How about talking with the Phillies

The Phillies just acquired Freddy Garcia which gives them 6 starting pitchers.  Garcia, Brett Myers, Cole Hamels, Jon Lieber, Jamie Moyer and Adam Eaton.  Personally I would not mind having any of these guys other than Moyer because he has been pitching since Ty Cobb retired.  I can't see any of these guys going to the bullpen so something has to give.  Just a thought.  I think we need another pitcher in order to compete with the Dodgers who seem to be signing everyone including Jason Schmidt.  I don't feel comfortable with anyone past Webb, Livan and Davis.  It doesn't look like Mulder is going to work out.  Any thoughts?

Sure/Why?
What do we offer them?  They aren't going to let Hamels or Myers go for anything less then an uber-prospect (or two).  Lieber, the most likely candidate to be traded, is due $7.5 mil this year.  The Brewers have supposedly offered Turnbow and Damian Miller for him.  We can't match that and we wouldn't want to.  He's not very good.

Dodgers also overstocked...
Brad Penny looks likely to be the odd man out there, as noted in the main story. I would like to see us add another starter: it doesn't have to be an ace, since I think Brandon Webb and four league-average starters could be good enough to win the NL West.

Mind you, Turnbow and Miller doesn't exactly sound like an overpowering offer from the Brewers. Julio and Eric Byrnes would seem an even better one, for example. Eric hit more homers than the Phillies' regular CF and RF combined in 2006... The sole thing keeping the OPS afloat there was Abreu's plate-discipline before they traded him to the Yankees. Only fifteen homers, but 124 walks, most in the majors.

Overpowering? No, but...
why would you offer Byrnes and Julio for Lieber?

Probably not...
But that was more in answer to, "We can't match that." We certainly can, and that's without even dipping into the prospect pool. But I'm thinking Pittsburgh could be potential trading contenders too for that last starter...
