Off-day Open Thread
No game today; happy that's the case, as I recover from the fun last night. Bit of a struggle to get up this morning, shall we say - and blue cake frosting has an interesting and colorful effect on your digestive tract, shall we say!
Today, here's an open thread. Talk about anything you want. Who ar the surprises - good or bad - of the first couple of weeks in the baseball season? Aren't you glad we didn't sign Dontrelle Willis? The Suns' chances in the playoffs, now the lineup has been set? NHL playoffs? Heck, if you want to discuss the Democratic presidential debate and who you'll vote for, go ahead. I don't get to hang my chad, so don't have a horse in that race!

Suns Fans.....
can thank my Utah Jazz for giving you this coveted re-match with those oh so nasty San Antonio Spurs. The Jazz got humiliated last night with everything on the line for home court.
So as a result, the Jazz slip to play Houston. I sincerely hope the Suns exact REVENGE for last year’s debacle and pummel the Spurs.
Go Suns!!!!
All things considered...
Utah’s almost impossible to beat at home, and they dispatched Houston last year with Yao Ming. They seem to be in good shape. Hell, I almost wonder if they just tossed last night’s game once Houston’s win was posted as final, knowing exactly what would happen with a loss.
Unlike.
That’s a fairly harsh comparison. I think the only political analogy to the Mets’ September 2007 would be Nixon’s 2nd presidency.
Still no Euro in Britain, though. How do our British friends feel about that? I know it had been discussed as one of Blair’s goals before he left 10 Downing St…

Can't see the Queen on a Euro Note for a while yet...
We’re by and large anti European as a country, I can’t see the Euro coming in for a while on those grounds but then again on an economic level the Euro is gaining alot of strength against the pound and we’re gradually losing industry because of higher costs over here so who knows. Either way It wont happen without a referendum and i can’t see the majority of this country voting for it.
Ouch
Must be missing something there, but then, news about the UK tends not to get much space in the Republic.

The who “will he-won’t he” tap-dance on the possibility of calling an early election was hilariously disastrous. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a politician go from colossus bestriding the world to witless hack faster… it was like ending your honeymoon with a trial separation. Who knows – there might even be a competitive election next time round.
Surprise of the season..

Certainly due for a bit of a fallback. Then again, they should be getting Chris Carpenter back in a couple months. If they’re still in contention in July, they might be able to stay there the rest of the season.
Didn’t carpenter have an injury to his shoulder? I seriously doubt he’ll return to the high level he pitched at before.
by C. Wesley Baier on Apr 17, 2008 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions
I thought he had Tommy John surgery on his elbow in May of last year. I’ve heard of a shoulder injury as well, though, so color me unsure.
Regardless, there’s always a question as to whether a player will recover from a major injury like that. Maybe he will, maybe he won’t, but it’s a free chance at significantly improving their rotation. I don’t see the combination of Wainwright-Looper-Lohse-Wellemeyer-Thompson continuing their current pace. And let’s not talk about Joel Pineiro.
The Central blows
It’s not that surprising considering they play the Reds 20 times, the Astros 20 times, the Pirates 20 times (or so). The Brewers have awful defense and mediocre pitching and the Cubs are, well, the Cubs.
They could very well win it.
The Reds, Brewers, and Cubs aren’t to be taken too lightly. The reason why the Cards are doing so well is that pitching has been pretty decent. They do have a pretty good middle of the order with Pujols, Ankiel, and Glaus. the rest of the lineup has been hitting very good. Once the pitching falls back to earth or the offense, they’ll be playing .500 ball
by C. Wesley Baier on Apr 17, 2008 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Glaus
Is barely above the Uecker Line … He’s not the threat he once was. It’s really starting pitching that is getting them through, with no ace.

I was going to mention the Cards as well.
11-4? Seriously?? Then again, they DO play in the NL Central…. if the Cardinals can keep this up, it’s gonna be “Bye bye, division title” for Piniella and the Cubbies.

