Dbacks get Haren, deal Valverde

Deserving of its own diary, I feel. News breaking today - finally - involving Haren:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/12/14/SPQTTUU9P.DTL&tsp=1

(12-14) 14:49 PST -- The A's have completed a trade to send Dan Haren to the Diamondbacks along with pitcher Connor Robertson, The Chronicle has learned.

In exchange, Oakland will receive a total of six prospects, including outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and left-handers Brett Anderson and Greg Smith. Arizona's first-round pick in 2006, pitcher Max Scherzer, is not a part of the deal.

More news coming, I'm sure, but I don't see anything on MLB.com or the Republic or Yahoo...

The other part of the shoe has dropped. Valverde to Astros :( That one also gives the names of the other players involved in the A's trade.

SO, looks like this is what we did today:

  • OUT
  • Jose Valverde (Astros)
  • Alberto Callaspo (Royals)
  • Carlos Gonzalez (A's)
  • Brett Anderson (A's)
  • Greg Smith (A's)
  • Dana Eveland (A's)
  • Aaron Cunningham (A's)
  • Chris Carter (A's)

    IN

  • Dan Haren (A's, ML)
  • Chris Burke (Astros, ML)
  • Chad Qualls (Astros, ML)
  • Juan Gutierrez (Astros (ML/AAA)
  • Billy Buckner (Royals, ML/AAA)
  • [Edit: plus Connor Robertson (A's, ML/AAA)]
  • Hmmm....

    Chronicle's usually right
They've got good sources, and of course this was rumored for a while, so I hope it's gone final.

Haren is an amazing pitcher, and we need him more than we need CarGon. At the moment, I'm thrilled with this.

    I'm just a little nervous
because the breaking news is so new that no one else (that I can tell) has picked it up.  I'm sure it's true but I'd like to know who else was shipped off.

Good move for you guys, I've been a fan of Haren since his Cardinals days. As for us purple/black loyalists... all I can say is, I hope Haren's flyball tendencies catch up with him in the Bank (much more of a hitter's park than the Oakland Coliseum...) because I for one am not relishing the idea of a Haren/Webb twosome on the other end of the NL West stick that we'll be fighting you guys for...

    And what did we do?
Signed Luis Vizcaino, missed out on Tad Iguchi, and if we're extremely hexed, will end up with Clint "Venison" Barmes as our starting 2B.

Who needs young, cheap, cost-controlled All-Stars like Haren when you can sign Kip Wells, who was all by himself an unholy triumvirate of suck, who might work or might hemorrhage away countless games like Chacon used to do?

    True
We also still have Francis, Cook, and Ubaldo Jimenez, who will be an ace, and Brandon Hynick and Greg Reynolds waiting in the wings. Still, if you guys get Haren and we get Kip Wells, there's a disparity here that I dislike... the competition will be stiff in the West next season.

    farm system?
How deep is your farm system, Silver?  I love Jiminez... what's the upside on Hynick and Reynolds?  The Rox have become quite the recyclers of washed up talent.  Kip Wells and Mark Redman fit right into the Rox profile of taking a chance on guys like Herges, Affeldt, Kim, Mesa, Julio, etc.

Didn't work out too poorly for you last year, either, with Herges and Affeldt particularly paying dividends.

But I can't say I have much hope for you in the likes of Wells and Redman.

Vizcaino is a very decent addition... but the only good move you've made yet.

The Carter acquisition was for Oakland... eh hehehe

"The D-backs completed a deal to acquire right-handers Dan Haren and Connor Robertson from the A's in exchange for six prospects, it was announced Friday afternoon.

In addition, the D-backs sent closer Jose Valverde to the Astros in exchange for infielder Chris Burke and right-handers Chad Qualls and Juan Gutierrez.

Included in the trade to Oakland are pitchers Brett Anderson, Greg Smith and Dana Eveland along with outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Aaron Cunningham and first baseman Chris Carter."

Acquiring Haren and selling high on Valverde, I love it!!

by NGOChocolate on Dec 14, 2007 6:59 PM EST reply actions

    It all makes sense, now...
Man, JByrnes outdid himself on this day.

First, the Valverde deal. I love it. You toss Valverde, who, while effective this year and 05, looked horrible in 06, for the remarkably consistant Qualls, who slots right into the 7th inning, get a reasonable prospect (4th in the Astros system according to BA) who held the PCL to a 4.15 ERA in Gutierrez, and a decent utility guy in Chris Burke, who looked pretty damn good in 06. I'd almost take Qualls for Valverde straight up, if only to lower my blood pressure. Gotta think this, if not a clear win for us, fits into JByrnes' ptiching strategy.

