Gameday Thread, #75: 6/24 vs Angels

Bartolo Colon, RHP (0-3, 5.57)
Claudio Vargas, RHP (6-4, 5.02)

Here we go again. Perhaps if we all close our eyes until we get past the first inning, and pretend it doesn't happen, we just might stand a chance. Not that Colon has exactly been a force to be reckoned with thus far, but he's only made four starts. Last time wasn't bad - nine hits and a walk over seven innings, with two earned runs.

Vargas was the last starter to pitch in a win - not that he got the win, of course. However, two runs in six innings against Pittsburgh was good enough to keep us in the game. So hopefully, he'll be able to do the same again, and we can build on last night's hit-parade, by actually driving in some runs today. Though "hope" is basically all we've got to cling onto, rather than, say, "realistic expectations of victory".

Today's lineup
  1. C. Counsell ss .282
  2. J. DaVanon rf .281
  3. L. Gonzalez lf .264
  4. C. Jackson 1b .268
  5. C. Tracy 3b .274
  6. E. Byrnes cf .291
  7. J. Estrada c .308
  8. O. Hudson 2b .257
  9. C. Vargas p .130
Interesting. No Shawn Green, even though there's a RHP on the mound. Maybe there's something in his history against Colon? Ah, there you go: Green is batting .207, DaVanon .500. In, er, two at-bats. But Byrnes is 9-for-23, so I guess they wanted both him and DaVanon in the lineup.

What's that? :-) Actually, he had one last time in Pittsburgh: left with a 4-2 lead after six innings. Season high is 107 pitches - he's at 88 through 5 2/3. Due up fourth in the bottom of the inning, so if anyone gets on, could be a pinch-hitter.

Melvin's career

Excellent defensively, Melvin struggled at the plate, batting just .233 over his ten major league seasons. In 1987 he threw out 40% of the opposition's would-be basestealers (second-best in the NL) as the Giants' part-time catcher, nailing Tim Raines and Vince Coleman twice each. He also hit a career-high 11 home runs that year, but batted just .199.

After three seasons of splitting time with Mickey Tettleton (1989-90) and Chris Hoiles (1991) behind the plate for the Baltimore Orioles, Melvin was traded to Kansas City for Storm Davis. He batted a career-high .314 in 1992 but played in only 32 games, never again seeing regular action in his three remaining seasons. (SCL/AF)
