LEAK! new logo leaked

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b394/vinsanity59/AD2007.jpg

Hard to see, a guy from boards.ign.com has found a leak to the new Arizona Diamondbacks logo. It looks worse than before. I mean they should have stucked with the old text and the old snake head. Ugh! THe DB is alright, but the colors should have been replaced more elsewhere.

Let me rephrase that
Since its hard to see the purple heart era of the D-Backs go like that with the departures of Gonzo and Counsell, and possibly Batista. And with that the purple, copper, and teal will be thrown out for new colors and unis. Now, the red and black scheme should have used more sand in the jerseys or logos. Its hard to call it an upgrade because of calling the Diamondbacks the "D-Backs" on their jerseys. Now, the DB is a plus from the snake biting the baseball logo. People say it looks like a heart, so literally, they will wear their heart on their sleeves. The snake head logo looks a bit add, but I guess it does look realistic than the other one, but its hard to call it our road logo. I thought that they were going to use their text A from the logo, but they scrapped a the old wonderful text for a new one which seems to be incomplete at the moment.

It's a plus for a new turn for the franchise, but its hard to let go of something so grand from the first year, to 100 game win, to the championship team, and then to the purple heart era. But then again, change will be always there.

eh
That DB logo is pretty sweet, but I'm just not digging these colors.

by nihil67 on Sep 21, 2006 4:35 PM EDT reply actions

Hmm
I don't like the "D" logo at all. This isn't Major League Disney, Matt Williams and Co. Maybe if I saw a more detailed design of it. Until then...

Go with Diamondbacks instead of "D-Backs" too.

Other than that, we have a winner. Literally wearing their heart on theis sleeve. Good call.

by Otacon on Sep 21, 2006 5:40 PM EDT reply actions

I wonder
I wonder if the pinstripes will be gone?  I'm guessing yes since we'll look just like the Reds.

by nihil67 on Sep 21, 2006 5:46 PM EDT reply actions

I think they are gone...
The Reds' new scheme has been leaked as well. They said they were dropping black, yet they have a black script.

I'd hope so
And now that I look more at the "DB" logo, it looks more like a snake head rather than a heart. Either way, it's great.

Its beginning to grow on me
Really. I'm beginning to love the DB, but the D seems... off. The A, it's always been there.

Pleasantly surprised
I expected a disaster, I confess.  I don't like "D-Backs" on the jerseys, but I kinda like the rest of it.  Not crazy about the D logo, but it's not terrible.  And I really like the new sleeve logo.

Seconded
I was going to post, but that's pretty much how I feel about it, too.

Yeah, generally in agreement
The db logo is cool, but I'm really not happy with the abbreviation. I know I used "D-backs" here all, the time, but that's a far more informal setting. Unless, of course, it's part of a trend, and San Francisco now have 'Gits' on their shirts. In which case, I'm all for it. :-)

Well, if that's the trend..

"Gits!"  Geez, I laughed so hard when I read that, I spilled my soda!  Thanks a lot, Jim!

The color change is no big deal, although I liked the old one.  Oh, well.  I like the "db" snakehead a lot!  The "Dbacks"...  BOOOO!!!!  We may call 'em that for short; but that doesn't make it right on the uniform...  <grrr...>

by EvilJuan on Sep 21, 2006 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Won't find much argument here.
Like the way the A logo looks, although whoever said more sand could've been used was spot on.  And the db logo is pretty sweet, whether it's more like a snake or a heart.  Solid word there.

The new lettering is okay, at least distinctive.  Not a huge fan of the red overload though.

Pimping!
I'm hella excited ... being a young white male in Arizona, i'm the perfect expert to explain how this move in logo and color scheme will increase sales and give the d-backs a push for the younger crowd in Arizona.

The colors aren't frumpy.