Second, the Callaspo deal. When you're able to keep Bonifacio and deal for Burke, 2B is not your problem, ODawg contract discussions notwithstanding. You flip a guy not in our short or long term plans for a guy in Buckner who can help in the bullpen today, or start at the back end of the rotation soonish. That's a win in my book.

Third, the Haren deal. We all love Haren, and rightfully so. Three years of ace-like quality at a huge discount? Seriously? Go us! But 6 prospects makes you wonder... However, notice the lack of any major league guys, the lack of Scherzer, Parker, or Bonifacio. I'm happy that the system wasn't fully gutted. Yeah, Cunningham and Carter look like studs, but they were virtually free to acquire and we're set long term at 1B and the OF. As for Eveland; Gutierrez, Buckner, and Petit make him redundant. Smith is a solid prospect, and I hope he doesn't blossom in Oakland, but I think I'll live with out him. The loss of CarGon and Anderson hurt, but Anderson is supposed to pale in comparison to Parker, and again, we don't need an outfielder in the short or long term. I call it a win, but time will tell; I actually regret losing Smith...

In all, this fits perfectly with JByrnes' operating MO. Gotta be excited to be a D-Back fan today...

I was thinking of the younger Chris Carter, the one we got for Carlos Quentin, who didn't have a place to start in our outfield, from the Sox. The comment was predicated around the fact that the DBacks needed Danny Richar and Carlos Quentin like Roger Clemens needs to work on his HOF entry speech.

Think of this 5 man rotation
Webb, Haren, Davis, Johnson (if he is healthy), and Owings with a year of experience under hit belt.  The Petit Unit can fill in for RJ if he can't get healthy and go in the 5 spot.  Either way this is the best rotation in the NL!

by DiamondbacksWIn on Dec 14, 2007 8:18 PM EST reply actions

    Better yet...
Webb, Haren, Davis, Johnson and Kuroda. ;-) With Owings playing first-base and taking the mound as necessary... But, yeah, major, major upgrade that should keep us competitive.

The Valverde deal, I think that was a nice move and a good dump of a pitcher that's not a lock to be a top closer.

    Hello Chris, ByeBye ODawg?
For me, the most intriguing name in the Valverde trade is Chris Burke. His acquisition really doesn't make sense unless you assume he's going to take over for Hudson at second until Bonifacio is ready. He doesn't hit nearly well enough to play the outfield, especially for the D'backs.  He doesn't hit as well as O.H., nor is he as good in the field.  But he is a whole lot cheaper.  Thoughts?

by fjm235 on Dec 14, 2007 8:24 PM EST reply actions

    Replace Hudson?
No, I can't see it. He has a career OPS+ of 80, and will be 28 by Opening Day next year, so it's not likely that he will improve much. If he's replacing anyone, it's Alberto Callaspo.

by Jim McLennan on Dec 14, 2007 9:45 PM EST up reply actions

    Superutility player
This way, Chad Tracy doesn't have to play the outfield. Burke is a former shortstop who has experience up the middle and in the outfield. He gives you flexability off the bench. Besides, I think JByrnes' remembers that Webb needs a defensive machine in the infield due to all the groundballs.

I think we lock Hudson up, or we're REALLY sold on Bonifacio; either way, I don't see Burke as a long term 2B option for us.

our win differential is more important than your run differential...

    roller coaster day
I looked at the Mitchell report this morning, and the Haren trade is about the only news that could have cheered me up. (On page 95, while talking about Cabrera, the report singled out my 2000 El Paso Diablos: "As a result of the investigation, the security department learned that players with the El Paso Diablos, a minor league affiliate of the Diamondbacks, regularly crossed the border into Mexico to purchase steroids." Feh.)

Valverde always scared me, but I had to admire his luck. In El Paso, he made a wild pitch once with a guy on third base. The ball flew past the catcher, hit the concrete base of the backstop and bounced back right at the catcher, who caught it, spun around and put out the runner trying to get home. Amazing. Wonderful. But not something you want to rely on.

    Rotation for the Ages
I really like this trade a lot.  There is certainly risk involved, as Haren has had some injury issues in the past, but with a little luck, I really think that the Webb/Haren/Unit/Davis/Owings group could really make history.

I'm not very familiar with the guys from the Astros, but I think for my sanity and well being, it'll be good for Valverde to be gone.  I will continue to root for him as an individual player though forever.

