Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]

Okay, let's put last night's disaster behind us, and come out fighting strong, and show the Giants exactly why we are leading the National League. I think last night's defeat was more painful than Sunday's blowout; it's a game where even a moderate degree of competence would have been sufficient for victory. But we didn't even reach that level, and instead it was our third one-run defeat in four losses.

We send Pwnings up there to see what he can do, and his past couple of starts have been solid affairs. As we saw yesterday, however, a pitcher is largely at the mercy of the defense behind him. As Oscar Wilde once almost said, "To lose one game against the Giants, Mr Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose two looks like carelessness."

Ah I do love

Afternoon starts :) Think I’ll avoid opening the thread with any more predictions from now on though :(

Likely missing most of this.

Tuesdays are the bane of my existence when it comes to being busy. Probably be able to sneak in a few times though. Hopefully it’s a case of good luck, not bad.

well, I’m done with classes, so I’ll finally be able to watch through a game again.

I'm switching off...

Okay, gotta load the dishwasher, and then I’ll be back to follow the game. Here’s hoping the team gets bats and gloves that are working today.

yesterday game was almost a perfect steal move on picking RJ on my fantasy =[

so here I am again, hoping for a quality start by Owings, who’s mine in other 2 leagues =/

Hudson

So much for his streak, another 3 pitch K :(

by Wimb on Apr 15, 2008 4:40 PM EDT reply actions

Gameday says it was 4 pitches.

Not that it really makes much difference.

Hudson was swinging at the last three, but, yeah, the first pitch looked a bit wide.

That'll do

1-2-3 go the Giants too.

I like our lineup today, despite the lack of Reynolds. Sense anyone could hit it out, and should be a bit easier in a day game.

by hotclaws on Apr 15, 2008 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Too early, but

The number of 20-year olds who were good enough to hold down a fulltime major league position is perilously short. In the last decade, think Ken Griffey Jr and A-Rod are the only ones who come to mind. The former is a common benchmark for what Upton might become.

question for you Twinner

if the Suns, Rockets and Spurs all end up with same record (assuming Utah beats San Antonio) - Utah would slot #3 in playoffs --

how would the others stack up 4-5-6?

by dstorm on Apr 15, 2008 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

To the best of my knowledge (and my brain hurts from reading all the possibilities), Utah would be #3, Phx #4, Houston #5 and San Antonio #6. If they all have ended up with the same 55-27 record, Utah as a division winner would get #3, Phx #4 because they have a cumulative better record head-to-head over Utah/Houston/S.A. Utah’s cumulative record is 8-4, Phx is 6-5, Houston is 5-6 and S.A. is 4-8.

by TwinnerA on Apr 15, 2008 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

ugh

I’m not sure I like that… so the Jazz have to go on the road and beat the Spurs - for the right to play the Spurs. -- yet they have to win that game to get home court advantage—

the only consolation there would be if the Jazz could take out the Spurs in round one and exact some revenge for their series last year against the Suns

Maybe

I just expect more from Webbie, but I was at the last game and while his splitter was diving all over, he had control problems. I don’t think Webb has been dominate yet. Owings has had two good outings and is DOMINANT today.

And if my aunt had balls

She’d be my uncle.

I’m not to worried about the what might have beens. Maybe I will be in September, but for now I’m incredibly satisfied with all of our pitchers. In truth, we’ve thrown two poor games (Game 3 against Cinci, and Game 3 at home against Colorado). We’ve clearly got the stuff this year, and I’ll bet we see at least 2 of our pitchers at the All Star Game if they keep up like this.

Don't blink; blink and you're dead. Don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't blink. Good luck!

Yeah, he pretty much killed you.

That and Cliff Lee’s dominating eight innings. I was surprised to get a 5-4 win there.

by Azreous on Apr 15, 2008 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Qualls = rock solid.

It’s almost like last night never happened.

by Azreous on Apr 15, 2008 7:03 PM EDT reply actions

Let's put Lyon in for the 9th

give him another oppty with cushion to gain confidence—even though non-save situation

by dstorm on Apr 15, 2008 7:05 PM EDT reply actions

We got him in the Valverde trade from Houston.

There's the Giants we know and love.

Ball slips out of the left fielder’s hand when he tries to get it in.

Somehow Young isn’t on third base. He was pretty much trotting the whole way.

by Azreous on Apr 15, 2008 7:08 PM EDT reply actions

Byrnsie not hacking?

We will meet in Red 3 at the hour of scampering.

by hotclaws on Apr 15, 2008 7:13 PM EDT reply actions

He’s been better the past, oh, week or so.

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

by kishi on Apr 15, 2008 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Moving him to second in the order

seems to help as he’s not pressing as much. He really probably never should have been been in the 3, 4, or 5 spots, but him being in the position to just get on is good.

The boys in Sedona Red slugged it out with a pretty pesky poltergeist, then stayed on to dance the night away with some of the lovely ladies who witnessed the disturbance.

by soco on Apr 15, 2008 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Shouldn't have been in the #1 spot either.

