Gameday Thread, #163: 10/1, Padres vs. Rockies

Jake Peavy (26, RHP, 19-6, 2.36)
Josh Fogg (30, RHP, 10-9, 4.79)

BaseballReference.com preview [opens in new window]

I was talking to my buddy last night and we were discussing who we would be cheering for tonight.

Jim makes a good point that the Padres would have already spent Peavy just to get in, but cheering for the Padres (and their less than stellar blog 'community') does seem wrong.

The Rox are damn hot though and I am not sure facing them in NLCS would be entirely fun.

Either way, I hope the Phillies win as I feel there is nothing worse than winning a division and then the wild card from your division makes it to World Series (if its another team of course....haha)

So check out the poll on the right and lets see who the snakepit wants...

[editor's note, by DbacksSkins] This diary has been promoted, textually unmodified, to an open gameday thread for the Padres/Rockies play-in game. How special they both must feel, having an open gameday thread set up by the Snakepit just for them.

Rockies
I've always liked that organization and I can't find any reasons to cheer against them.  If nothing else, I'm cheering for Helton to get to his first post-season.

I don't think it much matters who wins... I don't see either team getting past the Phillies, but I do think that the Rockies would have the better shot of not only beating the Phillies, but beating us in the NLCS, should we get there.

Well,
I don't think it much matters who wins... I don't see either team getting past the Phillies, but I do think that the Rockies would have the better shot of not only beating the Phillies, but beating us in the NLCS, should we get there.

Agreed, hence I want the Padres to win tonight behind Peavy.

I'd love to see the Rox make it to their second postseason, but uh-uh, not this year.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

There's the added bonus
of not feeling dirty for cheering on the Padres.

That's 6 or 7 showers I won't have to take today, thanks.

Go Rox
Nothing not to like about them... well, maybe Jorge Julio.

Go Rockies.
Their city deserves it more. Sure, I'm biased, but whatever.

Besides, if we have to go through the best to get through the World Series, so be it.

Padres
Even if they beat the Phils, we have shown that we can beat both of their best pitchers.

by Adam1 on Oct 1, 2007 12:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Good point!
We do have a winning record against them; we've done it before, we can do it again.

by snakecharmer on Oct 1, 2007 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love the rockies...
but they are hot offensively right now. If they beat the Phillies in the DS, that means two things: 1, their offense was powerful enough to overcome the Phils offense, and 2, their pitching was powerful enough to overcome the Phils offense. Those two things combined make for a very scary Rockies team. It also makes for a very scary Phillies team but we'll worry about that later!

On the other hand, the Rockies did so much to get here, it would be nice to see them win...

I will feel very weird rooting for the Padres, but if the Rockies win, that's okay with me too.

by snakecharmer on Oct 1, 2007 12:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Whoa whoa whoa...
...what's all this about rooting for the Padres? I'm just rooting for Josh Fogg to give up 10 runs (I figure that might be enough to out-offense the Rockies) and for the Rockies to make enough errors that even the official scorekeepers can't try to pretend they were hits.

I think whichever team wins today will be pretty burned out; the Rockies have had to win 13 of 14 just to have a shot at winning once more and beating the Padres' best pitcher. The Padres, after today, will have played 21 straight days, and 24 of 25. One of these teams is going to run out of gas.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

Nothing against the Padres,
whose fans dont bother me in the least, but as a baseball fan, I'm slightly rooting for the Rockies, since they've been in the dumps so long. Between them, the Phils late surge and the Dbacks & Cubs, there's gonna be one helluva underdog story going into the World Series.

As far as the outcome of today's game impacting the Diamondbacks, I wouldnt worry about it. The more I look at our matchup with the Cubs, the less I like it. We'll be fortunate to advance past Chicago.

by Diamondhacks on Oct 1, 2007 2:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You have a good point there.
Not only are there the individual underdog stories, but the NL contenders then have the added storyline of automatically being an underdog to whoever comes out of the AL (and if it's the Yankees or Red Sox, I'm sure everyone will predict a sweep).

by Azreous on Oct 1, 2007 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just like the Cardinals.