Premiership Football etc
Well I’m biting my nails after Readings utter capitulation against Fulham last weekend. It now looks like 2 from 4 to join Derby in the Championship (the league below us) next year. At the top it seems like Man United have it all sown up though
Champions League looks thrilling though, Liverpool vs Chelsea round 3 and United vs Barcelona. I hate to say it but I can see Liverpool doing it again…they have this knack in Europe thats almost like Curt Schilling in the playoffs, on paper there’s no way he should keep doing it but heck he still does!
Liverpool is amazing
when it comes to European football – I’m not sure what it is, but they play at a whole other level during Champions League - and the atmosphere at Anfield has to be compared with the greatest in all of sports.
High probability of an all English final.
Adding to Houston's woes
Miguel Tejada is two years older than they thought. Maybe we should trade them Adriano Rosario as a replacement for Jose Valverde? :-)

I didn’t understand here, is why would a player “lie” to make it appear that he was younger? Maybe I’m missing the full story here.
But I am glad to see him coming completely clean on it, motives and all. That is refreshing indeed.

Basically, a given set of skills at age 23 is much less marketable – and much less signable – than the same set at age 21. Of course, once you’ve started the deception, you can’t really go back!

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
So I'm kinda starting to follow this hockey thing...
The Sharks are in the playoffs, and a bunch of my teammates are big fans, so I’ve started watching the post-season games. Tonight is Game 5 back at the Tank so I’m probably going to tune into that! It’s kinda interesting to watch… puzzling, but interesting..
Hockey has it’s moments. I followed Toronto for years. Since the strike, I haven’t bothered to follow too closely though

I used to follow the Sabres hardcore
and am slowly getting back into it (and I’ll check out the Coyotes next year and see where I stand) and it’s made me realize one painful thing.
If Boston is Titletown (as they recently proclaimed, though New York has a better claim to that) then Buffalo is the Anti-Titletown. Has there ever been a city has managed to do so poorly on the championship level as consistently as Buffalo? They’ve lost 4 Super Bowls and 3 Stanley Cups.

I’ll have to search the internets for information about it later.

Avs fan here.
I haven’t followed hockey as closely since the strike, but it used to be right up there with basketball and baseball for me. Personally, it’s bizarre for me seeing Forsberg and Foote back on the Avalanche. It’s like it’s 2001 all over again.
I know the feeling

Prince Fielder
Just hit his first homer of the season, as the Brewers beat the Cardinals in ten. Fielder only had one homer at this point of last year too, but it does seem the vegetarian lifestyle is not agreeing with his stats. Through the first fourteen games:
2007: .296/.391/.444
2008: .224/.350/.286
I think Brewers fans should gather outside his house and waft the smell of ftying bacon in to the AC…
The Prince

I was looking through the ESPN stats page, which I like because it has a lot more stats listed and more ways to split them up than Yahoo, and came across two interesting Sabermetric stats I’d never heard of before: Cheap Wins (starting pitchers that earned a win without throwing a quality start) and Tough Losses (starting pitchers who took a loss while throwing a quality start).
I wasn’t terribly surprised to see that Doug Davis was tied for the second in the majors in Cheap Wins last year- he only had two, but it seemed like it could have been more. I was surprised, though, to see Dan Haren tied for the lead in the majors in Tough Losses, with 8. Interesting. Haren threw 28 quality starts in his 34 starts last season- the exact same numbers as Jake Peavy put up.
Randy Johnson had 11 Tough Losses in 2004, which doesn’t surprise me at all.

Rockies and Padres scoreless going into the 7th...
With all the focus on their pitching, not many people have noticed that the Padres offense has been pretty uninspiring this season. Going into today’s game, they’re tied with the Giants for least runs scored in the majors, and they’re letting Jeff Francis (yeah, that Jeff Francis) match Jake Peavy so far tonight…
"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."
I just followed the game for ten minutes online before I realized “Oh, wait, I can watch this on TV.” Duh.
Rockies are threatening Peavy- they’ve got runners on first and second with one out. Francis is probably done for the night at 111 pitches, but I’d kind of like to see him get the W. At least more than Peavy.