Drew would have been a better choice last Sun.

by nargel on Apr 16, 2008 3:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Schulte, we looked almost worse last night with our defense, so I’d hold the criticism of the young Giant players.

by TwinnerA on Apr 15, 2008 7:14 PM EDT reply actions

no problem with it

as long as he let our guys have it yesterday….

by dstorm on Apr 15, 2008 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Another ribbie for CoJack.

Double down the line, just off Castillo’s glove.

by Azreous on Apr 15, 2008 7:15 PM EDT reply actions

CoJack!

He’s been pretty good these past couple of games.

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

by kishi on Apr 15, 2008 7:16 PM EDT reply actions

Good Morning everyone!

Left home when it was 5-0, great to see that the lead has been extended to 6 runs in the 9th just as I reach school.

A win here would be great for wiping off any bitter aftertaste from yesterday.

by singaporedbacksfan on Apr 15, 2008 7:20 PM EDT reply actions

That DOES make it a good morning, doesn't it??

I am looking for a nice tidy inning for Lyon. And that’s not it.

by TwinnerA on Apr 15, 2008 7:20 PM EDT reply actions

Lyon in.

Throws a looooooping curve ball that Molina slaps to right.

by Azreous on Apr 15, 2008 7:20 PM EDT reply actions

I apologize

for jinxing J-Up with my previous no strike outs comment

by dstorm on Apr 15, 2008 7:21 PM EDT reply actions

Not a bad pitch there.

Fastball in on the hands, but it’s fought off into left for another soft single.

by Azreous on Apr 15, 2008 7:21 PM EDT reply actions

Come on, Lyon...

Get some outs!

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

Injury?

Gameday says there’s an injury delay. What’s going on?

by 4 Corners Fan on Apr 15, 2008 7:25 PM EDT reply actions

Fouled it off his foot.

Really, more like the ankle. He went down in a heap. Looks to be okay though.

Thanks.

I’m stuck here in Marinerland, being forced to watch Richie Sexon.

What’s with Lyon? I thought the strike zone was huge today. Maybe it shrunk to nothing now.

by TwinnerA on Apr 15, 2008 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

On the AM radio,

Schulte definitely seemed to think the K zone had gotten smaller…

by DbacksSkins on Apr 15, 2008 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Seemed like it on Gameday, though that’s not always a definite sign.

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

by kishi on Apr 15, 2008 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

If both Schulte AND Gameday agreed, there’s a pretty good chance that it DID get smaller.

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

Ugh

10 pitches and he walks? Yikes.

Snyder, smack him up side of the head and tell him to throw a gall darn strike!

by TwinnerA on Apr 15, 2008 7:30 PM EDT reply actions

How old?

I remember Calgon commercials, so I guess I am flat ancient.

One more out, Brandon!

by peachy rex on Apr 15, 2008 7:32 PM EDT reply actions

anyone remember when we walked Bonds

intentionally with the bases loaded and gave up a run?

by dstorm on Apr 15, 2008 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

3rd out, game over. Owings goes to 3-0!

Much needed win

Great start Owings – you’re the Man!

Feeling good going for series win tomorrow with B Webb

by dstorm on Apr 15, 2008 7:35 PM EDT reply actions

Game!

A little bit too exciting in the end, but a win’s a win. So much for building Lyon’s confidence though.

by hotclaws on Apr 15, 2008 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

Man.

That Micah guy…he’s pretty okay to have in the #5 spot once Davis comes back.

Ridiculous depth in this rotation when healthy.

by Azreous on Apr 15, 2008 7:38 PM EDT reply actions

If RJ is healthy

DD is #5. Owings is already better than DD. If RJ is unhealthy, Owings is #3.

by Craig from Az on Apr 15, 2008 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

and there is another arm in AAA

Big Max is looking solid in AAA. I think he will hit some valleys at some point but looks great so far.

by peeklay on Apr 15, 2008 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes,

but is he going to stay a starter, or become our closer of the future?

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

by DbacksSkins on Apr 15, 2008 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Well then....

Let’s hope that the last 2 games were truly just speedbumps, and that this victory is a real sign that the Dbacks are back to kicking NL ass and taking names.

Heck…. if we keep playing like this, then the AL commentators may even quit referring to us as a AAAA team.

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

by DbacksSkins on Apr 15, 2008 10:04 PM EDT reply actions

Oh, it’s not like they’ll ever start respecting the National League, or most teams west of Kansas, or teams that were started in the past twenty years. And especially not teams that are both.

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

by kishi on Apr 15, 2008 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Err… All three. I wrote that, and then went back to add the Kansas thing.

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

by kishi on Apr 15, 2008 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, I didn't say anything about them respecting us.

I just said that maybe they’ll quit calling us a AAAA team.

"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."

by DbacksSkins on Apr 15, 2008 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point.

"It's such a fine line between stupid and clever."

by kishi on Apr 15, 2008 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

So,

it would seem that our dastardly plan to let the Rockies and Padres beat each other up… is working!! 0-0 right now in the 4th, and Randy Wolf has no-hit the Rox so far. (Ubaldo Jimenez has given up 2 hits)

If the Dbacks can play anything close to how well they’ve played so far to start this season, then this year is going to be A LOT of fun.
