Gameday Thread, #14: 4/15 vs.Giants

Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]
Okay, let's put last night's disaster behind us, and come out fighting strong, and show the Giants exactly why we are leading the National League. I think last night's defeat was more painful than Sunday's blowout; it's a game where even a moderate degree of competence would have been sufficient for victory. But we didn't even reach that level, and instead it was our third one-run defeat in four losses.
We send Pwnings up there to see what he can do, and his past couple of starts have been solid affairs. As we saw yesterday, however, a pitcher is largely at the mercy of the defense behind him. As Oscar Wilde once almost said, "To lose one game against the Giants, Mr Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose two looks like carelessness."

Numero uno.
Now…. if only I could make the next two hours pass more quickly….
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
Ah I do love
Afternoon starts :) Think I’ll avoid opening the thread with any more predictions from now on though :(
Likely missing most of this.
Tuesdays are the bane of my existence when it comes to being busy. Probably be able to sneak in a few times though. Hopefully it’s a case of good luck, not bad.
I'm switching off...
...between ordering an oscilloscope for work, reading about String Theory for class, and posting.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
Eh
At least the $12,000 it costs isn’t coming outta MY pocket.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
yesterday game was almost a perfect steal move on picking RJ on my fantasy =[
so here I am again, hoping for a quality start by Owings, who’s mine in other 2 leagues =/

Lineup
Young CF
Byrnes LF
Hudson 2B
Jackson 1B
Upton RF
Drew SS
Burke 3B
Snyder C
So no Sherif, hope its not related to the tumble yesterday
Gameday says it was 4 pitches.
Not that it really makes much difference.
"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."
That'll do
1-2-3 go the Giants too.
I like our lineup today, despite the lack of Reynolds. Sense anyone could hit it out, and should be a bit easier in a day game.
blame you Rowand for fouling off so many pitches =[

'Frisco sucks.
Really. Probably among my least favorite cities in the US that I’ve been to, in a large number of ways.

Nice job, Pwnings.

Dammit... I missed CoJack's AB.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
I missed it because
I went to get my radio.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
Upton's fly out lowered his BA to just .380 =[

If he stabilizes there....
....can we call him .380 Auto?

How good is this kid really?
I get why folks think Upton is going to be great…but seriously Willie Mays comparisons seem a bit much

Too early, but
The number of 20-year olds who were good enough to hold down a fulltime major league position is perilously short. In the last decade, think Ken Griffey Jr and A-Rod are the only ones who come to mind. The former is a common benchmark for what Upton might become.

All I know
is that Azreous said he watched the replay and he thinks it was gum.

Apparently...

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
Yeah, I love the option to watch replays.
Well, when they’re good plays by our guys.
"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."
Not that I know of, but they show good plays by the other teams.

Do they show people eating

No.
That’s exclusively CSN that gives you THOSE highlights.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
question for you Twinner
if the Suns, Rockets and Spurs all end up with same record (assuming Utah beats San Antonio) - Utah would slot #3 in playoffs --
how would the others stack up 4-5-6?
To the best of my knowledge (and my brain hurts from reading all the possibilities), Utah would be #3, Phx #4, Houston #5 and San Antonio #6. If they all have ended up with the same 55-27 record, Utah as a division winner would get #3, Phx #4 because they have a cumulative better record head-to-head over Utah/Houston/S.A. Utah’s cumulative record is 8-4, Phx is 6-5, Houston is 5-6 and S.A. is 4-8.
ugh
I’m not sure I like that… so the Jazz have to go on the road and beat the Spurs - for the right to play the Spurs. -- yet they have to win that game to get home court advantage—
the only consolation there would be if the Jazz could take out the Spurs in round one and exact some revenge for their series last year against the Suns
Get a load of this. It will make your eyes bleed, seriously.

Well
He didn’t have a very good game otherwise, either.

Me too.
I also hope he doesn’t end up sitting next to RJ on the bench.
THAT would be awkward….

RJ would open his mouth and catch Reynolds with his frogtongue...

C’mon, Peachy!! That’s like mentioning that it’s a no-hitter….
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

Shoulda said “perfect game”.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
ESPN Gamecast
Showed all 7 pitches from Owings to the last batter overlapping each other – all on the outside corner at the knees. Micah looks very good today
That, my friend,
is called “control”, or alternatively, “consistency”.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
I kind of like the Gamecast on ESPN where you can actually see a homer fly out of the park. Does Gameday do that?
Another 1-2-3
Owings looks like he’s doing pretty well today.

Argh… screw the Giants AND their crappy park, too.

