Biting the jersey bullet...

So as we all know, it's the 10th anniversary year for our beloved D'backs, and I've decided at some point in the season to pick up a jersey with a 10th year patch.

The problem with jerseys is that they're really expensive.  Not, "damn, gas is a lot but I need it" expensive, but a "wow, how often am I going to wear this thing" expensive.

Jerseys are funny thing, and they hold all kinds of unspoken rules and everyone has their own views on the subject.  Personally, I think jerseys generally don't work outside of an event where you're watching the game either live or at a bar, or where ever.

Which brings me to the point of this whole diary.  If I'm going to be spending $200+ on an authentic jersey with patches, who do I get that I won't immediately regret?  You don't want to get someone who immediately leaves, because then you can't wear that jersey for a few years.  You don't want to go with a guy who will later embarrass the franchise, though that's hard to predict.  I don't want my name on it, because that's almost always a little lame.

I'm thinking I'm just going to go with Snyder or Reynolds, since those are my two favorites, but I guess we'll see how the season goes.

Um, so I'm just going to post the link to the jersey rules again.  Which rules would you add or take away?  Any you think are ridiculous, or what terrible jersey experiences do you have?

Those are "his" rules
make your own.  I will agree on the number 69 thing or anything else trying to be "cute" and making sure  the players who's jersey your buying really did wear that style (though for us celebrating 10 years, i doubt this will be an issue anytime soon)
As far as having your last name on the jersey, go for it.  At least you know you'll (or your family) will be around in 5 years still cheering on the DBacks.  With players, loyalty is with the checkbook, not with the fans.  My jerseys are not the 200.00 dollar version, but the replica jerseys they sell at the team shop right next to the more expensive ones.  Mine do not have any name or number on them other than the name of the team.

The replicas look weird to me
and I want the 10th anniversary patch, simply because I doubt I'll be buying another jersey for quite awhile.

I'm bit at a crossroads in regards to having your own name, because on one hand you don't have to worry about yourself leaving for another team.  Another advantage is you don't look like you're pretending to be someone else.  Conversely, well, I dunno.  I don't have a specific reason for not liking it, I just generally don't.

Then comes the problem of figuring out which jersey to get.  Since it's not like I want to have a wardrobe of jerseys I probably should just get the home, but the black does look pretty spiffy.

Do you just have D'backs jerseys, or anything for anyone else (regardless of sport)?

Stay grindy, my friends.

Jim, Please close your eyes
I have a authentic road jersey for the Glasgow Celtic Football Club.
There is a world of difference between a Football (soccer) jersey and a baseball one.  The Celtic Jersey says "Carling" across the chest and the team logo/patch is on the front upper left of the jersey.

I follow the beautiful game
so I know ;-)  They also have different sleeve patches for different competitions which I always thought was pretty cool.  Needless to say I'm a sucker for little details like patches.  To quote the Dude, "it really brings [the jersey] together."
Stay grindy, my friends.

Ahhh, gotcha!
and I complain about the prices over here.   With the almighty dollar sinking fast and the fact it cost me at the VERY least, $35 dollars for shipping, I don't order much from the Celtic site....

A number of soccer shirts
They used to be my holiday souvenir of choice, so I have a Hamburg St. Pauli shirt from a trip there. [The team are something of a counter-culture phenomenon in Europe]. I also have a Ferencvaros shirt from a trip to Budapest, as well as a Japanese one from the Nagoya Grampus Eight. That wasn't a holiday shirt, I picked it up for ten quid in London. Not quite sure why the store was selling those, I must say. Also got Inter Milan and Newcastle United shirts, which Chris bought me.

Got four hockey shirts too; a Montreal Canadiens one [another souvenir], a Coyotes one, a Phoenix Mustangs one [the old minor-league team that used to play at the Vet] and one for the Charlestown Chiefs. The last-named probably gets more comments than any other shirt I own; if you don't know why, Google is your friend. :-)

Oh, and black shirts = death in an Arizona summer. You're on your own with those!

Talk about breaking the rules
When I was in Taiwan, we had a softball team where EVERY GUY ON THE TEAM wore the same number below their name....69 !!  It was a joke of course. We had a new sponsor and were getting new jerseys,  and a couple of dorks were  "fighting" over getting to use that number  while at the bar during the offseason team meeting, so somehow in a drunken stupor the motion for everyone to have the same number managed to pass.

I once thought I might get a "Byrnes" Jersey, but instead of the number 22, have the Letters "GM" stitched in the numbers area.

Personally....I don't really like to wear them. They are too hot to wear during the summer, even indoors with the A/C on...I prefer just to wear a T Shirt or Polo Shirt at the games. I was given a Jersey for Christmas last year, but always felt too hot and sweaty when I wore it to games, except for the playoffs in October at night when it was cooler. But maybe the better quality 200 versions are coolor.....I don't know. I never bought one. Hats are my thing.

