All right.
Time to exceed our expectations. If we manage to score one run this series, I think we'll prove all the experts wrong.

I nominate a CY solo shot as that one run.

Heh
Can you imagine the grieving and crying that will go on if CY leads the game off with a homer?

Let's do this thing!
I'm more than a little unhappy with the start time- it starts at 8 my time, I have to be up at 5 tomorrow morning, so I'm a little cramped between first pitch and when I need to be asleep.  But I'm excited to see what I can.
I'm not superstitious- it's bad luck.

by kishi on Oct 3, 2007 5:03 PM EDT reply actions

All I've heard the last few days
Is how hard done to the east coast people and Cubs are because of the "late" start.. Guess what? Its the Arizona home game!! We SHOULD be starting at 7pm our time!
Yes again the east coast bias wanting it earlier, when half the home fans here would still be at work.
I am kind of pissed that we are going this early for "east coast" tv.. if they don't like it, then put us all on one time zone!!

by AZDarkKnight on Oct 3, 2007 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Well they could start the games earlier
& you could listen to the Dbacks on Radio...

by cj060896 on Oct 3, 2007 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Which would defeat the purpose
of going going to games.  Yeah, if you're just going to watch it on TV, then the radio is just as a good an option, but it makes a bit messy for those of us with tickets during the week days
Stay grindy, my friends.

by soco on Oct 3, 2007 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Why exactly should they?
Again, it should be our home games to play when we want to the advantage of the home team. I don't see our east coast Sunday games being played later on a Sunday because its a 10am start our time.

by AZDarkKnight on Oct 3, 2007 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Your games all year have started at 9:40
30 Minutes is that big a deal for a playoff game & so it can be nationally televised...I'd say the Cubs & Phillies got the worst of this...Most teams have to compromise come playoff time except the Yankees & Red Sox.  With all the money those 2 team bring to MLB, how can you complain?

by cj060896 on Oct 3, 2007 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Sorry meant to say Phils & Rocks
With start times while people are still at work...at Chase fied will probably have promotional stuff going on between 9:40 & 10:07

by cj060896 on Oct 3, 2007 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

The only reason we get a good start
is because we're playing the Cubs. MLB could care less about the Dbacks. No TV money.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 3, 2007 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Half an hour
The half an hour isn't our fault, it's TBS's. They are allowing 3:30 for each of the two earlier games, at least tonight. Not looking like they'll need it, but it's their tv schedule.

by snakecharmer on Oct 3, 2007 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Start time
...should be adjusted for the HOME team.  Let the East Coasters stay up late or read about it in the paper.  In any case, this game has been so ignored by most of the media that it shouldn't matter to them when it starts.  The "bias" still continues in most of what I've seen -- lots of coverage of the Red Sox.  Let's ignore the media and just win.

Devin, I know somebody who would be glad to text message you each 1/2 inning with updates, if you'd like.   That way you can sleep for up to 15 minutes at a time.

Go DBacks!!

Overconfidant?
I don't know.  I guess I just don't buy into the whole media hype for the Cubs.

Should I feel nervous about this game?  Without wanting to sound overconfidant, I really don't.  We pounded them during the regular season, and I guess with Webb on the mound, I don't see why we won't pound them again.

It's not arrogance, I promise.  I'm trying to look at it logically.

by bcloirao on Oct 3, 2007 5:15 PM EDT reply actions

Pounded....maybe I have a different definition
4-2 with a run differential of -1 with two one-run victory and one 3-0 composite shutout when the game was in play until late in the game while losing two games by 4 runs is not a pounding.

You might be a tad overconfident. Webb is very good, he turned his season around in late July and had a extraordinary August, but Zambrano is just as good, realistically, especially if the late September Zambrano shows up.

It will be a nail biter

by AZDarkKnight on Oct 3, 2007 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

you are correct it is relative
Webb versus Cub batters and Zambrano versus DBack batters....

Webb in a vacuum is better, but this is not a vacuum; but he does have victories over Peavy and Penny.

by Adam1 on Oct 3, 2007 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

Beating Zambrano is easy
All we have to do is have the first 15 batters take at least 6 pitches.  If we go 1-2-3 in each inning, that's 5 innings worth of batters.  Get a couple hits and it's over.

Zambrano's ERA nearly doubles after he's thrown 90 pitches.