- The Question is: Who cares!?
I’d be hard pressed to say Owings has pitched better than Webb.
"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."
Maybe
I just expect more from Webbie, but I was at the last game and while his splitter was diving all over, he had control problems. I don’t think Webb has been dominate yet. Owings has had two good outings and is DOMINANT today.
by Craig from Az on Apr 15, 2008 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Not quite.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
Wow, another strikeout for Micah. If he gets a win today (knock on wood), and if Lyon hadn’t blown that save for Haren, we could have had three 3-win pitchers.
And if my aunt had balls
She’d be my uncle.
I’m not to worried about the what might have beens. Maybe I will be in September, but for now I’m incredibly satisfied with all of our pitchers. In truth, we’ve thrown two poor games (Game 3 against Cinci, and Game 3 at home against Colorado). We’ve clearly got the stuff this year, and I’ll bet we see at least 2 of our pitchers at the All Star Game if they keep up like this.
Don't blink; blink and you're dead. Don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't blink. Good luck!
How many pitchers go to the All Star Game
It would be pretty sweet to see Santana, Webb, Peavy, Haren, and Owings, but that would probably be greedy.
Don't blink; blink and you're dead. Don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't blink. Good luck!
who would have guessed
that Micah would start the season like this….after watching him in Spring Training
I’m more convinced than ever that Spring Training results are absolutely meaningless…. thank goodness
I have to admit
his ST results concerned me quite a bit… especially once we found out Davis would be missing serious time.
Plus Snyder
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
If I were a player
Id use that time to experiment, and work stuff out, when the score doesn’t matter.
We will meet in Red 3 at the hour of scampering.
I would agree. Qualls had a rough night
Plus Slaten and Medders worked, and EdGon pitched a few days ago. Let him pitch 2 and then let the Petit unit go out for the 8th and 9th.
Don't blink; blink and you're dead. Don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't blink. Good luck!
Damn.
There goes the shutout.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
D'oh
Not too bad, though. Just get one more out, Owings.
"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."
I hate that play
Burke had the runner dead at home. These are professional baseball players. The throw home is no harder than the throw to first base. Nail the guy at the plate!!!
Not watching, of course,
but my first instinct was the same as yours—“why not try for home, Burke?”
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
in this case
with a 5-0 lead, if he was playing back – safe to get the out
But I also didn’t see the play
I didn’t want us to give them anything today after the debacle last night. They didn’t earn those 5 runs, we handed them to them.
And for a surprise entry...
soco, home early from work!
The boys in Sedona Red slugged it out with a pretty pesky poltergeist, then stayed on to dance the night away with some of the lovely ladies who witnessed the disturbance.
I thought about doing it now
but considering the game is over half over it wouldn’t work well. I’m just surprised I’m here as everyone else, though.
The boys in Sedona Red slugged it out with a pretty pesky poltergeist, then stayed on to dance the night away with some of the lovely ladies who witnessed the disturbance.
With Owings
Batting for himself may or may not mean he is out there in the seventh. He’s likely a better hitter than anyone we have on the bench…
is micah done?
pitch count at 96 thorugh 6. that shoudl be all i think. especially for a guy that has shown problems with endurance over times last year.
it is interesting with our BP getting worked hard. I guess i would stick with him

My friends that are Giants fans just say “remember 03, 04 and 05 for the Dbacks?” and it all makes sense
I don't really think ANYTHING good came out of '04....
....except the overhaul of the organization and Justin Upton as the #1 pick in ‘05.

True.
But I don’t see that happening in SF.

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
I totally disagree
Joe G. Jr made some really bad moves that proved that he was not a good GM and the organization made a huge shift towards what they are today. Almost our entire roster is from teh 03/04/05 years.
Lewis has actually been decent on offense
He’s not a great fielder, but he’s hit better than all the other kids on the roster (3 games of Bowker notwithstanding).

Yeah, he pretty much killed you.
That and Cliff Lee’s dominating eight innings. I was surprised to get a 5-4 win there.
Let's put Lyon in for the 9th
give him another oppty with cushion to gain confidence—even though non-save situation
There's the Giants we know and love.
Ball slips out of the left fielder’s hand when he tries to get it in.
Somehow Young isn’t on third base. He was pretty much trotting the whole way.
Moving him to second in the order
seems to help as he’s not pressing as much. He really probably never should have been been in the 3, 4, or 5 spots, but him being in the position to just get on is good.
The boys in Sedona Red slugged it out with a pretty pesky poltergeist, then stayed on to dance the night away with some of the lovely ladies who witnessed the disturbance.
Shouldn't have been in the #1 spot either.
Drew would have been a better choice last Sun.
Schulte, we looked almost worse last night with our defense, so I’d hold the criticism of the young Giant players.
CoJack!
He’s been pretty good these past couple of games.

Well then....
Let’s hope that the last 2 games were truly just speedbumps, and that this victory is a real sign that the Dbacks are back to kicking NL ass and taking names.
Heck…. if we keep playing like this, then the AL commentators may even quit referring to us as a AAAA team.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
Oh, it’s not like they’ll ever start respecting the National League, or most teams west of Kansas, or teams that were started in the past twenty years. And especially not teams that are both.
"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."
Oh, I didn't say anything about them respecting us.
I just said that maybe they’ll quit calling us a AAAA team.

So,
it would seem that our dastardly plan to let the Rockies and Padres beat each other up… is working!! 0-0 right now in the 4th, and Randy Wolf has no-hit the Rox so far. (Ubaldo Jimenez has given up 2 hits)
If the Dbacks can play anything close to how well they’ve played so far to start this season, then this year is going to be A LOT of fun.
