Best Baseball Game

Another slow day at the office prompts more dribble from the Englishman...

Do any of you guys play baseball video games and if so what's your preffered weapon of choice?

I'm really into Out of the Park Baseball 2007 as I love my management sims but I also have Baseball 2k7 on my PSP.

The only problem with live actionseems to be that you can never play a full season as it literally takes a full season to do so...

Any current tips or nostalgic memories?

I'm not a fan, really.
In real life when I played baseball I was a good hitter but atrocious fielder.  In the video games I couldn't hit a baseball to save my life yet play excellent defense.  So I lose games 1-0, 2-0, and so on as I can't ever get a guy to score.

One I played recently that was kind of fun (don't know if it's over in England yet) is the Bigs.  I played it on Xbox 360, though, not PSP, but it was a lot of fun for an arcade version of baseball.

Stay grindy, my friends.

Sim games for me. Usually.

Well, that's back asswards!  No DH in your Little League? <grin>

I'm not much of a button masher myself.  Prefer the sim-like games. OOTP probably gets my vote.

Love playing Backyard Baseball (kids game) with my 4 and 6 year old.

Never, ever throw a fastball to that guy.

Oh, man...
I love video games, and I love baseball, but up until recently, I've never been able to combine the two very much.  I love watching baseball, but some of the hardcore, full-on simulation games eventually just drive me mad.  Or I get so into it that I start to obsess, and it drives my wife mad.  Either way, not good.

I've got a copy of MLB '06: The Show that I picked up a while ago for pretty cheap, and that keeps me entertained, but what I really want to pick up is The Bigs.  Very arcade-style, which I enjoy.  It's kind of the baseball version of NBA Jams, which was one of the staples of my high school experience.

MLB 06: The Show
...is the best one I have found lately. I like the new Road To The Show game mode, and am having a great time as 3b for The Diamondbacks. The best part of the game, is that each game is simmed to your player's next at bat or play in the field, so the games are a lot quicker than they are in other modes.

The only complaints I have about the game are: The music on menu screens is un-fucking-bearably bad, and Bob Melvin really is a moron in the game. I'm just past the all star break in my 3rd year, and only have 220 something at bats, despite a .528/43/107 line.

Really quality game, though, and I think I could spend a few hours playing it every day, even if I had something better to do.

by leemellon on Sep 5, 2007 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

Are you playing '06 or '07?
The Road to the Show thing is what makes me want to give '07 a spin.

Oh, and it's not just Melvin- I was playing for the Blue Jays on '06, batting .560 and didn't have enough at-bats to qualify for the post season awards.  '06 also doesn't think Webby is a very good pitcher, or that the NL ever has much of a chance of winning the World Series, it seems.

by kishi on Sep 5, 2007 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

'07
is what I meant. Is there even a "Road To The Show" in '06? Anyway, yeah, what bullshit that the game purposely keeps you just under enough at bats to qualify for the first few seasons. I could have easily won all of the offensive awards, rookie of the year, and a gold glove, and that's with only 140-some at bats. Great game, though.

Kinda goofy
How they manage the organization with "The Show". I'd have a great line and get immediately sent back down to AAA after a 3 HR game. Still came back to set the records for pretty much everything career-wise.

Another thing that bothers me about that game is that they make you retire, even when you are still putting up awesome stats and your ability bars still have some juice.

How many years
will it let you go before forcing you to retire? that does sound annoying, but I have not gotten to that point yet. I'm in my 4th season right now.

by leemellon on Sep 7, 2007 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Hmmm
Sounds like an awesome mode to me, I have a 360 but baseball games are hard to find over here. The people that made out of the park made a game called inside the park baseball which allows you to create a player and track his career from draft day to retirement. It's a bit old now but you can still download the demo for free.

The whole reason i play OOTP is the speed, you can have a real dynasty going on and its fun managing the ballclub from single A to the bigs.

I don't have any of the new systems
I don't have anything later than an N64, and the one baseball game I had on my Sega Genesis completely blows. BUT! One of my favorite games of all time has to be Nintendo's Baseball Simulator 1000. It's animated and unlifelike, and very cute. Everyone moves in sync. Some of the teams (the only teams worth playing) have special powers. It's awesome. :) I still play it now and then with my roommate and kick her butt. (Hey, she volunteers for it...)

Ha
Yeah, on the theme of Nintendo I forgot to mention Wii baseball which is quite fun, swinging aimlessly at a curve :D

I still play
MVP 2005 on the GameCube.  Dynasty mode.  I'm not allowed to by any of those new-fangled systems.

My only beef with that game is that Webb doesn't usually achieve much through the years.  Always ends up as a Derek Lowe type.

