Chris Carter

Dbacks 1B not Vikings Receiver

Star-divide

Anyone out there seen 1B Chris Carter and can give firsthand account? He has three homers in the spring, and I'm wondering if there's word on his future as trade bait or development.
All I know he was drafted 17th round out of Stanford in 2004, plus he's a 1B which means he has no future with this organization.
The team site quotes Melvin saying that he has a "way to go" defensively -- has he missed the pitcher throwing back to the mound after the out yet? Any info on where this person is going in the organization, or what he looks like on the field from people who've been there (Otacon?) would be welcome

i've never seen him
But, I can gather by random internet searching that he's got a left handed power bat that would bring interest in the trade market.  It would definitely seem that he fits into the AL system much better... perhaps a guy to flip for a pitcher in the (near?) future.

He pounded in AA... probably see him land in Tucson this year if he continues on the path he's on in spring so far.

Bit in the Banana today on him
Carter's power turning heads. It says he doesn't have a chance to crack the 25-man roster, with Jackson and Clark "well ahead of him", but Melvin says, "He's been a guy that's put up some pretty impressive numbers. Defensively, he's got a way to go, but when we added him...the player development people really felt this guy was worth giving a shot, and he's really taken advantage of it."

From John Sickels
"Nicholas and Carter have booming bats but positional questions."

Definitely trade bait, especially if he rakes in Tucson. Having his bat as a back-up wouldn't be bad either.

Speaking of first baseman and defense, from the 15 or so odd games I've seen of Jackson up close, he hasn't looked that bad. In fact, he has looked fine. Just wanted to get that out.

Carter
I've read people describing him as having a lead glove.  With Jackson and Clark in front of him, getting traded to an AL team might be the best for his future.
BA's take (http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/minors/050908pulse.html)
My worry is he ends up like Jack Cust.

Though it's probably cool to share the same name as the X-Files creator and almost the same name as a HOF Wide Receiver :)

As well as...

...as I discovered when News.Googling him today to find the Banana link, it's also the name of New Zealand's Conservation Minister. :-)

Power bat
BA rated him the best power hitter in the organization.  He probably has the best chance among all the current prospects to beat Richie Sexson's blast off the Jumbotron if he plays in Chase Field :)

Chris Carter post aboe
Somehow the above post was accepted under Anonymous Hero's name instead of mine. Don't know how it happened but wanted to clarify it.

Sounds like another Erubiel
Appreciate the input, whozurmomma. It would appear - on the basis of the opening series, anyway! - that first base is currently occupied for the Diamondbacks until at least 2011. :-) I must admit that I am already expecting Carter to be traded: let's just hope we get more than Elmer Dessens for him this time.

Though I note Durazo isn't with a team at all now: a striking fall, for someone who batted .321 with 22 homeruns as recently as 2004. Maybe he's still coming back from his surgery?
