Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Quentin is sent down to AAA

"The Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday optioned rookie outfielder Carlos Quentin to Class AAA Tucson of the Pacific Coast League.

Quentin was hitting .210 with five homers and 28 RBI in 66 games for the Diamondbacks this season.

To replace Quentin, Arizona recalled outfielder Jeff Salazar from Tucson. Salazar was hitting .301 with eight homers and 50 RBI for the Sidewinders."

Let's hope Quentin can get his stuff together now and come back later.  Any thoughts on Quentin being sent down and Salazar coming up? Anyone shocked?

Nope
Great move. Both for the DBacks and Quentin's development.

It's a start...
Next up, fire Seitzer, who appears to have got into the heads of all our young players, and screwed them over royally this year. Maybe it's him who should have been sent down to Tucson?

it will be interesting
Realizing the talent is much less at AAA, it will be interesting to see how quickly the hitting coach down there fixes Quentin.

If Quentin starts out cold (.200 - .250 in first few weeks?) and then in a few weeks goes on a tear, it might just prove what many people on this site believe....Seitzer sucks and is wasting young, free-swinging talent.

I do believe Seitzer has a good philosophy and approach, but he is more suited for a veteran team.

Side note: anyone else only think of KS as an RBI Baseball wasted hitter on the AL all-star team? Okay, just me.

What's more surprising...
...is that it took the Dbacks this long to do it.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

We'll see what happens
I think it's possible Quentin was over-analyzing himself: typical Stamford graduate. :-) He certainly came across that way in The Show. It's really the first time he's had to face up to a prolonged period of slumpage: at every level from college through the minors, he posted an OPS of over .900. For him now to be sitting below .650 has got to be a shock, and I think it's perhaps causing a death-spiral of sorts.

As for Seitzer, I think his days are numbered. The team is not hitting anywhere near what it was expected to do: generally, you'd except a range of performance, some over, some under, but the relentless nature of our downside makes him a very obvious target. A scapegoat? Probably: after all, it's not him popping out weakly with a runner on third and one out. But the results speak for themselves. It's only a matter of time, I suspect...

Tough call
I've never been one to blame coaches in any sport for the performance of players on the field/court/ice but something is definitely not right. All of our young hitters have had tremendous success at every level but not now? I could see if maybe it was one or two guys but for Drew, Q, Young, Montero...etc to all be having way below par seasons is a bit too much to be a coincidence. Only Byrnes is having an above average season and he's the guy everyone wants to get rid of.

Thanks for your time Kevin, we appreciate the effort but we think it's time for the team to go in another direction.

Unless you've given up on the season
it's probably best to hold on to Byrnes for now.