Purple, Teal, Tourquoise ... these are old lady colors.  When you think Tourquoise (and forgive my spelling, but i'm not a spell checker, and I think we all get the point ... ), you think gawdy dressed old ladies who's idea of the Southwest is a bucking bronco gold lame cutout on a black shirt and bulky rings that engulf the hand in desert minerls.  Purple?  The red hat ladies.  This old group of ladies who get together for ... I don't know what.  Teal, not really a bad thing ... if you call it orange.  But you don't refer to a color other then by it's base name as a young man.  Your buddy can wear a pink shirt, but the minute he calls it salmon?  He's not your buddy anymore.

Now, the four primary base colors of the hats (white, grey, black and red) all appeal to young men who are more fashion concious then necessarly team biased.  This is not a bad thing, the more money they make selling the hats, the more notice the team gets, possibly on a national sale.  You know ESPN reports on that stupid statistic such as jersey or team hat sold.

Also, the DB/Heart/Snake Head logo is very cutting edge and slighly reminisent of of the kind of marketing associated with 'extreme' sports, your DC Shoe's and Birdhouse'es, and I see this becoming a top selling hat if they make it avaliable as such.  I sure as hell want a red, black, and white one.  And I wouldn't feel like a fashion victim wearing it out and about, like I do the purple.  My default baseball hat of choice is my Boston hat for that reason, it don't look bad.

With the valley sports scene currently being dominated by Edgerian James, Matt 'Who's Your Daddy?' Leinert, Amare and Marion, this will really make waves for cutting into the best kind of local advertising: the kind YOU pay the club to do for them.

That may be true
but wear the new, unoriginal colors anywhere but AZ and you'll have to mind the snickers from the fans that see your colors and think "how lame, what a rip off of (insert any of 15 teams here)"

Funny thing, I don't remember seeing all that much "teal" that everyone is talking about, but why not just a simple grey and black with some purple to keep it original. The colors are then not "old lady colors" but then they are also not "every other teams colors." I love the black unis, and they were truly the class of the NL West IMHO.

Carpenter's a great pitcher, but then again, so would Webb against semi-pro teams.

Personally I never really liked the purple.  Maybe it's just me.  It seems OK for football and basketball but not for baseball.  I really don't like the "d-backs" logo but I like the log on the sleeves.  When do the hats go on sale?

So on an unrelated note...
I would assume this means the colors of the Snakepit are changing as well?  It seems like you could make pretty decent use of those three colors (AKA red sparingly) to match the new logo.
In my nightmares, I see Brian Bruney...make it stop...

by Azreous on Sep 26, 2006 2:56 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I imagine so...
I'll have to mention it to the powers-that-be, since I don't have the artistic ability to make the changes. Well, I could try, but the results would like resemble a sickly-looking reptile, as rendered by Andy Warhol during a bad acid trip. If we're lucky. :-) Still, that's why we have minions...okay, I don't have them myself, but Blez of Athletics Nation presumably does! Which colour do you think should replace the copper that's the main background color in the sidebars?

by Jim McLennan on Sep 26, 2006 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

It could just be this work computer, but...
The only copper I see is in the background of the SP logo in the top left.  The side bar on the right side is a teal background, with purple-colored header bars and white text (yellow in parts of D'backs Watch).  And personally, it seems like that sand color might work well as a secondary one; much better than an overdose of red, at least.

Just my take.  We print a mostly black-and-white newspaper, so what do I know about color schemes. lol

In my nightmares, I see Brian Bruney...make it stop...

by Azreous on Sep 26, 2006 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah, is that teal?
I always assumed it was supposed to be patina'd copper. But a quick Google reveals you to be right. This is why I am not allowed to take charge of anything involving home decor. :-) Whatever it is, will likely be gone, regardless. Yeah, I imagine sand would be a little less harsh on the eye as a main colour scheme than red, but we'll see. Maybe I should pitch Pimp My Site to MTV as a new series!

by Jim McLennan on Sep 26, 2006 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

The alternatives aren't great, I suppose.
Black is a great color for things like that, but it doesn't provide much team identity; just about every team in the majors uses black in their uniforms somehow.  If I've got time when I get home, I'll see if I can't play around with a couple things.

