Gameday Thread #73: vs Devil Rays, 6/20

James Shields, RHP (6-1, 3.30)
Micah Owings, RHP (4-1, 3.84)

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]

Seeing as one wasn't made so far, I thought I'd better start one here.

So far Owings is looking good having pitched the first 2 innings with only one hit. This might be shocking the Rays somewhat to see a pitcher that can actually get them out, so we'll see if they adjust to this unknown thing the D'backs are throwing at them.

Im thinking that Owings
Is starting to grow on me as a long term starter...^.^

Especially...
Given he'll be making minimum-wage for the next two years. If he can post an ERA below four, we should be all over that like paparrazzi on a Hilton sister.

There is always
That possible 2nd year slump to come though...fingers crossed though, so far, so good.

by AZDarkKnight on Jun 20, 2007 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes it is, I think.
Baseball is generally a streaky game.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Jun 20, 2007 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I just lose myself
in those stats Jim :D, agree what you said about cricket on the radio btw

by Wimb on Jun 20, 2007 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

Out-hitting the Rays
7-1 thus far. Looks like the hitters must have had their cereal before coming to the park.

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

Hold on...
I think the Tampa Bay Devil Rays just showed up at the ballpark

by Wimb on Jun 20, 2007 4:52 PM EDT reply actions

Time for an Owings Homer?
Or is he waiting until he gets the bases loaded one time? :o)

by AZDarkKnight on Jun 20, 2007 4:53 PM EDT reply actions

I think Owings
Deliberately muffs the bunts, so he gets the chance to swing the bat. :-)

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 4:54 PM EDT reply actions

How can we do this to Shields
When we couldnt get close to the 0-8 guy....

by AZDarkKnight on Jun 20, 2007 4:55 PM EDT reply actions

Must be
some of those great scouting reports like the ones found at Yankee Stadium :D

by Wimb on Jun 20, 2007 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

And the hits...
Just keep on coming. Is there anything better than seeing on MLB Gameday, those three little words: "In play, run(s)"?

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 4:57 PM EDT reply actions

Byrnes doesn't like to share the team HR lead.
CY hits his 10th last night, so Byrnes hits his 11th today.

Not that I mind a little competition.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Jun 20, 2007 4:58 PM EDT reply actions

And he's in left...
So that 3-for-3 with a homer will help our LF/Gonzo comparison, which has been struggling a bit of late.

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

It's amazing
Monday's performance would have struggled against a college side. Today, we look like genuine playoff contenders, excelling in every aspect of the game. Go figure.

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 5:00 PM EDT reply actions

That's now
Fourteen unanswered runs we've scored - eight last night, six today.

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

Okay, back to work
And a very small Yahoo window. :-) Later!

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 5:02 PM EDT reply actions

In case anybody is interested,
Shields' ERA just passed Owings': Owings - 3.59 Shields - 3.68

::knocks on wood::

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Me and my big mouth (fingers)
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Frell
Still,if it can be kept to one run.
Do you like string?

Micah
got outta that jam nicely :)

by Wimb on Jun 20, 2007 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

Double play saver
That was almost a big inning for them...

by AZDarkKnight on Jun 20, 2007 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

A little nervous
The Rays have found their hitting shoes too: the sixth has been Owings' downfall the last couple of outings, so hopefully he can keep it to just the one run here.

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 5:30 PM EDT reply actions

Byrnes ...
Is a triple away from the cycle ... My fantasy team is quite happy :)
Listen to me, I got no reason to lie to you, don't make the same mistakes I made when I was young. F- a lotta women kid, not just one woman, a lotta women.

Anyone seen yahoo AZ homepage?
Johnson is listed as 'Tightness in Glute' ... I mean, I suppose that's better then busted back ...

What's with this Japanese dude?
He's streakier then Byrnes ...

Owings gone...
He's now allowed ten runs in the sixth inning this year. That's the same as the first, second, fourth and fifth put together. Peña ends the threat for now, but we appear to have a ballgame again.

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

Internet down today
I can only stay for a couple of minutes before leaving but it is nice to see the Dbacks hitting the ball.

by DiamondbacksWIn on Jun 20, 2007 5:58 PM EDT reply actions

A welcome insurance run
A three-run lead definitely feels better than a two run one. Win Expectancy currently 89.1%.

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 5:59 PM EDT reply actions

Back
Back home..find it a bit less comfy then when i left the radio station :D

Augie Ojeda
might just be my new favorite guy. Representin' all the short dudes out there.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Truly a SHORTstop...
Thank you, I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip your waitresses...

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Here it goes again
6 outs FTW
Do you like string?

by hotclaws on Jun 20, 2007 6:19 PM EDT reply actions

Three outs
Three-run lead. Valverde in for what should be an easy save...

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 6:27 PM EDT reply actions

And there it is
Another W on the board ;)

by Wimb on Jun 20, 2007 6:37 PM EDT reply actions

Game over
Series win, even though only about 1.3 good games by us. :-0 Next up, the rudderless Orioles again...

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 6:38 PM EDT reply actions

Whewww!
At least it was easier on the nerves than yesterday!
Do you like string?

by hotclaws on Jun 20, 2007 6:38 PM EDT reply actions

Hey Jim...
Not to moan...but that lineup is a bit out of date on the main page...Chad is back...officially ;)

by Wimb on Jun 20, 2007 7:04 PM EDT reply actions

Good catch
That's updated, Randy, Medders, Callaspo and Hammock all removed too...

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Elsewhere in the division
Dodgers got crushed by the Blue Jays; Padres getting shutout by the Orioles so far, though I wouldn't buy into that one until the final out. But looking for us to be just half a game back for the off-day. Rockies beat the Yankees again: don't write them out of the division race yet. The Giants, on the other hand...

by Jim McLennan on Jun 20, 2007 11:57 PM EDT reply actions

Indeed
Yup, Jays destroyed LA 12-1, O's snapped their 9 game streak and beat the Pads 7-1. We're now a game behind SD and a game ahead of LA. Let's hope that the Orioles beat SD again tomorrow but don't get any momentum out of it coming into Phoenix on Friday.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Jun 21, 2007 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Better yet...
Standings

Just 1/2 game behind SD, and 1.5 up on LA. If the Orioles beat the Padres tomorrow, we'll be tied for first again. Brewers now have a better record than the Mets, so if the playoffs began today, we'd be facing Milwaukee. Wouldn't mind that...

Y'know, what I said about us seems true for almost any team in the division. On their day, they can all beat anyone - but they're all just as capable of phoning it in.

Well, except for the Giants. They just suck.

by Jim McLennan on Jun 21, 2007 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions

I stand corrected
Yup, 1/2 game behind SD, as of the updated standings.

In regards to your comment about the top 4 NL West teams being contenders, I'm about to post a diary about that.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.
