Randy Johnson will have surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back next Friday and will miss the rest of the 2007 season. Arizona manager Bob Melvin said that after talking with Johnson today that the left-hander intends on pitching again in 2008 and the club expects that with the surgery taking place sooner rather than later, Johnson could be a full participant during Spring Training.

Johnson had a similar surgery performed last October and said at that time he was told there was a 5 percent chance that he could herniate the disc again. That's what happened as an MRI taken in June showed the disc was herniated. The plan was to try to pitch through the pain, but in the end it was simply too tall a task.

too bad

It's really too bad RJ is done. He would have been a huge pick up down the stretch. But, I do have to say, all this does is make me appreciate him more. Sounds like he could have packed it up a month + ago. Hope to see you in good form again in '08, Big Unit!

Seems to me this 1) prevents us from trading Livan; 2) puts a good deal of pressure on our fill-in possibilities: EdGon, EnGon, Owings, and Nippert. 2 of those 4 have got to step it up.

This also clarifies the Hairston trade for me. If Nippert of EdGon move out of the bullpen, we'll need another arm in the pen. Not many arms left in Tucson these days!

Couple of possible relievers

Jailen Peguero might be the most likely candidate to get the call-up. A 2.12 ERA in Tucson is very good, and his K:BB ratio is 57:21, though he wasn't that impressive in his previous stint. Adam Bass (2.16) and Chad Harville (2.39) are other possibilities, it seems.

He is a walks machine at the major league level. I'd actually like someone to explain to me what a 30 year old Tampa reject is doing in our system.

Teams need fillers in the minor leagues, and Harville is performing that task.

He probably deserves one more shot at the majors, but I agree that he has always had control issues. If he gets another call, he should be on an extremely short leash