Respect
In baseball it only comes with years of production.  This team # next year will be 82 games.  Even ESPN doesn't know much about this team & they've never given them their due credit.  There eyes are always focused on big teams with big names.  The only way this team earns respect is to beat some good teams in a pressure situation & get to the playoffs.  I due think it's a great team, but if they don't get there many will think it was a lucky year...until next year of course.

and which years of production exactly
have earned the Cubs respect? I have the answer for that.. ZERO..

by AZDarkKnight on Oct 3, 2007 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Big names?
Zambrano? the only thing big about him is his mouth
Lilly? yeah right...
Soriano? The spoilt child who wouldnt play for a team when his defence was too poor for the IF
Pinella? I will give you that one

by AZDarkKnight on Oct 3, 2007 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Those are very big names excluding Lilly
Not names you & I know know.  ESPN & Vegas is all about names PEOPLE know.  I've watch all year most of the highlights that come out of Arizona are Tony & Eric.  Lately Brandon & Valverde, but that took leading the lead in saves & Brandon's 2ND suberb year.  For the first 130 games you had to watch ESPN for 57 minutes to catch the highlights for DBack games.

People know Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, & Zambrano can be great.  They are not going to pick a team with a bunch of .250 hitters they've never heard of on a team that gave up more than they scored.  Most of them don't even know who Brandon Webb is.  Look at the $$$.  Those are the players that get the publicity.  Publicity = People's confidence.  Look at Football it's the same thing.  Big teams that pay big $$$ with have more players the public knows...those team will always get more action against teams the public does not know even if there record is better.

by cj060896 on Oct 3, 2007 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, lets talk about $$$$
Ok, the biggest payroll in NL is in the play..oh right, they aren't here are they..

The biggest payroll in baseball won it last..oh thats right, they haven't won in years..
These big names you speak of were sub 500 for a large part of the season and only in fact got here because of an appalling division and even though they played so many more games against these poor teams, only won 85 games..
as I said, people know Zambrano coz of the way he boasted how he would walk away with the cy young, soriano as he refused to play outfield for Washington and coz he was once a Yankee.
High spending teams that shout about their teams will be known more by joe public, but lets get back to the point shall we? that was the sports "PRESS" talking about the teams, people who work on this for a living, If all these professionals do is listen to "hype" then they don't deserve to be employed. Vegas was never mentioned until you just brought it into the conversation nor was it about the "public" but about the sporting professionals who should know better.

by AZDarkKnight on Oct 3, 2007 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

As ye sow...
So shall ye reap. It's something of a vicious circle. ESPN talks about the big clubs, so that's who people hear about, so that's how they're interested in, so that's who ESPN talk about. Hard to say which came first.

Vegas, of course, bases the odds purely on the amount of money laid down. There's no doubt the Cubs will be a popular betting choice, due to their huge fanbase. The odds reflect that, and are largely independent of the actual teams' qualities.

As for payroll, it certainly helps over the course of a season, but once you reach the playoffs, it's an entirely different ball-game. Literally.

by Jim McLennan on Oct 3, 2007 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Right On
Not sure the reasoning why ESPN is bias, but they are...  I respect there opinion a lot, but read forums like collegefootballnews & freewinners.com....you will see ESPN really only has a good grasp on big market teams.  There analysis otherwise is subpar; if this wasn't true everyone who bets sports would be winners...

Though the motto over there appears to be something along the lines of winning in 4.  I can't fault them too much for believing their team will win.  Don't we all?  But the asshattery of flaming another team's fanbase for having the same believe gets under my skin.

Not that far off
We've had many 3 game losing streaks.
Zambrano can throw a great game & Webb does have bad outings.  The Cubs can hit anyone & are good low ball hitters.  If they steal game 1.  There #2 & #3 are better than ours.  Davis & Hernandez can be horrible.  I feel soft tossers can often struggle in the playoffs against better hitting teams while power pitchers seam to thrive off the adrenaline...Foulke, Hoffman, Davis, & Hernandez.  I do think the Dbacks will win the series, but make no mistake; this team can be swept.  Put Webb, Micah, Gonzalez at the front; ironically I think one of them would dominate & win a game for us; not so with Webb, Davis, & Hernandez.

by cj060896 on Oct 3, 2007 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure, "can" be.
I don't think anyone has said they "can't." But the idea that we'd predict something other than a Cubs sweep being so ludicrous is what amuses me to no end. The gall of thinking your favorite team might win a playoff game against such a top contender.

