Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

I just realized

The Diamondbacks are 5 games over .500. So much for my overreaction Tuesday night, while in the process of bashing the D'backs offense, Glaus promtly rockets one out. I think I'm focusing too much on pythagorean records, what baseball prospectus says, and what writers(in particular Dayn Perry from foxsports.com) write. What I'm trying to say is, yeah, the Diamondbacks are probably overacheiving. But I bet we all agree, overacheiving is better than acheiving nothing at all.

Differential schmifferential!
Personally, even speaking as a stat-head, I like to see us defying statistical reason - especially while it makes Dayn Perry look like an idiot. :-) But the day they can crunch the numbers and accurately predict future performance, is the day baseball dies.

Have we over-achieved? Probably. But that's in the past; what we need to do now is ride our good luck, and start playing like we mean it. And what better occasion than a four-game series at Coors Field to waken our slumbering lumber?

Like they say...
It's better to be lucky than to be good. After all those games where Johnson or Schilling would pitch a gem only to get no run support and lose, I think the D'Backs deserve some good luck for a change.

Weekly Rankings
The problem with weekly rankings is what criteria do you use to rank the teams? If it's by the win-loss record, we can just look at the standings. Is it the W-L for that week, i.e. the team that is playing best at the moment? In that case if the worst team goes on a 7-0 run, do we rank them at the top?
No matter what formula you use to predict/justify the rankings, there will be some disgruntled homey fans, me included ;), who will be unhappy with it.

Power Rankings
I think the focus of any ranking system should be straight W/L record, because after all, that's what actually counts. Perhaps use W-L for the last month, but figure in strength of schedule too...

But as William says, you could come up with a stat that "proves" any team is superior to any other team. Baseball is the most number oriented game around, which may not always be helpful!
