Well, December was pretty good...
- December 10, 1998 - Randy Johnson signed as a free agent.
- December 16, 1998 - Purchased Erubiel Durazo from Monterrey (Mexican).
- December 18, 1998 - Steve Finley signed as a free agent.
- December 28, 1998 - Traded Karim Garcia to Detroit Tigers in exchange for Luis Gonzalez.
Outside of that month - which largely created the core of the 2001 World Series team - the one that stands out is:
October 7, 1998 - Lost Cory Lidle to Tampa Bay Devil Rays on waivers.
He's never exactly been Cy Young material, but he has been a serviceable starter. Mind you, since we dropped him, he's played for Tampa, Oakland, Toronto and Cincinnati, before his current stint with Philadelphia.

Makes you wonder. . .
And maybe Mike Rizzo's drafting isn't that great. After all, whoever was doing the drafting in 98 picked up Robby Hammock in the 23rd round. They didn't know his knees would give out after a season and a half of catching.
Poor Robby Hammock, sitting on a park bench somewhere clutching that Rolex Randy Johnson gave him for catching a perfect game, telling the little boy next to him, "You know, I used to be a baseball player."

How did this team win 65 games?
When I harken back to that cloudy start of this accelerated franchise, how did we win 65 games?
I know we didn't have much in the way of pitching. We did our fair share of hitting and scoring runs. How was it that this team was able to not exceed the 100 loss threshold?
Anyway, most of the has beens and throwbacks have since departed to the inaugural season ballpark bone yard. Some have been reluctant and uncooperative in crossing over to the abyss i.e. Robby Hammock, Mike Koplove, Javier Lopez, Kelly Stinnett, and Vincent Padilla. Time and circumstances will eventually tell the story.
Much like your tale of Robbie sitting in a park on a bench, muttering that he, caught Randy Johnson's perfect game!
