2008 World Series: Philadelphia Phillies vs Tampa Bay Rays
From 30 teams to 2, we have arrived at the end of the race. The National League Champion Phillies now take on the American League Champion Rays to determine the best team in the world*. Welcome to.... the World Series. (There's only one October. Only on FOX.)
* Of course, the "World Series" is only for MLB teams. The "World Baseball Classic" will be coming back this spring.

Gee, thanks, Fox

the rays don’t look so comfortable agains Hamels… they’re swinging at everything =0

Evening, folks
Just got home – looks like Hamels is being as good as advertised. HUGE double-play to get out of that inning.
I have a piece of paper with "Rays" written on it
in blue crayon pinned to a baseball cap to show my support.
We will meet in Red 3 at the hour of scampering.
Let's hope
You don’t mean Ray Winstone, or he’ll want his cap back… [Sorry, was watching Love, Honour and Obey a couple of days ago, and so he’s the first Ray that sprang to mind…]

If Kazmir had hit Burrell
I bet he would’ve been called out for interference / running inside the base line.
No matter… next pitch, third out.
a pitch was miles outside and away
and was called for a strike to Hamel
We will meet in Red 3 at the hour of scampering.
Interesting game so far.
Little bit of offense, little bit of pitching, Kazmir taking 8,000 pitches to get through five innings. Probably about what we expected.
I like this new tradition
of having military singers sing in the 7th inning. It’s much more meaningful to them, and it’s much more likely that the person can actually sing well instead of trying to do too much to impress the audience.

Their Upton didn't do too well
If blame had to fall on one player, his two double plays would be a conspicuous target.
"And a note to self that we must tread carefully if we wish not to give gratuitous offense, and even more carefully if we do wish to give it."

Game over
Phillies take the lead, but I can’t say this one was unexpected. The Rays should bounce back to level things tomorrow.
I'd like
to quote ESPN’s Jim Caple:
“I pick the Rays to sweep because the American League is that much superior to the National League, which once again got smoked in interleague play and the All-Star Game. It’s like the majors versus AAA.”
Twit.
We are gonna get drunk with Adam Dunn and we're gonna head-butt some damn kangaroos.
Uh-oh
I think Philadelphia might win the series. Why? Because according to Yahoo, the Rays have an edge in the “Intangibles” category. In every series this post-season, Yahoo has said that the team that would eventually lose had an edge in Intangibles.
Seriously, that’s an impressive streak.
"And a note to self that we must tread carefully if we wish not to give gratuitous offense, and even more carefully if we do wish to give it."
-Stephen Fry
Wait
So now they can measure the intangibles? But in the last series, that wasn’t measurable? Something is wrong with their statistics.

I think it's safe to say
That if you can quantify them, they aren’t intangibles.

And in other news
The SnakePitette is a-flutter today, having spent the day working as an extra on Middle Men, starring Luke Wilson and Giovanni Ribisi, currently filming around the valley. She got to stand next to Luke in one sceen, so she’s all ‘OMGWTFBBQ PONEEEEES!’ :-)
That's something you don't see every day
C. Utley flied into double play right to first, J. Werth out at first
Wow
Shields is pulling a nice Houdini act. RISP with one out in four of five innings, and he hasn’t given up any runs.
Of course, the fact that the Phillies are something like 1 for 23 with RISP so far this series helps.
"And a note to self that we must tread carefully if we wish not to give gratuitous offense, and even more carefully if we do wish to give it."
-Stephen Fry
James Shields leaves in the 6th...
Two runners on, Wheeler comes in to try to keep the Phillies off the board.
Make that 3
The Rays would love to get that run back here in the bottom of the 8th.

I guess it depends
It just seems that so much of what made Lock, Stock or Basic Instinct successful [and, indeed, fun] would not translate too well to the Hindi culture. Samurai films and westerns are more or less the same, just with swords instead of guns [gross simplification, but you see my point] I mean, they can’t even show people kissing on screen, so that’s all the two most memorable scenes of Basic Instinct right out the window.

To no great surprise
This is proving a viewing disaster for Fox. Despite its closeness, Game Three was “the lowest-rated in the history of television, by a comfy margin. The game averaged 6.1 percent of U.S. households, beating the previous low of 8.0 for Game 1 in 2006.”
Game Five Finale Postponed
Again, until Wednesday at the earliest. Weren’t they supposed to be playing in Tampa on Wednesday?
I was glad, at least, to see that Bud wasn’t going to let the Series end on a shortened game. I’ll put that in my (scant) file of “Things Bud Selig has done that I’ve been in favor of.” Okay, my scant file of “Things Bud Selig has done that I’ve been in favor of, and acknowledge.”
Also, memo to Jeff Passan: What, first the Rays didn’t have enough fans, and now the fans they have aren’t good enough? Shut the hell up. I’m tired of hearing about what fans should and shouldn’t be doing to support their team, or how not enough fans are showing up. You know what? The fans who are there are there because they love the team and the game. The fans who aren’t there? Aren’t reading your articles, jackass. So the fans have cowbells, so what? Gasp, shock and horror at the mohawks. They’re %#@&ing enjoying themselves, so why not let them? Don’t give me more of this “Tampa doesn’t deserve this” BS, because it doesn’t matter- they’ve got it, and you just need to deal with it and move on. Instead, Tampa doesn’t deserve this BS from you and every other columnist out there.