But I think you've had enough MTV exposure lately...maybe something on Spike or ESPN would be more apropos.

Nice work...
Doesn't look too bad at all. The only problem I'd see is, as VIII mentioned, it's perhaps a bit too close to the Padres scheme. See GasLamp Ball, for example. Now I don't mind the Padres - it's not as if we're sharing a colour scheme with Roidman - but they are still our divisional rivals... :-)

by Jim McLennan on Sep 27, 2006 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I noticed the similarities.
It's not too bad looking, although a little unusual to see so much sand when it's sparsely used in the new logos.  But the red looks disastrous if you flip it around with the sand, that much is for sure.

The color seems different enough from the Padres, although it is in the same ballpark.  Dunno what to suggest there.

Similarity to another NL team
Is it just me, or do the colors look a little similar to the Houston Astros colors? Just asking.....

by ipafn on Sep 26, 2006 3:56 PM EDT reply actions

The mainstream media finally catches up
Internet leak gives early peek at new logo. Only took five days after VIII's original post for them to notice! :-) However, it does seem to imply the info there is accurate, since new prez Derrick Hall said it was a "bummer" it was leaked. I know it wasn't the D'backs fault they couldn't discuss it - believe MLB rules prevent it from being done before the end of the World Series - but I can't really see the purpose of that rule, especially since that clearly doesn't apply internally.

Interestingly...
There's been a surge of visitors since the above story was published, suggesting a lot of people still rely on "old media" for their information. Mind you, it probably helps that this story is #1 on Google when you search for "new arizona diamondbacks logo". Almost five times the normal visitors yesterday, the most since the 2006 draft, and today is already the second-highest of the month and we're not even at noon.

To all such visitors, welcome: and stick around, because who knows what else you might learn! :-)

Sleeve Logo on Fitted!
This is likely a style cap, like the Arizona "A" pinstripe hat I have. So yeah, I think that it looks good, but like I said, MLB is retiring the 5950 New Era Fitted Caps and may be partnering with some other hat company. So here you go:

Source: http://boards.sportslogos.net/index.php?showtopic=41883

IMO the colors look horrible. But The logo itself looks like it was executed fine. I would buy something like that, but I wish that was the BP logo, which I think it is because the current sleeve logo is the snake biting the baseball, which is the ST and BP logo. I would love that logo to be Sedona red with a black traceline. With a Sedona/Black cap.

disappointed
Hello.  I'm a First time reader and poster...  My name is Jonathan and I'm a 25 year old Arizona native.

I saw a set of these new logos a few weeks ago and I was not, and am still not, happy with what I saw. Of what they're doing, it feels like what they're trying to accomplish is too "modern" if you follow me. It feels like they're trying to make diamondbacks baseball "hip" and "cool". (If it were 1993 I'm sure they'd have the players in hyper colors.) What I saw doesn't feel timeless or "majestic" and I think that should be the goal of defining the identity for your baseball franchise.

What they've done ends up looking immature/childish and it comes off as second best to a AA league or high school ball. (Heck, I know a few high school sports identities I respect more then the leaked designs I saw.) Baseball is a prideful, classic sport and I'm not sure that's what they're trying to represent here.

The db logo is incredibly phallic. I couldn't agree more that there's far too much use of black as a contrasting color and more use of the Sand shade would have given everything a much more noble look.

Bottom line:  they can do better by their players and their fans, and it takes no resources away from scouting, player development, facilities managment, or front office duties to do so. As a young organization trying to broaden their fan base I think they're settling for second best.

On a personal note, it's disappointing.  I've been trying to become a full blown diamondbacks fan since '99 and I just can't do it when they make decisions like this...

Jonathan.

Official unveiling is November 8th
At the Valley Ho. "The Arizona Diamondbacks will shed their skin, so to speak, to reveal the team's new uniforms and logo featuring their new colors -- Sedona Red and Sonoran Sand -- during an invitation-only celebrity fashion show. For one night only, selected members from the D-backs roster will trade in their gloves and baseball caps to model the never-before-seen team attire."