Exactly.
We know how east coast-biased most prognosticators are already. You'd think last year's example would still be fresh in everyone's mind, but I doubt it.

by Azreous on Oct 1, 2007 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I might also point out that Detroit...
...is a part of the upper Midwest?

The point remains, though, that the NL pennant winner is an automatic underdog in the WS, (Not getting home field advantage again doesn't help, either) unless the AL pennant winner squeaks by on luck and bad umpiring, and the NL winner blitzes through all opposition, or some scenario like that.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 1, 2007 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you are right
I definitely did not want to look past the Cubs as they are a solid team. My biggest fear at this point is that people from the east coast (or anywhere outside of NL West cities) tune into the games and notice that the NL wins leader is actually playing an away game in Phoenix.

I will be there for 1 of the 2 and I hope the other season ticket holders make it out and don't sell out to Cubs fans. I cannot blame them if they do, but I would still love a loud, Dback faring crowd.

Not to get off topic, but Webb v. Z will be an awesome game one, too bad I am on the road for work (DVR and no outside communication until after I watch the game at 9p)

The folks at Baseball Prospectus are split.
Nate Silver, through Sports Illustrated, looks at the larger context of a 1 game playoff, and gives the edge to Peavy and the Padres. (Sounds like a band) However, Silver also makes one possible error in judgment, in saying "Peavy will be pitching on a full four days' rest, and Hoffman was not used on Sunday; odds are that those are the only pitchers that San Diego will need.". What he neglects to mention, of course, is that Peavy's only gone into the 8th in one game this year; not that Heath Bell is any scrub, though.

Christina Kahrl, on the other hand, breaks the Rockies and Padres down, piece by piece, and ends up surprising herself by taking the Rockies.

It's a toss-up; even the supposed experts can't agree. I still say Colorado losing is better for us.

On another note, is anyone interested in setting up an open thread for the Snakepitters who might be watching the game?

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

[ On another note, is anyone interested in setting up an open thread for the Snakepitters who might be watching the game? ]

I'm sure there'll be enough interest: I probably won't be participating much myself, as I'm going to swing past Rally Monday on the way home. But will certainly be following the game with interest. As for who I want to win, I don't know. My heart says Rockies, my head says Padres, while my gall-bladder is abstaining.

Edit Story, change from 'Publish in Section Only', to 'Publish Entry', then save changes. That should promote it from a diary to a full entry. Let me know if you can't do it though, and I'll get it taken care of. You may want to change the title appropriately too. :-)

I'd love to see the Padres blow it, but the Rockies offense is a bit worrisome, so I don't think I want to see either one win.  Unfortunately, that's statistically unlikely.

Nice though it would be..
For the game to go 200 innings, and both teams to lose their entire rosters to exhaustion before Todd Helton rips his own arm off and uses it to drive the ball out of the park, then finally succumbing, the last man alive... Yeah, that's kinda unlikely. :-)

Any team
is beatable on any given day.  I'd be terrified right now if I was a CO or a SD fan.  Their stomachs must be in knots.  Glad it's them and not us though.

It would be great if one team appeared to be the probable winner in the 9th and then the other team snatch it from them.  Yeah, I know, I'm cruel.

HR
That was a home run; it hit a chair.

I wish there were replay when it comes to HRs. Remember when Washington got that phantom HR off Webby in the second series of the year?

Hard to tell even from the replay if that was a homer or if it hit the yellow line.

It ..
It shot back pretty hard to just hit the pad. I remember when WAS got that phantom HR off Webby. They thought it hit the foul pole, but it really hit some kind of metal object in the corner and shot back.

I think your take on it is right.
It looks like it ducked just over the line and hit that chair, maybe, before richocheting back out.

