Playoffs 2008: NLCS - Dodgers/Phillies
With half of the teams now out of the post-season and only the Championship Series to play until the World Series, my thoughts are to keep one thread open per series. Depending on the activity level, we will adjust how future gameday threads are opened and handled. We hope that, with increased interest in the Championship Series' results, that these threads will continue to draw knowledgeable and well-meaning baseball fans from all over. Note, however, that these open threads are not to be misconstrued as a place where visiting fans can gloat about their teams' successes; please take excessive celebratory remarks home.
Game 5: 10/15, 5:22pm AZT, FOX
Phillies Lead 3-1
|

Well, what can be said about this one? Certainly I should be able to think of something better than Chad Billingsley, who said: “It’s pretty much do or die.” Really? Pretty much? How is it not do or die in this situation?? Anyway, I don't have much to say today. The Dodgers put their hopes on Billingsley's shoulders, who had a terrible Game 2 start, giving up 8 runs in less than 3 innings. Cole Hamels goes tonight on regular rest, and he has looked great this post-season.
Joe Torre cancelled practice yesterday to give the Dodgers a mental break, while Charlie Manuel wanted to keep his team loose and flowing. Can the Dodger bullpen recover? Can the Phillies offense get the support they need from Hamels? The Phillies have history on their side - 9 of 11 teams to be up 3-0 in an LCS have gone on to win the series. (Boston in '04 and '07 being the exceptions.)
Game 5, here we come!!

Come on, Phillies
Seems to me like the media has been pretty quick to transfer their adulation from the Cubs to the Dodgers.
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
Very much so! They seem to be completely in love with them.
In other news, Jeannie Zelasko said during the pre-game, “Well, it’s down to two, at least in the National League.” Seriously? How many are still left in the AL?
And also, she said, “We’ve had enough of Mark Grace for now” and then went to that baseball-lovin’ fool, Joe Buck. Enough of Mark Grace? I don’t think so. And also, how rude.

Strange.
No posts from Wildcats after the Dodgers were no longer leading.
That is in no way familiar.
Since he doesn't show up when they lose
He is not welcome here if they win.

He was obviously busy on the phone
Giving Torre advice on how to come back in the game. Too bad Joe didn’t listen, I’m sure.
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
Not bad
We got to dinner at the middle of the sixth, and mrskishi had been kind enough to pick a restaurant showing the game- or I was lucky enough, whichever. Glad I caught the important bits.
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
Missed most of the game
Turned it off after LA’s second run, to watch Kevin Bacon go all vigilante in Death Sentence. Kinda wished I’d seen it now, of course, but I’m still happy with the result.
Nice line
The Phillies have been great since Manny was traded to the Dodgers
Hard to imagine many dbacks fans rooting for LA. Now that they’re finally winning a few games, the Dodgers are anathema again – surly Jeff Kent, squirrelly money spent, Ned Coletti, young players who are ready, wont run Shawn Green, frontrunner celebrity scene, smog-wise, blog-wise, Mann-wise, fan-wise….we “loathe” LA :-)

Hey, look!
We’re having a four-day weekend, so are catching up on movies and slothing – already seen The Bourne Ultimatum. So it’s looking pretty good for me to be about and enjoying this one, along I think with a Krispy Kreme donut. Or twelve. :-)
Go, Phillies.
And, yeah, Bookman’s rules. :-)
Me and my buddy are going to watch the sox/rays tonight at the bar
He’s going for the Sox, i’m going for the Rays.

Same as last night
Dodgers strike first. But after having second and third with no outs, they are probably disappointed not to come away with more than a single run.
BEAT. EL. AY... BEAT. EL. AY...
Great inning for the Phillies. Didn’t look like much, after the first two batters K’d, but they then got five straight hits – including one by the pitcher. Howard then K’d to end it, so I guess Billingsley struck out the side: albeit around four runs by the opposition. Can’t be often that happens.
Howard, it appears, is completely incapable of hitting the curve-ball. Billingsley has thrown eight pitches to him, all breaking pitches, striking him out twice, and Howard hasn’t even been able to foul one off. File that one away for the next time we face the Phillies.
Myers does it again
2-for-2 with three RBI today. Half as many hits this game, as he had in the entire regular season. Billingsley is gone, and the Phillies get that run back, and another one.
What, no AZWILDCATS?
There's a surprise.
However, you are no longer allowed to post here during the playoffs. If you don’t show up when your team loses the first game, and is getting hammered in the second, then you are not welcome when they threaten to come back.
Any further posts here this post-season will result in your immediate, irrevocable banning as a troll. This is not arguable or up for debate.

