Melvin's staff to return intact next season
The Diamondbacks reached agreements with the remainder of manager Bob Melvin's staff, ensuring that all of the club's coaches will be back for 2009. "This entire staff has been here most of the last two years, and for the most part we've played well," General Manager Josh Byrnes said. "Obviously, this past year we fell short of our goals. The staff has done good job, and we want to keep it together and get back to playing at a postseason level."

There were
problems with customs from the Netherlands. Not to mention the organization’s supposedly new focus on “fiscal responsibility.” I’m looking at you, Eric Byrnes’ extension.
I have an irrational mancrush on Stephen Drew.
But they could have used it
To power the stadium lights too!

Guess they’ll have to stick to the hamster wheels.

You can get ’em from Spain for cheaper, but theirs are specially designed for jousting.

Pros: cross trained for Euro football and the goal blocking
span would be useful in SS.
Cons: Uniform costs would be high and their footwork sucks.
Bob Melvin: Black Denarian in disguise.

Speaking of the staff...
Kirk Gibson in an ESPN piece about his homer off Eckersley 20 years ago:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3644345
Of note at the end:
“The Diamondbacks right now have some of the elements of the 1984 Tigers team I played with as champs. As you go along in baseball, you get better at dealing with adversity. We had a disastrous couple of weeks at the end of last season. We’ll refine things a bit and be more consistent.”
I fixed it for Gibby

Exactly
I was wondering, if we had a couple of disastrous weeks, what would he consider May through August?
"And a note to self that we must tread carefully if we wish not to give gratuitous offense, and even more carefully if we do wish to give it."
-Stephen Fry
Not to wish to argue with Gibson
But our record over the last “couple of weeks at the end of last season” was actually 8-4. He might want to look at the end of May, when we went 3-10. We didn’t go better than 7-6 in any 13-game streak from May 4 until July 27. Those are the “couple of weeks” – times about six – that cost us the season.

Argue away
Hopefully the last part of his statement is more reliable than the rest. Aside from both teams having roughly the same number of baseball players with roughly the same number of arms, fingers and toes, I don’t see a huge relationship between last year’s D-Backs and a championship team.