That being said, I utilized that philosophy with BK Kim...and that led to some painful moments.

You forgot Conner Robertson in the "Players In."  So we gave up 8 players and got 6 players back.  Wow.

by FatLeprechaun on Dec 14, 2007 9:24 PM EST reply actions

    Edited and corrected
Robertson has a 2.80 ERA over 228.1 innings in the minors. Particularly impressed with his K:BB ratio, a meaty 305:91 over his career there. He could be challenging for a bullpen slot out of spring training.

Well, I missed all of that this afternoon...
snakecharmer hasn't been around much, but when she shows up, she brings the fireworks. :-) A mere diary is not sufficient for this news, no, madam. And I think the 'Look back at our Outfield Projections' can be canned for today and tomorrow as well in the light of this, rather more topical news.

In-depth reports on all three of today's deals in due course, naturally. My first instincts, though, are that all three trades mesh into this team making a statement that The Future is Now. The next three years, in fact, would appear to be the window of opportunity, with Webb and Haren at the front of the rotation. Beane pretty much raped the farm system, however - that's the #1, #3, #7 and #8 prospects gone from Baseball America's list. Speaking of lists, I hope no-one had a #47 shirt on their Christmas one...

I'm going to say that right now, it's between Qualls and Pena.  I'll lean towards Pena, but Qualls is a very good (and highly underrated) pitcher also.  I think you could also make an argument for Lyon.  Of course, I'm rooting for Cruz :)

I was wondering the same thing....
Cruz is so good the first time through the lineup, and he's a K machine... why not give him a chance to earn the now-vacant closer's job?

I really hope the Valverde trade turns into the same kinda trade for us as Billy Beane's trade of either Keith Foulke or Jason Isringhausen (I forget which one) -- the year after he was traded, he imploded. Of course, he also bounced back eventually.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

    OK
I've made up my mind early on this.  If you consider it as one gigantic trade, I think that we've done extremely well.

I'm not crazy about us giving Greg Smith AND Brett Anderson, but at the same time I'm not sure if they'd ever be impact pitchers.  Likewise, I'm not crazy about us giving up on Callaspo, but I'm hoping that the idea is that we go after Hudson, which I like.

I've stated my case against Haren and I still don't believe that he'll be as good here as he was in Oakland, but there's worse pitchers you can have on your team.  He's relatively cheap, which is rarely a bad thing.

I don't see any reason to bring Burke to Arizona.  Yes, he's a nice bench guy, but if it's between Burke and Callaspo, I'd rather have Callaspo.  Oh well.

So, in all, I think JB has done pretty well.  People that shouldn't have been traded (Parra, Parker, Scherzer, Upton, Young, Jackson) weren't and we've improved the team.

Our farm seems to be greatly depleted as a result, though nothing a few good drafts can't fix. Which is not a given though.

Well this is the best time to go for a win now approach anyway, and at a relatively low payroll too. The questions would only come after 3 seasons, where arbitration starts for a lot of our players and the contracts for our aces end.

    Haren Wore Down
nihil, do you realize how good Haren is?  His overall numbers look fine (15-9, 3.07).  But in fact he was MUCH better than that.  Thru Aug. 16 he was 13-4, 2.54.  To put that in perspective, Brandon Webb was 13-8 and 2.63 after just completing his 42-inning scoreless streak.

But that's not all.  At that point Haren had had 26 starts and 24 of them were Quality Starts.  (Webb had "only" 17 QS out of his first 26.)  Haren's only 2 bad games came vs. the Bronx Bombers. His ERA against them: 6.97.  Against everybody else:  2.15.

So how come he went 2-5 down the stretch?  Quite simply, they wore him out.  On August 16 he threw 121 pitches. That came after 113 and 109 pitch outings.  It was too much.  He managed only one QS in his next 5 games, going 1-3 and 6.59.  Remarkably he came back after that to post 3 straight QS's and a 2.70 ERA to close out the season, although his record was only 1-2.  So outside of that one bad stretch he not only outpitched Webby but Jake Peavy as well!  As it was he tied Peavy with 28 QS.  Webb finished in a 5-way tie for 11th with 22.

The last time the D'backs had 2 aces heading their rotation was 2001.  Now if RJ is healthy...

    Randy
I have to agree with that brief bottom mention of Johnson. If he performs even remotely close to how he pitched during 2007, and we hope for 25 starts, I can't even fathom this rotation for next year. Wasn't it just two years ago we were throwing out Webb and Batista, and whatever filler we had to go behind them?