You know your offense is having a good day
When your clean-up batter gets to hit with two outs in the first, second and third innings. :-)
Phillies load the bases again, and Joe Torre inserts his fourth pitcher of the game already. Anyone know if Manny has a good curveball?
Myers gets the third out with a K
But it’s a wild pitch, so Furcal reaches. Martin hits and Ramirez homers, to make it 8-5 in the top of the fourth. Not quite the marquee pitching matchup one might have expected.
Almost two hours gone
And we are still only in the middle of the fourth inning. No-one had any plans to go anywhere tonight, did they?
Wondering if this one will be over before the Rays game starts! Maybe Fox will give us split-screen.

BBC America has been showing the original, and it looked interesting.
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
Phew
Dodgers get the tying run to the plate, but it’s deep fly out to the warning track in center where Victorino makes the leaping catch to end the seventh. Six outs left to get.
Leaving runners stranded in scoring position?
Diamondbacks fans can sympathize.
But most actively choose not to.
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
And there we go
Even Mandy can’t swat a three-run homer, with no-one on base. Though if this were the Brewers or Giants, they’d probably petition the league to change the scoring.
by Jim McLennan on Oct 10, 2008 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions
And so it shall be
Especially nice if Manny would be kind enough to strike out.
Nice to see Rafael “He’s a difference-maker” Furcal go 1 for 5 on the day, too.
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
If Myers holds on
He’ll be the first pitcher since Kirk Rueter for the 2002 Giants, to allow five or more earned runs, pitch the minimum five innings and still get the win in a post-season game.
And only the third
In post-season history. The other was David Cone for the 1998 Yankees.

I’m sure most of the Dodgers fans will have already left by the time the Phillies clinched it.

Though the on-field reporter dropping a Q on Lidge about his manager’s mother dying today was a bit unexpected and unnecessary. I see Mark Grace on the post-game show, so pleased to see him still getting a bit of work. :-)
And on to the Rays-Red Sox

Personally
I am hoping to try and get in Horror Express [1973, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and Telly Savalas] before Dexter at nine. It’s amazing the crap public-domain films ASU TV screens when they don’t have any classes to show. it was Bloody Pit of Horror this afternoon, starring Mr. Jayne Mansfield, Micky Hargitay as a guy who is possessed by the evil spirit of a former executioner and stars torturing people. Though the effect is lessened these days, by an unfortunate resemblance to the lead singer of The Aquabats.

I don’t think I like Manny Ramirez at all. He’s a jerk.
And what was that whole bench-clearing thing? Nobody got hit, did they?
It's like living with a six-year old.
Russell Martin was hit
Then he was thrown high and tight. Retaliation was coming, and it came in the form of a pitch from Kuroda above the head of Victorino. Victorino’s all “Dude, hit me in the ribs, fine, but NOT MY HEAD” and after he grounded out, he continued, and benches cleared.
Why Manny got all hotheaded about it is anybody’s guess.

I always feel sorry for a guy who gets pulled for a pinch hitter, and then the PH gets out anyway.
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
I love this headline
“One high heater showed the Dodgers were tired of being bullied by the Phils in the NLCS.”
Bullied? You mean “beaten”?
Also, for those of us who didn’t see the brawl on TV, this is interesting. Looks less like a brawl, more like a mingling, with half a dozen Dodgers keeping Manny from doing something stupid enough to get him tossed and suspended.

So far, so good
I’m just hoping for the Phillies to take one of the games in LA, then they can win it by taking either game back in their home stadium.
2-1 good guys,
but Philly’s playing like they dont need to win this game, so they probably wont, imo. I hope I’m wong.
They’re hitting Lowe, but what’s with Rollins not stealing in the first, Victorino (a very good bunter) not bunting in the third run in the first, Howard not digging out the booted grounder to deep second. I just dont see a playoff sense of urgency.
I love it
When the commentators say something like ‘Ramirez takes a pitch right down the middle’ and the Pitch Tracker than clearly shows the ball outside.
Lot of baserunners
Seven for the Phillies, six for the Dodgers. Probably slows things down a bit, but it’s only 50 minutes so far, so is moving at a decent rate.

But nine earned runs in 9.1 innings, mostly thanks to 11 walks, at the ass-end of the 2004 season, so eminently forgettable, certainly.