Without replay, though, the umpiring crew certainly has no way of telling.

Hopefully that doesn't end up being important later on.

Interesting.
Barrett had ridiculously good numbers against Fogg in his career (something like .440 in at least 25 at-bats), so when does Bud Black put him in? As part of a double switch after Fogg is gone.

I'm not saying Barrett's better than Bard, but the timing seems bass ackwards to me.

by soco on Oct 2, 2007 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Has to go over.
The issue was if the ball hit the line or something just behind it. Replays seemed to indicate it had hit a chair or a seat just behind the fence, causing a strange (and sharp) ricochet. But it was almost impossible to tell, even on the replay. Don't know how an umpire ten feet away from the third base umpire (why the hell are they there, anyway?) is supposed to make that call.

Holliday didn't even touch the plate. And the other ball that was ruled a double looked like a home run. And Tulowitzky's errors weren't errors. And the strikezone wasn't really a strikezone, it was a ballzone.

Doesn't Rocks Phan also post there?
Not saying it was him, but there are Rockies fans at SBN...

by snakecharmer on Oct 2, 2007 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well,
they do have at least some cause for suspicion.

I wish they didn't.

by dahlian on Oct 2, 2007 12:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What cause?
Seton hall snake pit posted a dead unicorn over there once... but he hasn't posted there for weeks, and he wasn't even on here tonight.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

It's not like dead unicorn
pictures are something that any random troll would immediately pick up on and use as a taunt to a Padres blog.

Having already done it once, it's only human to assume that the same person is likely to do it again.  For example, if a random person came on and posted a picture of Nomah after a big hit in a game chatter I would immediately assume that it was DodgerBlueBalls coming back under a new account to troll some more.  That is a reasonable assumption to make.  It may not be entirely fair, but that's the price you pay for having already sunk to that level once before.

And I think the value you put on someone not posting here tonight, is a bit high.  Not to mention that it's something that a poster there would never know anything about.

by dahlian on Oct 2, 2007 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They talk about the unicorn on other SBN blogs
But, you have a good point. There's no reason they would notice that he didn't post tonight. (Although a few of them know what his username is over here)

I think if he were online tonight, he would have made himself known here. Besides, they can track not only the email address but the IP address as well. The original IP address of everyone who signs up is logged.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 2, 2007 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Now, here's the rub...
I have no problem with fans of rival teams coming over here and talking smack, as long as it's at least semi-intelligent - which is where out short-lived Padres troll went horribly wrong - or vaguely witty. Put it this way, if someone came here and posted a pic of a dead Penelope Cruz, I'd laugh and be quite impressed.

Rivalries are a part of sport, and I enjoy verbal fencing with like-minded fans. However, as we saw when the first friendly overtures were rebuffed at GLB, some people just do not play well with others. However, having been running websites for more than a decade now, I've learned the hard way, that kind of reaction and attitude encourages trolls, and those who are out to provoke a reaction. Far better, again, to laugh it off and/or ignore it. Though I must say, it is only a small minority of the posters there who take that approach, and are flailing around and lashing out at us.

Oooooh.
Yeah, I see what they were annoyed about now. It was in in their first gameday thread.

Here's an example. Come to think of it, that dead unicorn picture looks awfully familiar. Maybe it IS seton hall...

I still say they oughta just grow a thicker skin, but that's not cool.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 2, 2007 1:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Though that pic is #2
When you Google Images for 'dead unicorn'. And the other one they posted is #6 on the same page. It's not rocket science. ;-)

by Jim McLennan on Oct 2, 2007 1:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's not rocket science,
but to post a dead unicorn and not just some random picture of Todd Helton looking smug is at least indicative of someone with a greater level of familiarity with the site than just some random troller.

