Is Livan on the Trading Block?
I'm not sure how many of you read Buster Olney's story about Livan Hernandez on the trading block, but I think, knowing the credibility of the writer and the logic of it, that it could be true.
The article is at http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=2945149&name=olney_buster
A few thoughts:
-Edgar Gonzalez would presumably join the rotation if Livan is traded until the Big Unit returns, when Bob Melvin would be forced to choose between Gonzalez and Yusmeiro Petit. I would personally go with Petit, because of his recent breakout and Gonzalez's effectiveness in long relief.
-Who would we get in return? I assume it would be a power hitting outfielder rather than a prospect, but maybe Jarrod Saltalamacchia, the young catcher for the Braves, would make sense. I think Pat Burrell would make sense, but I don't think the Phils would trade him.
Tell me what you think.

Not much to go on...
Without info on the interested teams, it's difficult to say what we might get in return, however. A summary I read elsewhere of the Insider content said, "the full article doesn't say anything other than him being a possibility because he doesn't fit our team needs because he gives up more runs than we are currently averaging a game. He asserts that a trade to the Mets would make sense because for one, the flying Hernandez brothers can be pitching on the same team, and they can afford to have a guy that gives up some runs because it better matches their team and their style of play. He also recommends the Braves and the Phillies. Olney also suggests that the price won't be much to get him."
No reason we can't trade a pitcher for a pitcher: that worked out pretty well with the Petit for Julio trade, didn't it? :-) But with Livan not here longterm, it certainly wouldn't harm the team to trade him for an offensive rental, even one that isn't here for more than the next few months. A power-hitting right-fielder? I'd not say no to a corner infielder with pop, even if it added to the logjam: because, at the moment, none of Reynolds, Clark, Jackson or a non-100% fit Tracy are really cutting it.

"Some of the names remain the same in the trade rumor mill: Octavio Dotel, Mark Loretta, Ty Wigginton, Jose Contreras, Jon Rauch. Heard a new and interesting name Saturday.
"Livan Hernandez," said a talent evaluator Saturday evening. "I'm surprised that nobody's talking about him, because he's out there [on the trade market]."
The light bulb goes on: great postseason experience, minimal financial obligation (he's making $7 million this season, and his contract runs out at the end of this year), a guy who has always taken the ball (nine straight seasons of 30 or more starts, and he's got 20 starts so far this year). He is not an ace, he gives up a lot of hits, but he will generally keep a good offensive team in games.
The D-backs are fading, have the minor league arms to take his spot in the rotation for the last two months -- and Livan is not really a good fit for them now, anyway, because he is not a shut-down kind of pitcher and they are struggling to score runs. The cost of trading for Hernandez would presumably not be that high.
He makes a lot of sense for a team like Atlanta, or a team like the Mets (where he could team with his brother, Orlando), or maybe the Phillies, although he would give up a lot of homers in their park."

The rumor spreads
Jose Contreras might not be the hottest Cuban pitcher on the trade market. According to officials with two different teams, who asked not to be identified because talks are ongoing, the Diamondbacks have been calling around to see how interested teams would be in Hernandez. Arizona is fading in the NL West and is considering dealing Hernandez (the half-brother of Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez).
The Mets have expressed some interest, as have the Braves and Mariners. Livan Hernandez is not without his flaws. He's already allowed 20 home runs this season in 20 starts. He doesn't throw very hard, and his ERA this year is 4.77. But he is durable. And for a team like the Mets, which has a couple of starters who don't get deep into games consistently, he might make some sense if the price is right. He also might be energized by going to a first-place team and pitching in a pennant race. His history in places like Florida and San Francisco shows he can handle big games.
