 2008 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought he had Tommy John surgery on his elbow in May of last year. I’ve heard of a shoulder injury as well, though, so color me unsure.

Regardless, there’s always a question as to whether a player will recover from a major injury like that. Maybe he will, maybe he won’t, but it’s a free chance at significantly improving their rotation. I don’t see the combination of Wainwright-Looper-Lohse-Wellemeyer-Thompson continuing their current pace. And let’s not talk about Joel Pineiro.

by Azreous on Apr 17, 2008 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

The Central blows

It’s not that surprising considering they play the Reds 20 times, the Astros 20 times, the Pirates 20 times (or so). The Brewers have awful defense and mediocre pitching and the Cubs are, well, the Cubs.

They could very well win it.

by paqs on Apr 17, 2008 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

The Reds, Brewers, and Cubs aren’t to be taken too lightly. The reason why the Cards are doing so well is that pitching has been pretty decent. They do have a pretty good middle of the order with Pujols, Ankiel, and Glaus. the rest of the lineup has been hitting very good. Once the pitching falls back to earth or the offense, they’ll be playing .500 ball

by C. Wesley Baier on Apr 17, 2008 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Glaus

Is barely above the Uecker Line … He’s not the threat he once was. It’s really starting pitching that is getting them through, with no ace.

by Captain D Bag on Apr 17, 2008 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I was going to mention the Cards as well.

11-4? Seriously?? Then again, they DO play in the NL Central…. if the Cardinals can keep this up, it’s gonna be “Bye bye, division title” for Piniella and the Cubbies.

Premiership Football etc

Well I’m biting my nails after Readings utter capitulation against Fulham last weekend. It now looks like 2 from 4 to join Derby in the Championship (the league below us) next year. At the top it seems like Man United have it all sown up though

Champions League looks thrilling though, Liverpool vs Chelsea round 3 and United vs Barcelona. I hate to say it but I can see Liverpool doing it again…they have this knack in Europe thats almost like Curt Schilling in the playoffs, on paper there’s no way he should keep doing it but heck he still does!

Liverpool is amazing

when it comes to European football – I’m not sure what it is, but they play at a whole other level during Champions League - and the atmosphere at Anfield has to be compared with the greatest in all of sports.

High probability of an all English final.

So I'm kinda starting to follow this hockey thing...

The Sharks are in the playoffs, and a bunch of my teammates are big fans, so I’ve started watching the post-season games. Tonight is Game 5 back at the Tank so I’m probably going to tune into that! It’s kinda interesting to watch… puzzling, but interesting..

If Boston is Titletown (as they recently proclaimed, though New York has a better claim to that) then Buffalo is the Anti-Titletown. Has there ever been a city has managed to do so poorly on the championship level as consistently as Buffalo? They’ve lost 4 Super Bowls and 3 Stanley Cups.

Prince Fielder

Just hit his first homer of the season, as the Brewers beat the Cardinals in ten. Fielder only had one homer at this point of last year too, but it does seem the vegetarian lifestyle is not agreeing with his stats. Through the first fourteen games:

2007: .296/.391/.444
2008: .224/.350/.286

I think Brewers fans should gather outside his house and waft the smell of ftying bacon in to the AC…

I was looking through the ESPN stats page, which I like because it has a lot more stats listed and more ways to split them up than Yahoo, and came across two interesting Sabermetric stats I’d never heard of before: Cheap Wins (starting pitchers that earned a win without throwing a quality start) and Tough Losses (starting pitchers who took a loss while throwing a quality start).

I wasn’t terribly surprised to see that Doug Davis was tied for the second in the majors in Cheap Wins last year- he only had two, but it seemed like it could have been more. I was surprised, though, to see Dan Haren tied for the lead in the majors in Tough Losses, with 8. Interesting. Haren threw 28 quality starts in his 34 starts last season- the exact same numbers as Jake Peavy put up.

Randy Johnson had 11 Tough Losses in 2004, which doesn’t surprise me at all.

Rockies and Padres scoreless going into the 7th...

