Playoffs 2008: NLCS - Dodgers/Phillies
With half of the teams now out of the post-season and only the Championship Series to play until the World Series, my thoughts are to keep one thread open per series. Depending on the activity level, we will adjust how future gameday threads are opened and handled. We hope that, with increased interest in the Championship Series' results, that these threads will continue to draw knowledgeable and well-meaning baseball fans from all over. Note, however, that these open threads are not to be misconstrued as a place where visiting fans can gloat about their teams' successes; please take excessive celebratory remarks home.
Game 5: 10/15, 5:22pm AZT, FOX
Phillies Lead 3-1
|
|
Well, what can be said about this one? Certainly I should be able to think of something better than Chad Billingsley, who said: “It’s pretty much do or die.” Really? Pretty much? How is it not do or die in this situation?? Anyway, I don't have much to say today. The Dodgers put their hopes on Billingsley's shoulders, who had a terrible Game 2 start, giving up 8 runs in less than 3 innings. Cole Hamels goes tonight on regular rest, and he has looked great this post-season.
Joe Torre cancelled practice yesterday to give the Dodgers a mental break, while Charlie Manuel wanted to keep his team loose and flowing. Can the Dodger bullpen recover? Can the Phillies offense get the support they need from Hamels? The Phillies have history on their side - 9 of 11 teams to be up 3-0 in an LCS have gone on to win the series. (Boston in '04 and '07 being the exceptions.)
Game 5, here we come!!

Come on, Phillies
Seems to me like the media has been pretty quick to transfer their adulation from the Cubs to the Dodgers.
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
by kishi on Oct 9, 2008 8:19 PM EDT 0 recs
Very much so! They seem to be completely in love with them.
In other news, Jeannie Zelasko said during the pre-game, “Well, it’s down to two, at least in the National League.” Seriously? How many are still left in the AL?
And also, she said, “We’ve had enough of Mark Grace for now” and then went to that baseball-lovin’ fool, Joe Buck. Enough of Mark Grace? I don’t think so. And also, how rude.

Strange.
No posts from Wildcats after the Dodgers were no longer leading.
That is in no way familiar.

He was obviously busy on the phone
Giving Torre advice on how to come back in the game. Too bad Joe didn’t listen, I’m sure.

Not bad
We got to dinner at the middle of the sixth, and mrskishi had been kind enough to pick a restaurant showing the game- or I was lucky enough, whichever. Glad I caught the important bits.

Missed most of the game
Turned it off after LA’s second run, to watch Kevin Bacon go all vigilante in Death Sentence. Kinda wished I’d seen it now, of course, but I’m still happy with the result.

Nice line
The Phillies have been great since Manny was traded to the Dodgers
Hard to imagine many dbacks fans rooting for LA. Now that they’re finally winning a few games, the Dodgers are anathema again – surly Jeff Kent, squirrelly money spent, Ned Coletti, young players who are ready, wont run Shawn Green, frontrunner celebrity scene, smog-wise, blog-wise, Mann-wise, fan-wise….we “loathe” LA :-)

Hey, look!
We’re having a four-day weekend, so are catching up on movies and slothing – already seen The Bourne Ultimatum. So it’s looking pretty good for me to be about and enjoying this one, along I think with a Krispy Kreme donut. Or twelve. :-)
Go, Phillies.
And, yeah, Bookman’s rules. :-)

Same as last night
Dodgers strike first. But after having second and third with no outs, they are probably disappointed not to come away with more than a single run.

BEAT. EL. AY... BEAT. EL. AY...
Great inning for the Phillies. Didn’t look like much, after the first two batters K’d, but they then got five straight hits – including one by the pitcher. Howard then K’d to end it, so I guess Billingsley struck out the side: albeit around four runs by the opposition. Can’t be often that happens.
Howard, it appears, is completely incapable of hitting the curve-ball. Billingsley has thrown eight pitches to him, all breaking pitches, striking him out twice, and Howard hasn’t even been able to foul one off. File that one away for the next time we face the Phillies.
by Jim McLennan on Oct 10, 2008 5:29 PM EDT 0 recs
Scary inning.
Myers strikes out DeWitt to leave the bases loaded though. Only one run scored.
4-2.
by Azreous on Oct 10, 2008 5:43 PM EDT 0 recs
Myers does it again
2-for-2 with three RBI today. Half as many hits this game, as he had in the entire regular season. Billingsley is gone, and the Phillies get that run back, and another one.
What, no AZWILDCATS?
by Jim McLennan on Oct 10, 2008 5:53 PM EDT 0 recs
There's a surprise.
However, you are no longer allowed to post here during the playoffs. If you don’t show up when your team loses the first game, and is getting hammered in the second, then you are not welcome when they threaten to come back.
Any further posts here this post-season will result in your immediate, irrevocable banning as a troll. This is not arguable or up for debate.

You know your offense is having a good day
When your clean-up batter gets to hit with two outs in the first, second and third innings. :-)
Phillies load the bases again, and Joe Torre inserts his fourth pitcher of the game already. Anyone know if Manny has a good curveball?
by Jim McLennan on Oct 10, 2008 6:10 PM EDT 0 recs
Myers gets the third out with a K
But it’s a wild pitch, so Furcal reaches. Martin hits and Ramirez homers, to make it 8-5 in the top of the fourth. Not quite the marquee pitching matchup one might have expected.

Dodgers get the tying run to the plate, but it’s deep fly out to the warning track in center where Victorino makes the leaping catch to end the seventh. Six outs left to get.

Even Mandy can’t swat a three-run homer, with no-one on base. Though if this were the Brewers or Giants, they’d probably petition the league to change the scoring.

He’ll be the first pitcher since Kirk Rueter for the 2002 Giants, to allow five or more earned runs, pitch the minimum five innings and still get the win in a post-season game.

Empty seats at Dodger Stadium
“They’ll be packed in here by the end of the night,” says the apologist commentator. I don’t know why LA fans get so peeved about the whole ‘arrive late, leave early’ thing: it’s god’s honest truth. If you have tickets but still can’t get there on time for the NLCS, there’s no hope for you.

Personally
I am hoping to try and get in Horror Express [1973, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and Telly Savalas] before Dexter at nine. It’s amazing the crap public-domain films ASU TV screens when they don’t have any classes to show. it was Bloody Pit of Horror this afternoon, starring Mr. Jayne Mansfield, Micky Hargitay as a guy who is possessed by the evil spirit of a former executioner and stars torturing people. Though the effect is lessened these days, by an unfortunate resemblance to the lead singer of The Aquabats.
