Julio trade
From Rotoworld...
Diamondbacks acquired RHP Yusmeiro Petit from the Marlins for RHP Jorge Julio and cash.
The Diamondbacks did pretty well here if they managed to dump most of Julio's $3.6 million salary, but as a flyball pitcher, Petit had a better chance of making it as a fourth or fifth starter in Florida than he does in Arizona. He'll almost certainly begin the season in Triple-A Tucson's rotation.
I'm not the biggest Petit fan, but I like this trade for the Dbacks.

William -- How does Petit stack up next to our youngsters: EdGon/EnGon/Eveland/Owings etc...?

Not really a lousy year in 2006
But to answer you briefly, his 2006 really wasn't that bad. He pitched in Albuquerque which is a worse hitters park than Tucson (1.52 homer factor) and a 4.26 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP is not bad. His ERA away from home was 3.20. And he was just 21 last year.
For comparison, Edgar was 3.90 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, Nippert was 4.87, 1.52 WHIP and Owings was 3.70, 1.48 WHIP with Tucson last season.
While I still like Owings, Nippert and Eveland more at the moment, Petit is young (with gaudy K numbers a couple of years ago) and the Diamondbacks can keep him in Tucson to develop. He needs to keep the ball down of course but I think it's a good gamble since the D-backs weren't going to re-sign Julio anyway.

Bullpen
Valverde, Lyon, Medders, Pena and Cruz are locks. Slaten should still be LOOGY despite his horrible Spring.
Are the D-backs going to start with 12 or 13 pitchers with Johnson out?

Marlins, I'm sorry for you (Latin accent)
With as much young talent they have, they are going to have to learn the hard way. Better luck next year Fish sticks.
At this point in time it would be a good deal if we had to throw in a half of his salary (sshhhh)! Home run D-Backs!!!
Bienvenido Peña otra vez y ahora es cuando mi buen!
I was listening to Dodgers live tonight and they were talking about Quentin and Hairston, and they seemed to be more worried about the D-Backs then any other NLW team. I agree with them, the may have another thing coming.

Petit
Having said that I also taped the Rockies game and even though I don't need to continue to fight for Edgar, he is a league or two above Petit. How about his braking balls and fast balls on the hands, especially against righties? I still say the Edgar should be our second best pitcher this year.
Julio has potential and I supose with some work he could be good for the Marlins. I do remember the good days he had with us, such as life, people remember the worse, especially the Mets.
If Petit is going to be a fly ball hitter, yes he has good size and he sort of forces his balls when the rare ocasion exists that they remain low, which if not hit are balls. Petit is still lacking major league stuff and is a great prospect for a trade deal at this point in time

Interesting...
As for Julio, his stats were better for Arizona than I remember him being, but this is one of those deals that works for just about everyone. He'll get to close, we free up salary, and any trade where you swap a reliever for a starting pitcher is generally a pretty solid one from our perspective. We'll see how it develops from there.
Just in case you were wondering, Petit's line in spring this year is:
16 IP, 18 H, 5 BB, 13 K, 11 ER, 6.19 ERA
Nothing immediately there to push Owings out of being the temporary #5 starter, it would seem, especially in the more pitcher-friendly Grapefruit League.

$1 million in cash
Still, that's $1 million less that the Diamondbacks can use to get Max Scherzer signed before draft day.
Here's an interesting comparison...
Petit at 21 years old
(2006 Albuquerque) : 4-6, 4.28 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 96 2/3 IP, 68/20 K/BB, 6.33 K/9, 1.86 BB/9
(2006 Florida) : 1-1, 9.57 ERA, 2.09 WHIP, 26 1/3 IP, 20/9 K/BB, 6.84 K/9, 3.08 BB/9
Pitcher E at 21 years old
(AAA Tucson) : 5-5, 4.88 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 94 IP, 66/25 K/BB, 6.32 K/9, 2.39 BB/9
(Arizona) 0-9, 9.32 ERA, 1.94 WHIP, 46 1/3 IP, 31/18 K/BB, 6.02 K/9, 3.50 BB/9
Pitcher E is of course Edgar Gonzalez back in 2004.