On a separate note, I'm tired of hearing about how the Cubs were one of the hottest teams in the second half. The Diamondbacks finished 40-21, and that was despite all but giving up the last two against the Rockies. The Cubs had a solid June and July, but they were a whopping one game over .500 in August and September.

Both teams had good second halfs. Anyone playing up the Cubs' as somehow being an advantage in this series is an idiot.

Bonafacio and Quentin
are the two left off the roster.  Disappointed to see Callaspo chosen over Bonafacio.  There's nothing Callaspo adds to this team.  Honestly.  At least Bonafacio is a great pinch runner.

But I was glad to see Melvin add Nippert to the pen.  That could pay dividends in case of a 1) blow-out; 2) rain delay; 3) injury.

by johngordonma on Oct 3, 2007 8:12 PM EDT reply actions

Yep
I fealt Bona earned this spot especially after the negativity Callapso brought earlier in the year...I don't feel he played well enough to regain his spot either at any time.  Quentin had MORE than his share of opportunities.  While I'm a Quentin fan, you can not fault Melvin for this move.  I don't like Nippert...if a guy is there for those 3 things; bring a positive force & deal with those things as they come; I'd maybe rather have Quentin & an extra pinch hitter.  Don't forget you can add a person now when someone goes down with an injury.

Well
Great game! I didn't feel nervous at all for our team until a little at the end when Valverde had the tying run at the plate and then Soriano grounded out and we won!!!  Saw lots of Cubs fans but the vast majority were D-Backs fans.  Also, it seemed that ever Cub fan I saw were carrying two beers, probably because most of them were in the upper reaches of the building.

Actually, isn't Zambrano supposed to pitch in Game 4?  That's the game we have Owings.  Hopefully, the good Doug Davis, the decent Livan and the hot-hitting and pitching Micah Owings make us proud in Games 2, 3 and 4.

Let's hope the back-end

by peachy rex on Oct 4, 2007 5:07 AM EDT up reply actions

The really sad thing is...
Zambrano isn't even the Cubs' best pitcher. Lilly is, and Hill's right up there. Lou should KNOW that; yet, he keeps feeding this BS in the media and in Zambrano's head that he's the next Randy Johnson.

Lou's a good manager, but that's just STUPID. Then again, if he used any other pitcher twice, Zambrano would probably throw a hissy fit and punch the other guy.

Byrnes
Would you deny all those millions the Dbacks offered him.  It's not like he was holding out on them or threatening them.  He was the big reason I had faith in this team.  He breeded enthusiam & winning in Oakland & I believe he's done the same here.  He never was a .300 hitter, the beginning of the season when he helped carry them was a bonus.  He is a .260 - .285 hitter that helps you in so many other ways.  He's going through a spell, but he is still an all out guy doing his best & he's helped most of this team do the same.  This team is reaching it's full potential because of him.  Like Clemens was to the Yankees you only need 1 attitude to change a clubhouse.

"ONE SONG CAN SPARK A MEMORY, ONE FLOWER CAN WAKEN DREAMS
ONE TREE CAN START A FOREST, ONE BIRD CAN HERALD THE SPRING
ONE SMILE CAN START A FRIENDSHIP, ONE HANDCLASP CAN LIFT A SOUL
ONE STAR CAN GUIDE A SHIP AT SEA, ONE SPEECH CAN SET A GOAL
ONE VOTE CAN CHANGE A NATION, ONE SUNBEAM CAN LIGHT A ROOM
ONE CANDLE CAN ERASE THE DARKNESS, ONE LAUGH CAN CHASE THE GLOOM
ONE STEP MUST START EACH JOURNEY, ONE WORD MUST START EACH PRAYER
ONE HOPE CAN RAISE THE SPIRITS, ONE PRAYER CAN SHOW YOU CARE
ONE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND THAT ONE IS YOU
INDIVIDUALLY AND COLLECTIVELY, YOU CAN, YOU DO."

Eric Byrnes is more of a catalyst than Tony Clark; TC is just taking the credit.  1st half of the season he was just a great guy, now he's 1/2 a 1st baseman too.

Congrads to Drew, not his 1st big home run, but maybe a great post season can turn him around???  I don't know what else could?

by cj060896 on Oct 4, 2007 4:21 AM EDT reply actions

Just saw appalling ESPN clip
(I believe BBTN) in which the host starts off :

"Diamondbacks victorious in their first attempt, now, back in the post-season of course since Schilling and company were there winning a World Series for Arizona."

