Diamondbacks pick up 2010 option on Jon Rauch
Here's hoping he impresses us more in 2009, so we aren't dreading this next off-season...

Can anyone explain
Why we picked it up now, rather than – oh, I dunno – waiting to see whether he blows chunks again next year?

Yes, I can.
…
Oh, you mean you actually wanted me to explain it? Right.
According to Nick Piecoro, the Diamondbacks had to make a decision within five days after the end of this year’s World Series. Nick, notably, though we wouldn’t pick it up, since we still had arbitration rights to Rauch even if we declined it, but obviously he was mistaken.

This
“We think at his age and cost he is a good fit for us,” Byrnes said
…might be a clue.
I get the picture of a cigarette-burned and slightly stained Jon Rauch sitting on the curb with a “Free Sofa! Reliever!” sign pinned to his shirt. Byrnes flipped over the cushions, jumped on the springs a little and decided he can cover up most of the stains with a old bedsheet. And voila! The D-Backs have a new sofa for the rumpus room.

Well
at least we have a 6’10" guy. I think that’s the main thing.