Where to start?
We have an entire closet full of Diamondback clothing which will never see the light of day again. The Matt Williams shirt? Tainted by performance-enhancing drugs. The Gonzo one? That'd be like wearing your ex-girlfriend's shirt. What about the matching Kim shirts bought by myself and Mrs. SnakePit, a month before he was traded to Boston? Stop sniggering at the back. Basically, the entire purple section is off-limits, a) because we don't want to be identified with the AZPhan mentality, and b) it makes me look like Barney the Dinosaur. Or, worse yet, a Rockies fan. :-)

To be honest, I don't think it's worth paying out the full $200 for an utterly authentic one. About the only difference I can see is the sleeve patches, and even a hardcore fan like myself is hardly going to start pointing and laughing at you because your jersey doesn't have those. This isn't Fenway or Wrigley, y'know. We went with the cheaper, patchless versions, and spent the difference on getting them personalized. I somewhat agree that putting your name on the back of the shirt is a bit egocentric. However, putting the name of, oh, say your favorite blog on the back, is something I'd encourage everyone to do. :-) [Even if it poses Dawn at the Team Shop a mighty challenge...] You can still pick a number, and that allows you to combine your support for a particular player, with the knowledge that AZ Snakepit will not be traded to another team, or go into a slump that gets us sent down to cover the Sidewinders.

However, if you are going to pick a player, you should think long-term. A jersey can easily last you five years or more, so picking someone who will be a free agent after this season, is not the best choice [Paging Mrs. SnakePit, since she is still wondering who, if anyone, is gonna pick up Hernandez 2.0's #61, which she got last year, in a fit of misguided loyalty towards a fellow Cuban]. On that basis, I'd be inclined to go for one of the young guys: Reynolds [whom we have on our books for five more years before he hits free agency], rather than Snyder [who is already into his arbitration years]. However, this will always be a gamble, as there's no such player as a sure-thing in baseball - as the large box of Carlos Quentin bobbleheads proved at the D-backs Yard Sale last weekend...

I think the concept of "rules" is a little silly. Obviously, you should take into account what people will think of you [that Callaspo jersey is unlikely to be a chick magnet, shall we say], but the most important thing is will you want to wear it? On that basis, a position player is probably a safer bet than a pitcher: batters fail 7/10ths of the time anyway, so it's rare for a hitter to receive the blame for a team loss. However, if you're going to put the closer's name on your back, think what it'll feel like when you walk out of Chase after he's blown a save, and 35,000 people want to lynch him.

That said, I'm perfectly happy to have Webb's #17 on my back, and you couldn't go wrong with Johnson either, simply because of the 2001 World Series. Mind you, my selection of Webb was in part mandated by a poll on the site, though it would have been my first choice too. In the end, go with what your heart tells you; that way, at the very worst, you'll end up with a nice story.

by Jim McLennan on Feb 17, 2008 1:52 PM EST reply actions

My opinion......
I'd go with a Randy Johnson one, that's what I did last year knowing that he'd be retiring with us. Therefore I can wear it forever because when he retires it becomes a throwback of a HoF.

I'm not a big fan of the own name of the jersey. You don't play for the team don't act like you do. I just find it annoying. I get offended when people ask me if it's my last name on the back of the jersey or an actual player. In my scenario it is both, but not because it was my last name. Personally the personal name on the back is annoying. Sorry to upset or offend anyone, but I view it as a bit of douchebaggery.

Tippecanoe and Pena too! (let's hope pena doesn't die after 30 days in office)

On the annoyingly cute front...
my fiance and I were joking that when we have kid's we'll get jerseys for everyone with our last name, and have everyone have a number sequentially.
Stay grindy, my friends.

You might consider ...
a jersey without a name and number on it. Blank ones are never traded away.

by foulpole on Feb 19, 2008 9:01 PM EST reply actions

I'm actually
after a bit of thought, get one without a name, and just a number.  I always liked that about Yankees uniforms; they're timeless.
Stay grindy, my friends.

Im not against
Wearing a Jersey with a name and number player who has been traded away or left as a free agent, it shows longevity as a fan...

by Shippee33 on Feb 22, 2008 10:17 PM EST reply actions

That's definately true
but some players aren't the best choice right away.  Right now, having "Kim" on your back would be a faux pas, in my opinion, but in 10 years it'll be awesome.
Stay grindy, my friends.

by soco on Feb 23, 2008 2:05 AM EST up reply actions

There's definitely a time-out involved
Once a player has left, his jersey needs to go back in the closet for some time. Otherwise people will snicker at you and go, "Don't you know he's been traded?" How long that moratorium is, depends on a range of factors; how popular the player was, the terms on which he left, etc. It's likely our Kim shirts won't see the light of day for some time, but ten years seems a bit harsh! Personally, I'll be bringing them out for our games in the 2011 World Series. Hopefully against the Yankees. :-)

flashes in the pan
I think one's best bet is to go for someone who was a long-time guy for the team, whether a star or just a more obscure role player (RJ, Webb, Finley, Delucci, Colbrunn, Counsell, Batista, Womack) over guys who either are not primarily associated with the team (Schilling, Williams, Grace) or were flashes in the pan (Lee, Bautista, Mantei, Durazo).
