Julio trade

From Rotoworld...
Diamondbacks acquired RHP Yusmeiro Petit from the Marlins for RHP Jorge Julio and cash.
The Diamondbacks did pretty well here if they managed to dump most of Julio's $3.6 million salary, but as a flyball pitcher, Petit had a better chance of making it as a fourth or fifth starter in Florida than he does in Arizona. He'll almost certainly begin the season in Triple-A Tucson's rotation.

I'm not the biggest Petit fan, but I like this trade for the Dbacks.

Posted a story on the main page, but think we might as well divert discussion to this thread. Depends how much salary we dump, but you can never have too many pitching prospects, so I don't mind it...

huh...
Nice to get a young arm, but not thrilled we had to pay anything for a kid with a lousy year last year in AAA (although a nice track record before that) and with flyball tendencies.  Sorta strange considering who Byrnes has targeted in the past.  Maybe an indication of more faith in the OF... but no matter how much better Byrnes/Young/Q are in the OF compared to last year, they still can't move the walls back.

William -- How does Petit stack up next to our youngsters: EdGon/EnGon/Eveland/Owings etc...?

Not really a lousy year in 2006
I'm doing a detailed summary of Petit; over on my blog of course :P
But to answer you briefly, his 2006 really wasn't that bad.  He pitched in Albuquerque which is a worse hitters park than Tucson (1.52 homer factor) and a 4.26 ERA with a 1.25 WHIP is not bad.  His ERA away from home was 3.20.  And he was just 21 last year.
For comparison, Edgar was 3.90 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, Nippert was 4.87, 1.52 WHIP and Owings was 3.70, 1.48 WHIP with Tucson last season.

While I still like Owings, Nippert and Eveland more at the moment, Petit is young (with gaudy K numbers a couple of years ago) and the Diamondbacks can keep him in Tucson to develop.  He needs to keep the ball down of course but I think it's a good gamble since the D-backs weren't going to re-sign Julio anyway.

Cash or not?
According to Jack Magruder, "The Marlins are expected to pay all $3.6 million of Julio's 2007 contract." Not sure how true that is, since other sources indicate the deal is subject to MLB approval, which typically means we're kicking in a million or more. But if it turns out to be the case that we're not paying a penny, then I am very, very impressed with this trade.

Bullpen
What does the bullpen look like now?

Valverde, Lyon, Medders, Pena and Cruz are locks.  Slaten should still be LOOGY despite his horrible Spring.
Are the D-backs going to start with 12 or 13 pitchers with Johnson out?

You know...
I just wonder what problem biggerunit will find with this deal. Too much salary saved, perhaps?
In my nightmares, I see Brian Bruney...make it stop...

hehe ...
Nothing to add, that just tickled me.
I really need a new quote for the start of the season ...

Marlins, I'm sorry for you (Latin accent)
I heard that they were needy for a closer but what a way to throw away the year, just ask the mets. Julio = adios game. I was expecting them to have a decent season this year. I hope they have a good catcher with decent life insurance too.
With as much young talent they have, they are going to have to learn the hard way. Better luck next year Fish sticks.
At this point in time it would be a good deal if we had to throw in a half of his salary (sshhhh)! Home run D-Backs!!!
Bienvenido Peña otra vez y ahora es cuando mi buen!
I was listening to Dodgers live tonight and they were talking about Quentin and Hairston, and they seemed to be more worried about the D-Backs then any other NLW team. I agree with them, the may have another thing coming.

Still not sure...
How much we're paying. I've read everything from zero to $1.5m. Some sources say the commissioner's office needs to approve this, while Josh Byrnes denies that's the case. Obviously, the less money we hand over, the better.

Petit
I taped the Petit game and observed him being taken out in about 4th and change inning. It was just before his trade to the D-Backs. If you were to rely just on this game it seemed like they knew ahead of time that they were going to deal him for anyone, Julio in this case. They were afraid that he was going to start to get smacked or something. He seemed to be too mechanical, almost like a pitching machine for batting practice. His pitching seemed to get better but luck also seemed to be on his side as his high fast balls were going barely foul over the fence and producing some lucky fly balls. I have been a fan of Petit for a couple of years and think he is a work in progress. Lets see what he can be in the farm.
Having said that I also taped the Rockies game and even though I don't need to continue to fight for Edgar, he is a league or two above Petit. How about his braking balls and fast balls on the hands, especially against righties? I still say the Edgar should be our second best pitcher this year.
Julio has potential and I supose with some work he could be good for the Marlins. I do remember the good days he had with us, such as life, people remember the worse, especially the Mets.
If Petit is going to be a fly ball hitter, yes he has good size and he sort of forces his balls when the rare ocasion exists that they remain low, which if not hit are balls. Petit is still lacking major league stuff and is a great prospect for a trade deal at this point in time

Interesting...
Good to hear from someone who has actually seen him pitch, which puts you ahead of me! He does have a reputation of being a fly-ball pitcher, which sets alarm bells ringing as far as playing at Chase goes. Certainly hope Edgar is our second-best pitcher, given I picked him up late in our fantasy draft. But I'm optimistic there: he's certainly going to get the chance to show what he's got this season.

As for Julio, his stats were better for Arizona than I remember him being, but this is one of those deals that works for just about everyone. He'll get to close, we free up salary, and any trade where you swap a reliever for a starting pitcher is generally a pretty solid one from our perspective. We'll see how it develops from there.

Just in case you were wondering, Petit's line in spring this year is:
16 IP, 18 H, 5 BB, 13 K, 11 ER, 6.19 ERA
Nothing immediately there to push Owings out of being the temporary #5 starter, it would seem, especially in the more pitcher-friendly Grapefruit League.

$1m cash kicked in
According to Nick Piecoro:
For the record, the amount the Diamondbacks sent to the Marlins in the Julio deal is $1 million. That’s what the Sun-Sentinel reported yesterday and what has been confirmed. The commissioner’s office has to approve any deal greater than $1 million. This is just a guess, but maybe the reason there was some miscommunication about whether it needed approval was because the number is exactly $1 million. Apparently the Diamondbacks and Marlins were in touch with the commissioner’s office regarding the deal, but the money changing hands didn’t require approval

$1 million in cash
That seems a lot for a buy-low prospect like Petit.  Of course the glass half-full viewpoint is that the Diamondbacks saved $2.6 million.
Still, that's $1 million less that the Diamondbacks can use to get Max Scherzer signed before draft day.

Here's an interesting comparison...
Petit at 21 years old
(2006 Albuquerque) : 4-6, 4.28 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 96 2/3 IP, 68/20 K/BB, 6.33 K/9, 1.86 BB/9
(2006 Florida) : 1-1, 9.57 ERA, 2.09 WHIP, 26 1/3 IP, 20/9 K/BB, 6.84 K/9, 3.08 BB/9

Pitcher E at 21 years old
(AAA Tucson) : 5-5, 4.88 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 94 IP, 66/25 K/BB, 6.32 K/9, 2.39 BB/9
(Arizona) 0-9, 9.32 ERA, 1.94 WHIP, 46 1/3 IP, 31/18 K/BB, 6.02 K/9, 3.50 BB/9

Pitcher E is of course Edgar Gonzalez back in 2004.

Very, very interesting...
If Petit turns out as well as Pitcher E looks to be heading towards [wow, that clause violated several basic grammatical laws, didn't it?], we should be fine. Was EdGon as much of a flyball pitcher? We probably don't have the stats on that.
