David Wells Cut by Padres

and, according to ESPN.com:

"His agent, Gregg Clifton, said Wells was flying to the hunting ranch in Michigan that he co-owns with former big leaguer Kirk Gibson."

Any interest here for a back-of-the-rotation starter who has a 14.33 ERA over his last four starts but has a penchant of pulling it together in the postseason?

Washed up, dont want him
Saw this yesterday when they said they were cutting him to make room for Young to come off the D/L.
I think age and his lifestyle has caught up with him now and he doesnt have anything to offer better than what we have (yes, even BK....).

I tend to agree
but watching BK yesterday. Yikes.

At least Wells might have spent wisely.

Tough to tell what his problem is
GB% is down, BB% is way up which would indicate control problems possibly related to injury, conditioning or just age.

The biggest thing that stands out is his ridiculously high BABIP which could either mean that he has been super unlucky or he just isn't a major league quality pitcher anymore.

The sad thing is that 3 out of 5 SP's are not pitching like MLB quality pitchers either.

The problem
Is that he's toast.  He's too old and too fat.  He's lost even the slight amount of velocity that he had before.  Worst of all, he's lost the ability to throw to a spot.  His breaking balls are flat and his fastball is slow.  He's leaving everything up in the zone, thus the drop in GB%.

The other issue is that you don't want to trade anything for him and his salary this year was 3mil.  I don't even want to pay the prorated amount of that.

It's just a bad idea.  I'd rather stick with Kim, if these are the choices.

I want
Petit back, we do have viable choices, why settle for a basket case ready to implode again?

I am with you!
If Kim blows it again put him in the pen or cut him loose and bring the Petit Unit back.

Interest? Hmm....
I suppose the Dbacks could always use the services of a pitcher in his mid-40s, who's lost velocity, and has had injuries recently, whose last team no longer wanted him.

I suppose we could use another, too.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.