Now, I know the '02 team got swept in the NLDS, but they won the West, they won ninety-eight games... I mean, dear god, just how incompetent can ESPN be?  Do they not have a research staff capable of navigating their own website?  When I reflect that this is the 'world-wide leader in sports,' I despair, I really do.

by peachy rex on Oct 4, 2007 5:29 AM EDT reply actions

'Worldwide Leader in Idiocy'
It must be a conglomerate-wide thing, because like I said, when they were advertising the radio broadcast for the Cubs-Dbacks game yesterday on ESPN radio, they mentioned that "the Dbacks are in the playoffs for the first time since winning the 2001 World Series".

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

What a way to wake up!
Had to miss the game (these 10pm start times really aren't feasible with a 4 and a 23 month old)... Enjoyed the 800+ comments here... looks like the D'Pit ladies, Jim, and Phil held us up through the night.

Onto game 2!  I love the pressure this puts on Lilly and the Cubs.  Every expert has pointed to this match up as being the big Cub advantage.  If we can win this one, the Cubs will be in DEEP trouble.

by johngordonma on Oct 4, 2007 6:42 AM EDT reply actions

800+?
We'll go well over 900 before the next game begins.

I don't quite understand all the media's obsession with the Cubs, nor with this game. Doug Davis already BEAT Ted Lilly this year at Chase (3-1) on CoJack's homer, and not only was Double D more solid his last time out, (2 runs in 5 innings, 3.80 ERA) but he's had extra rest to work his mechanical issues out and get some life back in his arm.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Woohoo
Love that feeling when you wake up for work all groggy and tired, and you get to the office and you find we've won :D

Now I can happily spend the day reading all the recaps and perspectives ;)

Nice
That's a pretty good box score to wake up to.
I'm not superstitious- it's bad luck.

by kishi on Oct 4, 2007 7:05 AM EDT reply actions

It sure is
I managed to get through the first 3 innings and then fell asleep, Can't wait for the weekend games though, as I'll rock on through them.

Just reading
Through all of the stuff on MLB, its amazing how many articles they can write on just 1 game....

by Wimb on Oct 4, 2007 8:39 AM EDT reply actions

Well its the playoffs
They try to pick apart virtually everything they can get their hands on.

Anyway I was quite annoyed with the large numbers of articles blaming Pinella for removing Zambrano.. Everyone seems to think that the game was gifted to the Dbacks.. Tsk tsk >:(

by singaporedbacksfan on Oct 4, 2007 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

totally agree
haven't heard once anyone mention what Ben mentioned earlier, that is the fact that Zambrano's ERA balloons after 90 pitches.  Seems to me Pinella did exactly the right thing.  Everyone forgets what a stud Marmol has been.

by johngordonma on Oct 4, 2007 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

The Marmot's been a stud...
...but he's also a rookie, pitching in his first postseason. Not sure that I would go to him after Zambrano.

Then again, for whatever reason, Lou likes to play his good relievers first, then his shitty ones. (COUGH Dempster COUGH) That'd be like if we had Jose Valverde pitch the 7th, Juan Cruz pitch the 8th, and DNip as our closer.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 4, 2007 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Or
Jose Valverde in the 7th, Pena in the 8th and then pick up Joe Kennedy off waivers to close the game.
Stay grindy, my friends.

by soco on Oct 4, 2007 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

So true
One Chicago article said that Zambrano was dealing and the Diamondbacks were reeling when Z was removed after 6 innings.  Huh?  The score was 1-1 and the D-Backs were reeling?  Were we watching the same game?

by TwinnerA on Oct 4, 2007 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Reeling with the same amount of hits, no less.
Both teams had four through six innings. Silly media.

by Azreous on Oct 4, 2007 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

They sure as heck blamed him at BCB.
I thought it made sense, given that Lou wants to use Zambrano in game 4, and the Marmot's been money all year, but some of the BCB people made the point that this isn't the regular season, and Zambrano was ballin', so maybe Lou should have left him out there. ::Shrug::
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

You want to win tonight, Melvin?
I have 6 words for you.  Put. Micah. Owings. In. Right. Field.

by nihil67 on Oct 4, 2007 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

Micah
should actually be the starter of this game and without a doubt should have been the starter of game 3.

by johngordonma on Oct 4, 2007 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

You know
I hadn't thought of that, but it certainly makes sense.  Davis does actually have really good numbers vs. the Cubs and in Wrigley in his career.

by nihil67 on Oct 4, 2007 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

If we have a 2-0 lead after tonight,
I'd like to see how Livan does, being in the postseason again. If it's 1-1, I'll feel a little more squeamish.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 4, 2007 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Good point...
I don't know the stats like Jim aka Mr. Almanac but it seems that Micah pitches much better at home.  And as you said if Davis has done well in Wrigley ..well, then it's elementary Watson.  I'm just happy I got a signed Micah rookie card for my birthday. :)

by batster on Oct 4, 2007 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Kinda
His ERA is better at home, but his winning percentage is better on the road.  It's pretty evely split, I think.