It may be an exaggeration, but this is the happiest I've been about the Diamondbacks since 2001.

by isoldout on Dec 15, 2007 2:27 AM EST up reply actions

    quick side note
I just had to add that the last time we had two aces technically was 2003 but they both ended up having off/injury riddled years.  So the last great year with 2 aces was 2002, where they both pitched better than they did in 2001.

by frienetic on Dec 18, 2007 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

    Wow
Didn't see that one coming.  My guess is this trade was waiting for the Mitchell report to drop, then.  Really unbelievable stuff.

I'm a huge fan of both trades.  Particularly of the Valverde trade.  Qualls is really underrated, hurls in a hitters' park, and is under contract (only $400K this year) until 2011.  Beautiful.  I never liked Burke, but I think he was swapped for Callaspo since he's more flexible in the field.  He also has a bit more speed and HR potential.  Seems like a savvy organizational move.

The Haren deal is not quite the coup that the Valverde deal was, but still a solid trade.  I actually think it serves both teams well.  For us we get an excellent starter in Haren who will provide a very legitimate #2 starter.  His numbers are slightly inflated because he plays in the Colosseum, but of course he's also playing in the AL.  No question he's a solid #2.  We gave up a lot for him, but nobody who was untouchable, and that is the key.  I think Byrnes is being very savvy to do a quantity for quality deal at this juncture.  We've got the lineup slotted out for the next few years.  There's no reason to pack out the minor leagues.  Of course none of the prospects (Upton, Young, Scherzer, etc) are stone cold locks, but the organizational depth is a luxury that I believe has been utilized by Byrnes for immediate help.

The Dodgers and Rockies have to have to queasy this morning!

    Burke will surprise you
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by Chris Burke next season. Give him a chance. He had a bad shoulder last year and never got his swing going. If he gets to play every day at 2b he could become the heart of this team. I guarantee he won't hit .230 again.

by DiamondDog on Dec 15, 2007 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

This is enough to wake me up!
So we get a good #2 that really improves the rotation and the Padres get an aging Edmonds...

I really am not worried about giving up the prospects that we did, as prospects are all they are so far.

With the pitching market the way it is, I think we will come out smelling of roses - now lets just improve the hitting a little bits guys!

I wonder if this trade will have an impact on Hudson too as looking at that rotation certainly tells me I'd be with a competitor for the foreseeable future.

    Yes!
Getting a legitimate second ace for a handful of prospects. I'll take it.

    So long, Papa Grande.

    Congrats!!!
Now that the D'backs have dealt away that spazz, Valverde, baseball fans around the country might now be able to stomach tuning into Arizona's games and appreciate just how good of a team the D'Backs have!

    But what will
opposing fans hate the D'backs for now?  We need another lightening rod.
    Stay grindy, my friends.

    Exactly Soco!
With the subtraction of Valverde, the D'backs are now a extremely watchable team!  I guess I can root against Stephen Drew, just because his sister plays for the BoSox.

    Eric Byrnes
I seem to remember a lot of people hating his hustle.

    Eric's hustle
makes him very likable.  It makes Eric seem likes he's just an average Joe who's living the dream of playing in MLB thanks to his strong work ethic.

Rest assured, while Valverde's departure makes the D'backs more watchable, with Mark Grace around, they will remain "Watchable - but only with the mute button on."

    paging grover
just was looking a the comments over at Athletics Nation.  The moderator over there -- Nico -- is more positive than the hoards who are throwing themselves off the cliffs.  Trying to restore order, Nico offers this sage piece of wisdom:
"It really doesn't make sense to try to judge this trade now, because it all depends on how well the A's have scouted. Players generally turn out to be better or worse than projected."

That would pretty much cover it, wouldn't it?  Players do, in general, turn out to be better or worse than projected.  Brilliant analysis.  Kidding aside, Nico is right.  These are the types of judges that are impossible to judge when this number of minor leaguers is involved.  In Anderson and Gonzalez they may have two very strong all-star level major leaguers.  If one of them pans out and the other is a good contributor, it's a good deal for them.

Seems to me that more teams are shifting to the quantity approach with the minor leaguers in these trades with the very top of each team's farm crop being untouchable.

Can I just mention Haren is cute?
And with Valverde gone the attractiveness quotiant has just shot right up.
We will meet in Red 3 at the hour of scampering.

    However...
Both are equally married. And equally fathered, too - I believe Haren's other half popped just this week, in fact.

Not that either fact probably matters much in this case, however. ;-)
