Manny in (purple) pinstripes?

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2199067

"If Ramirez does request to be traded, Genske says "his preference would be Anaheim. He also still loves Cleveland, and would go back there." Another possibility would be Arizona, if Boston would take some of the contracts the Diamondbacks are trying to move, including Troy Glaus and Luis Gonzalez. Texas was in play at the deadline."

He's an overpaid, no glove, egotistical jackass...who just happens to hit .292/.388/.594/45HR. So of course I would love to have him. It's not happening but it's a good storyline for these slow times.

Hmmmm...
I suspect Ramirez' best days may be behind him, and his salary - nudging $20m a year in 2007 and 2008 - doesn't quite reflect the risk. For 2006, I'd do the trade, but beyond that... I fear we'd be trading one overpaid outfielder with declining skills and no arm left, for another one.

Ah, I love anonymous posters...
[He's certainly better then any other D-back in history.]

When Ramirez hits 57 homers while batting .325 (as Gonzo did in 2001), then we'll talk. Not that Ramirez isn't good - he's probably a HOF lock, and deservedly so - just that the best is past for him. Here's his OPS over the previous six years:

  1. 1.154
  2. 1.014
  3. 1.097
  4. 1.014
  5. 1.010
  6. 0.982 - his worst since 1998.
Tony Clark had a better OPS than Ramirez this year. For someone earning $22m (compared to Clark's 750K), that's not good.

not only anonymous
but he's a HERO.

Why did Manny lead the league in assists? Because his arm is so bad that everyone runs on him! Even if we wanted him, I don't see Gonzo accepting a move to Boston. The Dbacks "trying to move" Gonzo's contract is just sort of pointless, unless they sense from him a willingness to move that he hasn't shown publicly.

I side with Jim's first comment. Before replacing like with like, get some pitching. Contact Scott Rolen's doctor and make him give a very pessimistic assessment so that STL thinks it can let some pitching go for a power-hitting 3B.