Surprisingly, he's much better hitter on the road, but I think those stats are skewed.

by nihil67 on Oct 4, 2007 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Well it was at Chase
that Davis beat Lilly 3-1 this year, so we'll see what happens. History DOES repeat itself sometimes.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 4, 2007 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

So... if you listened to the media today,
you'd know the truth: The Dbacks simply tripped and fell on the way to the "Getting Swept By The Cubs" Party. We'll still get there; we'll just be fashionably late.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 4, 2007 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

awesome game
From section 127 there were no cubs chants that even got going.  EVERY time I heard "let's go cubbies" within a chant or two it was "let's go dbacks".  They were drowned out, taunted, and boo'd.  It was great to be a dbacks fan.  People were even mocking the cubs fans as we left the stadium in the rotunda and out on Jefferson with chants of "one more century" and "go home cubs fans".  The cubs fans looked shell shocked both at the loss and at the fact that they were completely and utterly out numbered.  It was great.

To see the crowd standing with two strikes and two outs made me proud to be a dbacks fan.  Then we stood the entire ninth inning to top it off.  I'm usually one of the only people even cheering in some of this situations..  People do understand baseball here! =)

Go dbacks!

O rly?
You mean it wasn't 95% Cubs fans and 5% Dbacks fans as predicted by Cubs Nation?
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 4, 2007 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Lies
I'm not even 100% sure there was a Diamondbacks game last night.  You sure it wasn't a Cubs/Phillies NLCS game?

by nihil67 on Oct 4, 2007 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I may be a Dbacks fan...
...but all I care about is when the Yankees and Red Sox play.

Yep, that's it.

Oh, and I find the Cubs OH-SO-LOVABLE because they've sucked for nearly a century now. I am truly pulling for them to win.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Did you know the Mets didn't make the playoffs?
I was amazed to hear about it last night while the Mets were playing the Yankees in the world series.

by nihil67 on Oct 4, 2007 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

In all seriousness...
...when do the Patriots play the Red Sox?
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 4, 2007 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Only on PPV.
It's Red Sox and Patriots vs. Knicks and Yankees, in a steel cage. ESPN will have Outside the Lines there for 67 hours to provide coverage.

by Azreous on Oct 4, 2007 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

But what about the Lakers and Cowboys?
Neither of them get ANY coverage.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 4, 2007 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it's funny
That the Saints were "Americas Team" for like 7 seconds.  Now, aside from that one visa commerical, you don't see anyone acknowledging them at all.

by nihil67 on Oct 4, 2007 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

'Saints'? Who are these 'Saints'?
Do they play against the Red Sox and Yankees?
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

In a steel cage?
I believe that match is taking place on Sunday Sunday Sunday!
I'm not superstitious- it's bad luck.

by kishi on Oct 4, 2007 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually
I'd put it at 95% Dbacks fans and 5% Cubs fans and most of them (Cubs fans) were loud and drunk.  One member of the security told me after the game that they were up and down the stairs alot during the game in the upper deck due to drunk Cubs fans.

by TwinnerA on Oct 4, 2007 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Per TBS, they said it was ...
80% DBack and 20% Cubs.  Of course, they were just guessing..  I'm curious about 2001.  What was the makeup of the crowd then?  I know the franchise was young so do you think there are more DBack fans in the stands now?

by batster on Oct 4, 2007 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure if this has been mentioned before...
Tony Clark is keeping a blog during the postseason. Pretty interesting read. Just about what you'd expect from the big guy.

Even that has been beseiged by stupid Cub fans.

I mentioned it to snakecharmer, and I think
she mentioned it in yesterday's Dbacks Daily. There's also a link posted to it in the column along the right side of the page.

Shouldn't have expected any less, I suppose, since she is very thorough with those.