With all the focus on their pitching, not many people have noticed that the Padres offense has been pretty uninspiring this season. Going into today’s game, they’re tied with the Giants for least runs scored in the majors, and they’re letting Jeff Francis (yeah, that Jeff Francis) match Jake Peavy so far tonight…

On top of it, Maddux is moving up his start to face us tomorrow, since Evil Chris Young is injured…. and we all know how well Maddux does at Chase. Plus, we’ll be facing a Padres squad that has been through at least a 14 inning game.

Getting into pretty rare territory

You only get an average of about seven 15-inning games per season.

by Jim McLennan on Apr 18, 2008 2:12 AM EDT reply actions

Hell

Four extra innings games alone today. That’s intense.

by Captain D Bag on Apr 18, 2008 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Splendid timing then. St Penelope at work, perhaps? We’ve hardly had to invoke her at all so far…

by peachy rex on Apr 18, 2008 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I was wondering if Purple Row had a similar champion to invoke. But I wasn’t about to offer to lend them St. Penelope, just to ward off the unicorns.

True

And, in this fellowship, I’m fine with them taking the Boromir role, sacrificing themselves to thwart the bullpen of Saruman, I mean San Diego.

I mean, they already had their ill-fated attempt to claim the Ring(s) last seasons…

Who knows we may get to see a position player pitch today… Maybe an inning for Troy boy to get out of his slump?

by singaporedbacksfan on Apr 18, 2008 2:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Ok...

That looks like four relievers the Padres won’t be able to use tomorrow; Bell, Thatcher, Cameron and Ledezma have all thrown between 24-34 pitches.

Jim, you might get those 18 innings you asked for. Maybe a couple more, the way these teams are hitting…

Talk about an Energizer Bunny of games. Just think if all the pitchers were as d e l i b e r a t e in their motions as Doug Davis… we’d still be in the tenth.

by peachy rex on Apr 18, 2008 2:41 AM EDT reply actions

And on we go

So, have the Pads got any other relievers left?

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 2:41 AM EDT reply actions

They seem to have enough pitchers

but they did run out of bench players a few innings ago.

by snakecharmer on Apr 18, 2008 2:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Erm, Meredith and Rusch? Although they’ve kept with Ledezma for a third inning… perhaps they don’t want to burn off every guy in the pen tonight. Maddux isn’t exactly a CG threat these days.

by peachy rex on Apr 18, 2008 2:44 AM EDT up reply actions

If I’m reading it right, they’ve got two relievers left. I bet they thought their bullpen would be pretty rested tomorrow, with the Peavy start tonight.

Bames lead off double.

and a sacrifice brings him to 3rd with 1 out.

by singaporedbacksfan on Apr 18, 2008 2:46 AM EDT reply actions

Come on Rockies

I think 17 innings is enough. Can’t let the Pads win this one.

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 2:47 AM EDT reply actions

On the plus side, if they get through the bottom of the inning, Tulo leads off the 18th.

by peachy rex on Apr 18, 2008 2:48 AM EDT reply actions

I'm not sure Tulo is a plus

At least if he leads off, he won’t be able to hit into a DP again.

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 2:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, it’s a plus for snickering D’backs fans like us. We get to make cracks about how even Tulo can’t ground into a DP if he’s leading off, and so forth.

by peachy rex on Apr 18, 2008 2:51 AM EDT reply actions

Oh, that's right

Does that mean all their hitters will be tired for Haren tomorrow?

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 2:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Don't know if one AB counts as tired :)

A few had one, two, or three ABs. But Giles has 8, Kouz has 7.

Lovely

Pads played two games today and the DBacks played none

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 2:58 AM EDT up reply actions

by peachy rex on Apr 18, 2008 3:05 AM EDT reply actions

Time for them to get the win?

Black is willing to push Ledezma to 4 innings… so we may not get to see a bullpen that is entirely burnt out tomorrow after all.

Sigh

It looked so promising at the beginning of the inning

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 3:06 AM EDT reply actions

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 3:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Hmm.