It's something rare enough that it's not unreasonable to assume that if someone did it once in the past, they wouldn't do it again in the future.

by dahlian on Oct 2, 2007 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That IS true...
...however, I'm not quite sure why seton hall wouldn't have simply posted under "DodgerHater".
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

by DbacksSkins on Oct 2, 2007 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was going to post that over here in its entirety
Not only is it a bit immature, but I'm not quite sure why they would suspect us, while playing against the Rockies.

However, it sounds as though s/he's got good reason to be upset. I might have advised them to grow a thicker skin, but it's not my blog. But as far as I know, whenever one of us head over there, we always make ourselves known. I'm not quite sure why they don't just ban the person and be done with it.

Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

I was going to reply, but...
There's no point. I understand how, at the moment, they are upset (to put it mildly!) at the way their season ended, and are lashing out against all and sundry, regardless of actual responsibility. Now is not the time for logic and reason: let's just leave them to their angst.

by Jim McLennan on Oct 2, 2007 1:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed,
the misery and pain that they inflict on themselves will always be a hundred times more amusing than anything that we could add.

by dahlian on Oct 2, 2007 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly.
Hence why I'm not going to say a word, here or there.

by Azreous on Oct 2, 2007 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, that...
And I'm too lazy to make an account.

by Azreous on Oct 2, 2007 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just don't like
when we there's something that they can vent their frustrations at other than the lackluster performance of their own ball team - be it us or the umpire.

by dahlian on Oct 2, 2007 1:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's what I was saying.
Great, another umpire blew a call against the Padres. (As if that never happens to any other team) It just gives Padres fans another thing to whine about.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

I'll apologize and condemn it, if there's any sign
it was a Dbacks fan, (as if they'll believe me) but not right now. Going to wait for them to cool off first.
Come on, Sandy Baby, loosen up. You're too tight.

A dead unicorn would piss me off too
It's cruel and disgusting, and coming from us (if it did), that's not cool.

To Pads fans: I apologize from us, you deserve better.

Not me
I just watched both boards all night without butting in.

On Friday
The Padres had a 93.3% chance of playoff baseball, according to CoolStandings.com. Hell, they were even higher, all the way back in June (93.7% on June 7). And now it's gone, gone, gone...woh-oh, woh-oh. :-)

by Jim McLennan on Oct 2, 2007 12:40 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I just wish
that I could read all the GLB threads of self-immolation and not see posts like:

Give the Rox fans this:

they didn't troll us.  (Did they?  Or were you just quick on the draw with the ban button?)

I think the Rox fans are thrilled and surprised to get in, and good for them.  Congrats.  I hope they go all the way over the lame-ass D-backs.

and not think that the guy had a point.  I long for the high road...

by dahlian on Oct 2, 2007 12:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

After the vile travesty
of a playoff team they inflicted on the world in '05, the Padres' angst weighs very lightly on my shoulders.  But I agree with the consensus - a dead unicorn is just gilding the lily.  And I'm opposed to anything that distracts them from the fact that their team had a 93.3% chance at the playoffs with two games left in the regular season... yet they're going to be sitting at home until April.

by peachy rex on Oct 2, 2007 2:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They Padres didn't inflict anything
in 2005.

That they made the playoffs is the DBacks, Rockies, Giants and Dodgers' fault, not theirs.

by dahlian on Oct 2, 2007 2:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, it's not as bad as all that.
"yet they're going to be sitting at home until April."

Not so. Spring training begins in February, and opening day is usually one of the last couple days in March. :-P

Well done Rockies!
I knew they were the team to fear.

Hilarious
I was listening to Doug and Wolf on my way to work and they had a hilarious montage of clips making fun of the Padres.  I almost had to pull over I was laughing so hard.

But most of all, San Diego, you stay classy.

Crap
It must have been after 8 a.m. or so.  I hate work as it always gets in the way of slacking off and making fun of other people.

Was about 20 after 6
I can't believe they weren't playing it all day.

I haven't seen it
And they don't podcast the whole show.  It's lost forever.