Earl Weaver Baseball II
That's the only one I've ever got into, and boy, did I get into it. That was probably around 1994 or so, on my housemate's computer. It was awesome, and I dread to think the hours I wasted, with my hand-picked team, all named after actresses I fancied... [I still remember the time Phoebe Cates hit four homers in a game. :-)]

Since then, I just haven't had the time to get into it. I wouldn't mind, and Mrs. SnakePit has hinted at Christmas gifts in this line, but the reality is that it either wouldn't get used, or worse, would get used, and I'd end up functioning on three hours of sleep per night, as I tried to cram everything in. But maybe I'll try and download EWB II, just for nostalgia's sake. If you don't hear from me again, that'll be why!

The Show
An amazing game, its literally an addiction and quite nice carrying the D-Backs as the number two pitcher.

btw: Pablo Sanchez is a beast

Ah yes.
I'm a big fan of MLB 06: The Show (although I enjoyed MVP Baseball before it lost access to the license). Generally I run a couple seasons a year: one with the most up-to-date Arizona roster possible, and another with a roster consisting solely of myself, roommates, historical figures (Ghandi is a left-handed speedster at second base, for example) and other oddities.

Keeps me amused throughout the summer whenever I have some time off.

In my nightmares, I see Brian Bruney...make it stop...

Gandhi....
....hahaha! That's great. I used to have a roster made up entirely of names mentioned in Bob Dylan songs. And Brandon Webb.

by leemellon on Sep 6, 2007 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

We even misspell his name...
Just to avoid any lawsuits. It's safer that way.

Other highlights on our annual teams:
-Johnny Catch (#22), a young fireballer with a standard curve and straight change who's working on his stamina
-Knott Strate, a junkball left-hander who throws 81 on his fastball, along with a screw, slider, knucklecurve and circle change
-Gon Daon, a Korean sidearm sinkerballer
-Steve McSteel, the prototypical third baseman. Power, range, hits for decent average, cannon of an arm.

I swear, this stuff never fails to crack us up.

In my nightmares, I see Brian Bruney...make it stop...

This makes me laugh
After Augie threw his inning, I went into my team in MVP05 and created a new pitcher that threw 80mph fastballs with a wicked 80 mph 2 seamer, a palmball (you can't make the change go slower then 72 or something silly like that), and a slow slurve.

Used to buy Diamond Mind
and replay seasons back in the day.  I remember it as being fairly expensive.

Hmmm, just went to the website.  Still pretty pricey.  And unlike OOTP products one has to buy season disks from DM rather than simply download a free database.

DM was very accurate - so much so there was little one could do from a managerial standpoint to change season results for a given team by any wide margin. It's not as if your genius would have taken the 2003 Tigers anywhere in the DM world. After a few years of actually 'playing' seasons, I'd just make lineup and roster changes then sim the entire season x number of times.  It got old.

by cavscout on Sep 6, 2007 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

What's OOTP?
Just wondering.

Personally, I'm more into shooters. (Mostly historical; the Call of Duty and Medal of Honor series', Vietcong, etc., also Postal 2) The only sports game I'm really a big fan of is Madden. :)

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

OOTP
Out of the Park.

Looks like they also do a boxing sim!?

Anyway, the baseball sims set the standard for the industry, IMO.  Most gaming reviews seem to agree. You can download and play OOTP 5 (they are on ver 7) for free. At least you could a few months ago...

OOTP 5
Still seems to require a license. They talk about free versions on the site, but don't say specifically which ones those are. All guidance welcome...

by Jim McLennan on Sep 10, 2007 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Hmmm
I'm at work so can't vouch for it, but I believe this link gets it done:

http://www.ootpdevfiles.com/ootp/ootp5setup.exe

Did you get it installed only to be asked a registration number?

FWIW, I had problems with OOTP 5 crashing after I updated my dinosaur of a computer.  Might want to forgo the issue entirely and just check out a the demo of the newest version.

by cavscout on Sep 10, 2007 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Never Mind
Not a link to the free game.  Perhaps it's no longer available...

by cavscout on Sep 11, 2007 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought
That you just downloaded it and it came complete with the license?

Id suggest downloading the demo of the new one though I think you get unrestricted play for a couple of days

by Wimb on Sep 11, 2007 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

OOTP
Has been taken over by sports interactive, who produce the vastly succesful Football Manager (formerly known as Championship Manager) football(soccer) management games.

I've got 2007 and it's awesome, you can either run a fictional universe and customise all the rules under the sun (waivers, and all the financial stuff) or just download an unofficial MLB roster set and run with it.

Pretty intense or light depending on what you fancy. Managing the Sidewinders is pretty fun :)