I think this is now the longest game since 2003 (Cards-Marlins). Before that was a 22-inning affair in 1993.

Having a hard time confirming that, but I believe that’s right.

by Azreous on Apr 18, 2008 3:33 AM EDT reply actions

I’ve actually “seen” some pretty unusual games – this one obviously, and in, erm, August 2001 I think, there was a game with a nine-run rally in the last three innings. The starters were almost all gone for both teams by then, of course…

by peachy rex on Apr 18, 2008 3:35 AM EDT reply actions

Would if be collusion if one manager said to the other ‘Let us win this inning, and we’ll call up a whole team from single-A next time we play?”

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 3:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I can’t imagine he’s had many worse. Of course, you don’t get many opportunities to rack up six or seven at-bats – and usually that means your team is smacking the ball.

by peachy rex on Apr 18, 2008 3:42 AM EDT up reply actions

This is so weird

I’m not sure home run derby would help these two teams tonight at this ball park

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 3:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe a strike-out derby – 19 for Colorado, 15 for SD so far.

Question:

Obviously I can’t see the game, but could that error be attributed to Bard being behind the plate for 22 innings?

by Azreous on Apr 18, 2008 4:13 AM EDT reply actions

It was bounced into the dirt. And Greene’s throw was high even over TC, also probably attributing to the tiredness.

Greene redeems himself a little – a painful redemption, it would seem.

Padres Bullpen

Judging by what we see today, they only have Hoffman, Kameron and Meredith left. A more patient approach tml?

by singaporedbacksfan on Apr 18, 2008 4:17 AM EDT reply actions

Kameron was in

Meredith is the only reliever left

by snakecharmer on Apr 18, 2008 4:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think Meredith is the only non-starter who hasn’t been trotted out. Hoffman only threw 11, so he’ll be live tomorrow… but everyone else is pretty much burned.

And the GIDP strikes again

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 4:17 AM EDT reply actions

Oddly, SD hadn’t hit into a GIDP until the 21st.

by peachy rex on Apr 18, 2008 4:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Looks like we won’t make that strikeout record after all.

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 4:19 AM EDT reply actions

Pity – after all we went through…

by peachy rex on Apr 18, 2008 4:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Alas, ended with 37

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 4:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, Bard didn't quite redeem himself.

I know you keep the other catcher for emergency (read: injury) situations, but that’s hell on Bard (and Torrealba).

Hopefully the Padres are completely demoralized for the game tomorrow.

by Philip from LA on Apr 18, 2008 4:19 AM EDT reply actions

That is indeed what I am hoping

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 4:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly what I was going to say

22 innings and a loss is a helluva lot worse than 22 and the win.

by snakecharmer on Apr 18, 2008 4:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Strike 3 down the middle

22 innings, 6hr 16 minutes

More stats tomorrow from Jim, I’m sure :)

by snakecharmer on Apr 18, 2008 4:22 AM EDT reply actions

They all look exhausted. And relieved.

by Philip from LA on Apr 18, 2008 4:23 AM EDT reply actions

Well, good night all. I’m exhausted just from watching – and I didn’t even pick it up until the 10th.

by peachy rex on Apr 18, 2008 4:23 AM EDT reply actions

Thanks for the fun night everyone

by SongBird on Apr 18, 2008 4:23 AM EDT reply actions

Still great news for the DBacks. 22 innings were far, far more than we could’ve reasonably hoped. Let’s see if their tired legs can hit Haren’s splitter tomorrow :)

By the way,

welcome to the ‘Pit, Philip from LA. I’m Philip from DC.

Nearly 300 comments

for a variety of topics and a game that wasn’t even ours!

P.S. Sharks win Game 5 :)

by snakecharmer on Apr 18, 2008 4:25 AM EDT reply actions

Wow, Purple Row nearly hit 1500 comments. Of course, they needed 22 innings and six hours to do it, but still.

Wow

I was watching this game and decided to go to bed at the end of the 12th. Boy am I glad I did.
