Election Day Game Thread
Figured we might as well have a Gameday-Thread style entry for this night; I'm at the wrestling, but will likely be about for most of the night. Comments, news and thoughts to follow as and when, so feel free to pop in and join me.

Europa
has a lively debate forum going. It is all about the EU though, by europeans, and for europeans. I never realized just how much europe has come to …….. strongly dislike the usa. And they spread the dislike around to all of us in general instead of just the govenment.
“Democracy. Use it or lose it.”
Jim, we’ve already lost it, years ago. But, nobody wants to hear that. They’d rather go around with head stuck in the sand, pretending everything is all right.

And when you do vote, you can either get <a href=“http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/02/starbucks-offers-free-cof_n_140087.html”free coffee from Starbucks, or free ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s. I know which one I’m going for.
Well, I mean, you could get both, too.

Why not both? :-)
Perhaps because it may be a felony?
Businesses that hope to reward voters today for exercising their patriotic right might be committing a felony… In Georgia, the secretary of state’s office issued a statement yesterday reading: “Businesses are free to offer ‘Election Day’ specials or sales for all of its customers, but gifts, incentives or specials just for voters is prohibited under this provision.”
Ben & Jerry’s said it would give away a free scoop of ice cream from 5 to 8 p.m. today to customers displaying the sticker, but then learned about the law. “Originally, we planned to give free scoops away just to those who voted,” said Walt Freese, chief euphoria officer of the wacky Vermont ice cream maker. “We found out afterwards that certain laws may not allow it. So instead we’re celebrating our election with a national party,” he said. At Starbucks, which promised a free “tall” coffee today to anyone displaying the “I Voted” sticker, free joe now flows for all, voter and non-voter alike. .
Chief euphoria officer? How do you get that job?

Well
From my reading of the article, it may only be a felony to offer said rewards, not to receive them… =)

I'm not all that enthusiastic about it
The two main characters are the least interesting. And their depiction of a character described as a viking looks more like the bassist for a metal band that practices in someone’s garage. But mrskishi’s a fan of the books, so it’s on our Sunday night queue after Dexter.

Continues to kick ass. I’m reading the original book, on which the show was based: it’s kinda similar to the first series, but he’s a lot colder and more distant.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend True Blood. It’s in that “Eh, there’s nothing else to watch right now” slot that’s also filled by Heroes at the moment. There’s better stuff out there.

Random obscurist race I'm interested in
Alaskan senate. Governor Ted Stevens – best know for his ‘series of tubes’ depiction of the Internet, is trying to shrug off the little matter of, oh, federal corruption convictions. We’re mostly interested, because the Democrat candidate is Mark Begich, whose brother, Nick, is one ot the more impressive [that’d be not a loony] researcher into covert technology out there. He specializes in HAARP, the odd DARPA high-energy project that’s going on up in Alaska. So it’d be kinda cool to see his brother in the Senate – unless the same things happens as to their father, a Congressman who vanished entirely, along with his plane, back in 1972…

I’m not expecting Obama to carry it. But it just seems odd to me.
Perhaps a better question would be something like Maryland, where they’re giving it to Obama, with 4% of districts reporting, and Obama holding a 50% to 49% lead.

Obama
was up by 30,000 (albeit very early) in Utah at one point, and they were awarding it to McCain.
It’s kind of a tangent, but this projection system seems extremely stupid to me. In most cases, it isn’t based on the returns or the exit polls whatsoever; instead, it basically lines up with what the media has been predicting for the couple weeks heading into election day. I’d much rather see the states light up in a color the minute a candidate has clinched a state, when it’s absolutely certain.
But that could just be me.
Still, you’d think CNN and other outlets would have learned a lesson from eight years ago.

Arizona law bans gay marriage. As far as I know, California law banned gay marriage until it was overturned as unconstitutional. But if they change the constitution, then it can’t be overturned by judicial review.

Considering how
half of ‘traditional’ marriages end up in divorce, I found the pro side of this argument a tad hyopcritical…. But I can agree with your thoughts.
Prop 200 _ gotta go down to defeat. It is not reform, it is legal loan sharking.
Anyone have word on Saban yet? (fingers crossed!)

It was the deceitful way it was done that annoyed the hell out of me. Making it seem as it was reform, when in fact, it was very, very pro-industry.

Disturbing data fragment
The Democratic nominee did not win white voters, the exit polls suggest. The voting block – which made up three in four total voters – broke for McCain 54 percent to 44 percent. But black voters, who made up 13 percent of voters, voted overwhelmingly for Obama, 96 percent to 3 percent.

Seriously?
LiveJournal? How gauche.
Seriously, though. What’s the point of complaining about the Queen of England? First off, it’s a hereditary position, as most monarchies are, and it’s- as I understand it- pretty much ceremonial right now, right? It’s like complaining that the Diamondbacks are a racist organization because they’ve never pulled a kid out of a Korean orphanage to deliver the lineup card to the umpire before games.

Nice response to halosheaven
I endorse much of what you said, squandering opportunity post 9/11,etc.
America no more deserves praise for his becoming president, than an idiot does when he stops banging his head against a brick wall.
Your point about most of the white vote defaulting to McCain (and black vote to Obama) is valid, in the sense this is still very much a divided electorate – divided by ideology, income, race , etc. But I also think ‘America’ deserves some credit tonight.
A partisan view tempts one to assume the economic climate and comparative quality of the two campaigns made this a “no-brainer”, but dispassionate analysis requires one to also acknowledge that voters chose a black man – with an Arabic sounding name and startlingly thin Presidential resume – over a well regarded, bipartisan Senate fixture, who’s also a war hero (in a time of war).
It’s often said we dont conduct one election, but fifty little ones. More accurately, we execute a hundred million elections, inside a hundred million hearts. Tonight, our collective jumble of rational and irrational considerations led to individual quantitative shifts sufficient to herald a qualitative change, unprecedented in modern political history.
What makes Obama’s victory more impressive to me than Thatcher’s or Merkel’s, isnt so much that he’s black. It’s that he’s liberal. His ideology is fairly consistent with previous black candidates with limited national appeal, and stokes doubts within the demographic (right, far right) more predisposed to discount him on the basis of race. By contrast, Thatcher and Merkel assuaged doubts about their “weak gender” with platforms that put that traditional demographic more at ease. One might have to go as far back as Golda Meir to find a PM on the left in the industrialized West, who wasnt also a white male.
I’d long assumed our first black (and woman) Presidents would both be right of center, even if there was a dearth of visible candidates. I was wrong. Circumstances combined with a remarkably disciplined and capable candidate to create improbable history tonight. One of those ‘circumstances’ was the American electorate, enough of whom entrusted our shared future with someone who didnt seem to share a whole lot with many of us – at least not on the outside.
I agree with you it’s only the start of repairing our country and it’s place in the world, but it’s a history making start. Not just for America, but by America. And for the world.

Interesting results.
Not all the precincts are in yet, obviously, but it’s interesting to me that Obama could win the electoral vote by more than a two-to-one margin while scrapping out a 2 percent victory in the popular vote. This system is just ridiculous.