Into the 11th
From what I can see, there were only three games last year where the final score was 1-0 in extra innings. Kinda hard to be sure though, it’s difficult to find a set of rules that return only those games over at baseball-reference.com…
I guess this also means
We do not have to face Peavy over the weekend. I am not unhappy to be missing the reigning Cy Young winner, needless to say.
We didn't face Lincecum or Cain,
we won’t face Peavy this series, we haven’t faced Jimenez yet, and according to the Giants fans at McCC, (I haven’t checked the schedule myself) we won’t face Lincecum or Cain THIS week, either. On top of it, Maddux is moving up his start to face us tomorrow, since Evil Chris Young is injured…. and we all know how well Maddux does at Chase. Plus, we’ll be facing a Padres squad that has been through at least a 14 inning game.
We’ve been EXTREMELY lucky with pitchers, so far.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
Oh, hold my aching sides
“T. Tulowitzki grounded into double play second to first, W. Taveras out at second”
Troyboy’s average is down to .140 now.
Tulowitzki looks bad at the plate. If I was a Rockies fan, I’d start worrying about his problems at the plate getting into his head and messing with his defense.
"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."
I do demand that Colorado wins this game, though. The Padres fans were doing the wave when I first turned the game on.

An eight-pitch 12th? You could at least try a little harder to tax the Padres ‘pen for us.

Padres just lost their leadoff man in the 13th, trying to stretch a double into a triple.
[Mops brow]
And on to the 14th
[rubs hands malevolently]
Let’s go, nobody… Let’s go nobody.
Assuming the winning team posts a shutout, we are now into the longest such game since July 20, 2004, when Oakland beat Toronto 1-0 in 14 innings.
First time posting
Been hanging around since the middle of last year, but this is my first time posting.
Just wanted to say Go Rockies. Well, at least, come on Padres and lose already.
Hopefully they are all very tired tomorrow and Haren just mows them all down.

There we go
A 27-pitch inning for the Rockies, so that’s another Padres reliever we won’t be seeing tomorrow night. ;-) And he walks in the go-ahead run, so we’ll see if Colorado can hang on.

“Most strikeouts in an extra-inning game occurred on July 9, 1971. In a 20-inning battle between California and Oakland, Angels batters fanned 26 times and A’s batters whiffed 17 times for a total of 43 strikeouts, also a major league record.”
I'm not REALLY going to have to start
another overflow thread for us, am I? :) Are the UKers going to come home from work and join us soon??
Oo...
and then we get a GIDP to end the inning. 22nd here we come

SD-COL
I wish we had a day game tomorrow :)
Yeah, I posted a little bit on here before the makeover. And I post as “FatLeprechaun” on DBBP.

This new system is slick. Infinitely better for a high volume of posts like gameday threads than DBBP.

Welcome!

Damnit. Hopefully SD can get 1 back and we can go 10 more innings.

People in the military do crazy stuff, stay up for days. Doctors have rounds of 24 hours, etc. Some people run 4 marathons in 2 days. Playing baseball all night isn’t that bad.

Question:
Obviously I can’t see the game, but could that error be attributed to Bard being behind the plate for 22 innings?
Uhh yeah :)
It was bounced into the dirt. And Greene’s throw was high even over TC, also probably attributing to the tiredness.

Well, we knew if they played long enough someone would make a mistake.
This is my last inning. I have to work early in the morning.
Same here
not the work part, but logging off after 22

That is funny
and Greene’s already at 1B after a HBP…

Nice. 50% of leadoff baserunners score :)

That's terrible.
One should never hit a lady.

Padres Bullpen
Judging by what we see today, they only have Hoffman, Kameron and Meredith left. A more patient approach tml?
by singaporedbacksfan on Apr 18, 2008 4:17 AM EDT reply actions
Kameron was in
Meredith is the only reliever left

Well, Bard didn't quite redeem himself.
I know you keep the other catcher for emergency (read: injury) situations, but that’s hell on Bard (and Torrealba).
Exactly what I was going to say
22 innings and a loss is a helluva lot worse than 22 and the win.

Still great news for the DBacks. 22 innings were far, far more than we could’ve reasonably hoped. Let’s see if their tired legs can hit Haren’s splitter tomorrow :)
By the way,
welcome to the ‘Pit, Philip from LA. I’m Philip from DC.