Yes, you put a pitcher with a career ERA+ of 89, over ten years, into a playoff game when it’s tied. He surrenders a homer to the first batter he faces, so you’re now behind, but you have no backup plan, leave him in there to let the next two batters reach base and the game is now perilously close to being blown open.

It is brilliant. Plus, OMG, How I Met Your Mother was brilliant tonight.
We're having a renaissance, so stick around.
I've started watching Chuck, too
I’m about four episodes in to the first season. It’s cute, I wonder why I didn’t watch it when it was actually on.
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
As soco will attest to
I am a Firefly-hooker. Anything the actors are in I will see. This is mostly good, as it did get me into Chuck from episode 1, it also made me see 3:10 to Yuma. (Damn you Alan Tudyk, you and your amazingness! I sat through 3 hours of crap for like 10 minutes with you in it!)
We're having a renaissance, so stick around.
I'm pretty much the same way
The only thing I haven’t given in to yet is Stargate Atlantis, I think. And there was a movie with the guy who played Simon that I meant to rent, but never got around to. And Chuck, up until now.
And I liked 3:10 to Yuma.
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
Was it the one where he is playing a hypochondriac? We liked it, though it was kind of cheesy. It, oddly enough, had a character from SGA that I liked. Jewel Staite is painfully adorable on SGA, even though they are taking her in a direction that makes me want to get sick on the entirety of the writers room.
It is so freaking LONG and GORY. This might not be aided by the fact that we saw “The Assasination of Jesse James” directly after and it was so beautiful that I couldn’t take it.
We're having a renaissance, so stick around.

Yes
With all the market driven blather on Manny showing up the Red Sox, or the Red Sox showing up Manny, watching his current and former teams fail to advance would double the pleasure, double the fun.

I was going to respond to this, but I can’t figure out how to type like Frank Caliendo pretending to be Donald Trump. Maybe on a solid gold keyboard, because Donald Trump is very rich.
But that’d be heavy.
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
Interesting poll on azcentral.com
Which win is the most satisfying?
Cardinals over Cowboys.
71.45%
Suns over Spurs or Lakers.
14.68%
ASU/UA over UA/ASU in anything.
12.35%
D-Backs over Dodgers.
1.51%
Total Votes: 2841
Not a big surprise the day AFTER a huge win by the Cards over the ’Boys though. Am a bit disappointed the DBacks rank so low.

Be interesting to see the results if the poll was done in, say, April or May.

That is probably the case.
our season is over and football is in full swing with basketball starting anew.

I note that the Coyotes don’t even merit an option. =)

good catch!
that hadn’t dawned on me.
I hear good things about them and hope we can have a white out in glendale after the regular season is over.

Yep.
Other than the obvious “caring about the NHL” problem, there’s also the fact that the Coyotes haven’t developed a rival in their stay in the desert. The closest they get is either the Red Wings, because everyone hates the Red Wings, or the Stars in the late ’90s.
Yahoo had a story
on the top ten candidates for a franchise move. the ‘Yotes were in that list. They suggested the ’Yotes move back to Winnipeg to be in a ’real’ hockey town. The ‘downfall of the ’yotes was their move out to Glendale. I bet they would be drawing very well if more centrally located. I know Card season ticket holders out in the east valley who will not be renewing due to the long drive.
I remember going to hockey games at the mad house on McDowell when the Roadrunner’s were playing. They could pack that venue in its heyday and the crowd was very much into the game. This goes back to the WHL/WHA days (before my time) and even more recently with the IHL. The Roadrunners are back and playing in the Suns arena, but it is several grades (classes)lower than the Roadrunners of old.

I'd
certainly willing to try hockey if they were in Central Phoenix or the East Valley. Going all the way to Glendale, especially during the week, is almost out of the question for me, nevermind on a regular basis.
We are gonna get drunk with Adam Dunn and we're gonna head-butt some damn kangaroos.
I love reading predictions
From the Imagine Sports prediction of yesterday’s NLCS game:
So, your key leverage points are whether Lowe is able to do well on 3-days’ rest and whether the LA pen holds it if he does. If not, the Dodgers may have trouble tonight if they can’t out-hit the Phils to win.
Now, doesn’t that really translates to this: “If the Dodgers starting pitcher and bullpen don’t do well, they’ll need to hit better than the Phillies to win.”
Well, duh.
Their prediction for tonight’s Rays game pretty much seems to be “If the Rays can’t hit Wakefield’s knuckleball, they’ll probably lose.” Excellent work, guys, glad we’ve got computers to help us figure things out like this.

