Baseball-Reference.com preview [opens in new window]

Okay, let's put last night's disaster behind us, and come out fighting strong, and show the Giants exactly why we are leading the National League. I think last night's defeat was more painful than Sunday's blowout; it's a game where even a moderate degree of competence would have been sufficient for victory. But we didn't even reach that level, and instead it was our third one-run defeat in four losses.

We send Pwnings up there to see what he can do, and his past couple of starts have been solid affairs. As we saw yesterday, however, a pitcher is largely at the mercy of the defense behind him. As Oscar Wilde once almost said, "To lose one game against the Giants, Mr Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose two looks like carelessness."

Ah I do love

Afternoon starts :) Think I’ll avoid opening the thread with any more predictions from now on though :(

Likely missing most of this.

Tuesdays are the bane of my existence when it comes to being busy. Probably be able to sneak in a few times though. Hopefully it’s a case of good luck, not bad.

well, I’m done with classes, so I’ll finally be able to watch through a game again.

I'm switching off...

...between ordering an oscilloscope for work, reading about String Theory for class, and posting.

Okay, gotta load the dishwasher, and then I’ll be back to follow the game. Here’s hoping the team gets bats and gloves that are working today.

yesterday game was almost a perfect steal move on picking RJ on my fantasy =[

so here I am again, hoping for a quality start by Owings, who’s mine in other 2 leagues =/

I like our lineup today, despite the lack of Reynolds. Sense anyone could hit it out, and should be a bit easier in a day game.

by hotclaws on Apr 15, 2008 4:59 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Too early, but

The number of 20-year olds who were good enough to hold down a fulltime major league position is perilously short. In the last decade, think Ken Griffey Jr and A-Rod are the only ones who come to mind. The former is a common benchmark for what Upton might become.

by Jim McLennan on Apr 15, 2008 5:03 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I heard that on Gambo and Ash

yesterday in fact - comparisons w/ Jr that is

Griffey in his age 20 year:
.300/.366/.481, 20 HR, 80 RBI

question for you Twinner

if the Suns, Rockets and Spurs all end up with same record (assuming Utah beats San Antonio) - Utah would slot #3 in playoffs --

how would the others stack up 4-5-6?

by dstorm on Apr 15, 2008 5:01 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

To the best of my knowledge (and my brain hurts from reading all the possibilities), Utah would be #3, Phx #4, Houston #5 and San Antonio #6. If they all have ended up with the same 55-27 record, Utah as a division winner would get #3, Phx #4 because they have a cumulative better record head-to-head over Utah/Houston/S.A. Utah’s cumulative record is 8-4, Phx is 6-5, Houston is 5-6 and S.A. is 4-8.

by TwinnerA on Apr 15, 2008 5:06 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ugh

I’m not sure I like that… so the Jazz have to go on the road and beat the Spurs - for the right to play the Spurs. -- yet they have to win that game to get home court advantage—

the only consolation there would be if the Jazz could take out the Spurs in round one and exact some revenge for their series last year against the Suns

Must be nice seeing a baseball game right there on the ocean. That’s another park I’d like to visit sometime.

Still, the park sucks. Too pitcher-friendly.

Maybe

I just expect more from Webbie, but I was at the last game and while his splitter was diving all over, he had control problems. I don’t think Webb has been dominate yet. Owings has had two good outings and is DOMINANT today.

Wow, another strikeout for Micah. If he gets a win today (knock on wood), and if Lyon hadn’t blown that save for Haren, we could have had three 3-win pitchers.

by TwinnerA on Apr 15, 2008 5:55 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And if my aunt had balls

She’d be my uncle.

I’m not to worried about the what might have beens. Maybe I will be in September, but for now I’m incredibly satisfied with all of our pitchers. In truth, we’ve thrown two poor games (Game 3 against Cinci, and Game 3 at home against Colorado). We’ve clearly got the stuff this year, and I’ll bet we see at least 2 of our pitchers at the All Star Game if they keep up like this.

Don't blink; blink and you're dead. Don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't blink. Good luck!

Well, I like 6-2 a whole lot more than 5-4,

but 6-0 would have been even better.

I hate it when they give up late runs. Micah goes 6 and gives up 1 and then Pena comes in and gives up 1 before getting an out.

Only one run

Not a disaster, then.

A triple to the second baseman? Oh, I’d like to see the video on that…

O-dawg wanders far afield too… of course, he actually makes the outs.

Yeah, I was thinking when he did it last week or so, but O-Dawg would have at least made a move like he was going to catch the ball.

When you can double switch, you must double switch.

It’s a NL bylaw.

If you like things that are funny, perhaps you will enjoy ChatterBalks Dot Com?

No, I didn’t mean why was he on the field, I meant why was he trying to run out and catch a pop-up along the foul line in right field.

Atta boy Drew.

Again, I seem to turn the TV on right as the Diamondbacks score.

I need to be doing this more often.

Reynolds Update

From Schulte:

Back a little sore, shin a little sore, gets the day off

ya think ?

I’m thinking the average Joe diving 10 feet into a cement stairwell should at least get 1 day off…..

Perhaps Reynolds new nickname should be Iron Man.

Don't blink; blink and you're dead. Don't turn your back, don't look away, and don't blink. Good luck!