Fightin' Phils!
Keep the chatter going, folks. I was there in Arizona in 2001 (attended Game One of the NLDS, the 1-0 Schilling vs. Morris duel) and remember how incredible that was, now I WANT SOME!
Ha
Thanks to one of the posters over that The Good Phight, who pointed out this gem:
Slugger Manny Ramirez was reminded that his Boston Red Sox rallied from a 3-1 American League Championship Series deficit in 2007, but he provided little optimism.
“That was Boston,” Ramirez said. “That was a great team. This is different.”
Is the Manny-LA lovefest done? Please, oh please?

Is there anything better
Than seeing Mandy ground out on the first pitch?
Any guesses where he’ll be next year? The TV seems to reckon he’ll get only a two-year deal, no-one will want to touch him for longer than that, because of the issues he had in Boston.
I think that's about right.
But there’s always a chance Boras will convince someone that second-half Manny is the real deal, and the first half was just a grumpy aberration. I could see somebody reaching and giving him like four years, particularly if Hanky boy in New York gets extremely desperate this offseason.
I fixed it for you
5-0 Phillies.
Furcal sucks again. :-)

Welcome back, Furcal
Remember, like two weeks ago, when they kept saying he was such a huge boost for the Dodgers in the post-season?
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
Safe at first on shortstop R. Furcal's throwing error
I love seeing that.
Again. And again. And again…
Ask, and ye shall receive
I heard all this shouting from the TV in the living room – surely the Dodgers had homered, or at least scored a run. No, apparently they’d got someone into scoring position. Wooo! DeWitt soon took care of that little threat.
by Jim McLennan on Oct 15, 2008 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions
I thought I heard earlier
that DeWitt himself has left like 11 men on base! I actually thought it was 17 but that seems really high. He’s 1 for 13 and a lot of DPs.
DeWitt is now pulled.

Well okay, I like that plan
Let the fans get some hope back and then CRUSH IT… bwahaha Jeff Kent, you suck too.
Nice stat from over on Dodger Thoughts
In 2 ABs in 1 game, Blake DeWitt hit the same no. of double plays, 2, that Akinori Iwamura hit into in 627 ABs over 152 games.

Puling Maddux for a PH?
Not sure that won’t backfire on them.
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
Makes sense
Got to try and get one run back at a time. Mind you, Kent’s career average as a pinch-hitter, according to the TV, was something like .128.
by Jim McLennan on Oct 15, 2008 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions
And Maddux's career average is .171, so it'd be better to keep him out there!
I’d just think that, given how much of their bullpen they threw out there last time, they should take the advantage of having a guy out there who can give them four innings if they need them.
"Now, this is the dumbest thing I've ever heard [Hank Steinbrenner] say, and this is the third time I've said that this season."
I see
They have now charged Furcal with three errors. :-) $39m for three years of a 99 OPS+. Good signing, LA!
As a comparison
Drew had an OPS+ of 96 over the same time, for about one-tenth of the cost.

I was a bit disappointed. It had its moments, but I didn’t really gain much insight into the events in question.
by Jim McLennan on Oct 15, 2008 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions
I think
it did well in highlighting some motivations of the players, since without the historical insight it could be confusing for someone to look back on.
We are gonna get drunk with Adam Dunn and we're gonna head-butt some damn kangaroos.
Yes, it did make it clear
That it was an unfortunate combination of circumstance: players who were good enough to get the World Series, but disgruntled enough to accept a bribe, in an era where you basically could only play for one team.
I’m using the above sentence in my review. :-)
by Jim McLennan on Oct 15, 2008 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions
'Tis a good line
If I remember correctly, the movie also has some excellent baseball playing scenes. It seems too many movies shy away from why we want to see the movie in the first place.
We are gonna get drunk with Adam Dunn and we're gonna head-butt some damn kangaroos.

I know
Chuck Connors, who was The Rifleman in the 50’s and was also in Soylent Green, got one at-bat with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1949. And Kevin Costner has made enough baseball films that he must have something of an idea…

There. He singled. Now go back to the American League.
MVP time..
Assuming the Phillies hold on, who do you choose for MVP? I would pick either Victorino or Hamels.
Difficult
Victorino has six RBI, but is only 4-for-18. I’d go with Hamels: 14 IP, 3 ER and a 2-0 record.
by Jim McLennan on Oct 15, 2008 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions
